McCain will participate in debate, campaign says
Story Highlights
NEW: Sen. John McCain will attend Friday night debate

John McCain had said he will not attend unless Congress passes bailout bill

Barack Obama planned all along to show up for the debate after Washington talks

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain will attend the first presidential debate, scheduled for Friday night, his campaign announced.

McCain said earlier this week he would not attend the debate if an agreement had not been reached on a $700 billion bailout plan for Wall Street.

The campaign said the Republican presidential nominee believed that enough progress had been made for him to travel to Mississippi to participate in the debate, set for 9 p.m. ET at the University of Mississippi campus.

"He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Rep. [Roy] Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans," the campaign said in a statement.

"The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon."

Both presidential candidates -- McCain and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama -- returned to Washington Thursday to participate in talks over the bailout package.

The debate was expected to focus on foreign policy and national security, but the economic crisis is likely to be a dominant issue as well.

Debate planners got a big surprise when McCain called for postponing it. The university has invested millions of dollars preparing for it. Watch more on the fate of the debate »

Obama's campaign had argued over the past couple of days that both attending the presidential debate and working on the bailout plan can be accomplished and the event should go on.

"I think we can do both of these things at the same time. The next president is going to face multiple crises on the same day," Robert Gibbs, Obama's top adviser, said on CNN's "American Morning."

"We've got a presidential debate scheduled. We've got a stage. We'll have an audience. My guess is we'll have a moderator and at least one of the presidential candidates," Gibbs said

Was there any doubt? I mean, really? There's no way he would've stayed out of the debate!

yeah seriously. You really think he'd let BO there all by himself :confused3

He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. You dems would have been all over him either way.

GO McCain - lets see you win tonight!!!

I think he looks stupid either way. It was such a dumb stunt he pulled.

oh some stunt - lets see should I actually be a Senator or just pretend to be one:confused3

I agree. It was going to be spun in the negative no matter what he did. Besides, if he didn't show up we'd have Mr O doing the classic bully on the playground act "That's right! He's afraid to fight me! Sissy!"

Gotta love Bill Clinton's reaction to that suggestion. :thumbsup2

After this week we all see who would be the better leader....hint it's not the one who acted overdramatic when he announced he was placing country first and then flip flopped when he realized no one was buying it:rotfl:

McCain went off the handle while Obama remained calm....this was a bad week for McCain....don't even get me going about Palin, not a big help to her running mate was she??????:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Totally agree with above posts. And, Obama probably tinkled a little in his pants now that the debate is back on.

He brought the damning on himself by bad, bad, bad judgement. He's got no idea how to prioritize important things yet people WANT him to be POTUS?!
I think his job as a Senator is taxing enough. Clearly he hasn't the ability to make good decisions without public pressure. Even W can do THAT!

But wait, didn't McCain say he was suspending the campaign due to the economic crisis? Is the crisis over? Or has McCain decided to put winning first? Or was he lying to us about his motivations the whole time?

Remember when McCain was pulling his playground bully act just a couple of weeks ago....saying how his campaign would not have to be so negative if Obama had only done what McCain wanted in attending those town hall meetings he wanted....it was like he was saying "I had to beat you up since you wouldn't give me your lunch money!!!!:headache: "

McCain proved he is the playground bully type, while all you have to go on is an assumption...cause the debate is on!!!!!:happytv:

The debate was never off. Obama saw to that.:thumbsup2 McCain tried to run but Obama had to grab him by his belt and drag him back into the ring. Ding, ding ding ding....let the games begin!!! BTW, the only old lady in this race is Johnny Mac. Hope he's wearing his Depends tonight.

And what exactly has he done to show he is a powerful Senator? Is there a deal on the table? Is everyone saying, "Wow, we couldn't have done it without McCain!"?

He backed himself into a corner with a cheap stunt that backfired.

McCain didn't cave.

He did his primary job, and now is ready to work on his new job. It is that simple.

It is a shame Obama lost his prep time by having to do his job too. ;)

This should be a great debate.

Scoreboard McCain!

Obama gets the credit --- geez -- how many coins do you have? Oh - as for tonight -- well - I hope Obama does better than he did against Hillary :rotfl: :rotfl: "Yeah - what she said?" :rotfl: :rotfl:

McCain is expected to return to Washington after the debate to continue his work on the bailout crisis.
