Per McCain's campaign rep Carly Fiorina:

"Let me give you a real, live example, which I've been hearing a lot about from women. There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth control medication. Those women would like a choice," she said.

But as the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America was happy to point out, McCain twice voted against measures that would have required insurance companies to cover birth control -- in 2003 and 2005.

The Republican said Wednesday that he did not recall those votes. "It's something that I had not thought much about," he added.

He doesn't recall?

Is this guy outta touch or what? :confused3

Given his flip-flopping of late, "I can't recall" is probably a close to a consistent stand as we can expect.

He sez he doesn't want to talk about that issue then admits he hasn't given womens' health issues much thought.

Well, there you have it.

Perhpas he's focusing his campaign on another segment of the population.

And it's not something he thinks much about. You know, not being that important of an issue and all.

Can someone please explain to me why it is any of the governments business what private insurance companies offer and what they don’t? :confused3

The problem with this story is what happened BEFORE this. A lady who is being considered for VP LIED about his voting record on this issue. If all you watch and hear is republican radio - you don't know that she LIED about his record. And yes, McCain is supposed to be trying to win the Clinton supporters that aren't happy with Obama - so yes it is an important issue for his campaign. I just hope the truth comes out everywhere. Actually I hope the American public does good reaseach.

because there are laws regarding illegel discrimination and withholding payment for medical care is discrimination.

His response was painful to watch.

I do not think that not covering birth control is discrimination. It seems to me it falls in the same category as elective plastic surgeries which I have never heard of an insurance company covering.

Because if they are going to legislate my right to an abortion they sure can make sure my insurance company pays for my BC.

If they don't have any buisness in my BC through a private agency then they don't have any buisness in my choice to have an abortion at a private agency.

Discrimination? You have got to be kidding me.

Also, I am not arguing the merits of the case here, but your arguement, not paying for BC is not "withholding payment" for anything, that means payment was due, payment was not due on something that was not covered.

If they don't have any buisness in my BC through a private agency then they don't have any buisness in my choice to have an abortion at a private agency.
Agree with you 100% here.

McCain was asked a question, his response was that he didn't want to discuss it, then he said he couldn't recall his voting record and he hasn't given it much thought.

Doesn't he have any ideas about womens' health isues?

I mean, all of you have expressed more about this issue than he did.

And Viagra isn't elective?

That's the problem. You didn't hear a lot of complaining about BC not being covered before Viagra came on the market and insurance companies had no problem paying for it.

The double standard is what's discriminatory. Men "need" to be able to have sex, but women don't (without fear of an unwanted pregnancy).
