Why do people make these comments? I have been around long enough to know that the president can't just suddenly decide he wants this group of peoples' taxes raised or that group of peoples' phones tapped. Oh, my bad, that has already happened. ;)

Seriously though, 99% of what these candidates want to happen in their administration will depend on getting bills passed and that takes cooperation from Congress. :confused3 We have a series if checks and balances for a reason. As for the raising of taxes, remember many members of Congress are wealthy or nearly so and it will take a lot for them to raise their own taxes as well.

Which candidate has a record of working across the aisle and will be more likely to see cooperation from the Congress??

That's why a lot of people will split the ticket when they vote. The democrats have the majority in both the house and the senate. Obama will be able to push through whatever her wants.......IF he's elected.

Given the way McCain has been leaning recently (i.e., by choosing a VP candidate who is against personal freedom), if you are going to split your vote this year, you're better-off voting Democratic for President, and Republican for Congress.

I must confess that's one of the reasons I would use to vote for McCain (still undecided). The fact that the Senate Majority leader and House Speaker are very liberal with a very liberal President, a lot of his legislation would make it through both houses (depending on how many seats, if any, the Dems pick up in the Senate).

I can certainly understand being concerned about having both the president and the congress being of the same party but then I wonder. It seems a lot of time is taken up with the partisian fighting. Would it be so bad if things did move through quickly?

What do you think is really going to be instituted that is so frightening? Are we afraid of massive increases in taxes? Are we afraid of free abortion clinics on every corner? What? What could be so bad?

Remember how gung ho Clinton was to get a health care reform instituted his first term? That never happened and we are still battling about it.

Personally I will vote whom I like no matter what their party is.

Well, how about then if McCain is elected and conservatives take control of both Houses? Would you so willing to see things move quickly if that happened?
Actually, as I mentioned on a different thread, looking back on the period 1996-2000, I came to the conclusion that a Dem as President and Rep in control of Congress was the best solution.
I doubt we would see massive tax increases or anti-abortion clinics on every street corner.
I can see increased government control of people's lives though as some liberals seem to think people aren't wise enough to run their own lives; more business regulation (no, I'm not advocating the free-wheeling days of the last few years altho I find it interesting that the so-called liberals in Congress like Dodd, Barney Frank and Chuck Schumer did nothing to stop Fannie Mae's excesses even though they were warned back in 1999).

(However, after seeing what the administration and Congress have done in the last week, I guess it doesn't make any difference. The feds now control the two biggest morgage financiers in the country, the largest insurance company and now with the "bad debt" buyout, hold the 'paper' on quite a few structures.)
