Hi Everyone! I'm Jamie. Welcome to my trip report

I suppose I'll start by introducing those who went on the trip and all what you'll need to know.

My boyfriend and I are from New Jersey. We're aspiring teachers in a tough job market. We stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter from May 19 to May 25, 2011. Our trip was to celebrate the end of the spring semester and my college graduation.

BF and me after my graduation

Researching and planning kept me sane through my last semester which entailed student teaching and a linear algebra class. So when graduation finally came, it was like a huge ball of glee all rolled into one with the trip beginning early the morning after.

Umm what else... this was my second full trip to WDW and first with the dining plan. I was very excited to get all my ADR's and plan out where we'd go but just as I thought, dining reservations aren't all they're cracked up to be. But we'll get to that in a bit...

Our flight from Newark airport was at 6:29am on Thursday, May 19th, so we had to get everything the night before. I made sure everything but last minute essentials was packed (glasses, deodorant, etc.) We decided what bag should be checked and packed my pink carry-on only a quarter of the way full to accommodate for souvenirs, etc. I laid out Mickey tie-dye shirts, checked in to airline, paid baggage fee and got to bed 9:30pm for our early alarm.

Thursday, May 19, 2011
We woke up at 2:30am and got dressed (in our Mickey tie-dye shirts!). We got everything packed and ready for the flight and sat down to wait for limo to pick us up. BF's parents were awake to say goodbye but were not interested in driving us after last year’s fiasco (his mom got us lost driving to the airport which made us late for our flight and we sat in the airport until late afternoon on standby).

3:45am… no car. BF calls the limo driver... he sounds like the phone call woke him up. Driver says he'll be here in 10 minutes.

4:00am... no car. "You’re in Lodi or Fair Lawn?" "…Neither." Great, he’s headed the opposite direction.

4:20am – limo driver wanders down the street. We blink the porch light. He backs onto the lawn (he “missed” the driveway) Oh boy…

Security last time was a nightmare even at this hour, are we going to miss our flight again?

Oooh am I first? We missed our flight this trip. NOT fun! :) Looking forward to reading more. We were there on overlapping dates (our trip was 5/21-5/29).

Hey there, I'm joining in. :) It sounds like you're in Bergen County, so am I! Woooo New Jersey! haha

Hi Jamie! Hope you had a blast! Can't wait to read on.

Have you seen the DISMeet posting in NJ in July? http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2710409

Oooh I finally got back to read.... that does not sound like a driver that will get a recommendation. I hope it gets better. FAST

Hey...joining in! We will be staying at POFQ in August, so I am looking forward to seeing what you have to say about it.

I am a teacher as well (hence the August trip). Good luck finding a job!

You sure are! Ugh, last time they let us on the plane 3 times before we actually got a seat late in the afternoon. Well, at least you got there! I'm headed over to your TR right after this post.

Hey hey! I'm pretty sure you'll love it. Make sure you check out the POFQ discussion and pics threads. I just posted all my pictures there. I'm worried about future hot weather trips because of the teacher schedule! I'd love to hear how it goes for you on your trip. Thank you! I have my first interview on Thursday.

I'm here! :banana::banana::banana:

Let's get this party started! :woohoo: party:

Thanks for coming back! Woo! :cool1::yay:

High Jamie! Congratulations on graduating! We are staying at POFQ in August. I'm in.....

Hi Andrea! Thank you! I hope you have a great time at POFQ. I'll make sure to include a bit of my opinion on the place ;)

As you might remember where we left off, I was unsure we'd make it to the airport in time for our flight...

We fly down the highway and get there by 4:50am. I really did not want to tip the guy for forgetting us, being late and driving on the lawn. But BF already had the money precounted with tip so he just gave him the money and we walked away promising to never use the guy again. :sad2:

We wound up flying through security thus having tons of time to wander around to find breakfast and our gate. The flight was fine... I found out my flying anxiety is getting more manageable.

Getting through Orlando airport was easy and so was getting to the Magical Express bus. The bus had people from OKW, SSR, POFQ, and POR on it, but luckily we were the first stop.

I was so excited to see what POFQ looked like after researching it for months. It is so beautiful!! We walk in and go to the online check-in line. We were standing behind a couple who is taking forever with the only agent that was open there. Seeing a line building, another CM took us over to the concierge window to get checked in. She sees that we are flagged for a free upgrade to SSR because POFQ was over sold. :thumbsup2 Since we were a couple without children, we fit the “profile” that was easily upgradable. BF gave me the option of switching but since I had been waiting for quite a few months to finally experience POFQ, I decided we should stay put. I hadn’t researched SSR and we could have gotten a crappy room (far from the busses, everything). So we were assigned 4119, a king bed (which we had paid for) and a corner on the first floor. It was right next to a stairwell but rarely did we hear anyone going up and down it. It was within stone’s throw of the bus stops and would have had a parking lot view if not for the great landscaping and trees blocking. We were also very close to the food court which made it very easy to get drinks on our way back from the parks.

After squeeing over the awesomeness of the room, we put our things down and headed to the food court (to use a snack credit and buy refillable mugs) before heading to the parks. As per tradition, we headed to MK for our first day. I’m not that great about remembering tons of specifics for all the days so bare with me. I remember the photopass photographer on Main Street saying how much she loved our shirts.
pass2.jpg

We then fastpassed Space mountain before jumping in line for Buzz Lightyear. The standby wait time said 20 minutes. We wound up waiting for at least 45 because they kept letting fastpass people go in bunches. BF, who is a big video gamer, got his butt kicked by ME! Quite a triumph for me...
Disney2011024a.jpg

Afterwards we checked our Undercover Tourist lines apps to see about the wait times for Splash Mountain and Big Thunder. I had also read about how much people liked Columbia House for lunch so we walked by there to check out the menu. BF isn’t into chicken and seafood so we passed on that and decided Cosmic Rays would be a better choice for both of us. While wondering, we got to try Philharmagic which was a lot of fun to sing along with and really nicely cool being that is was 90 degrees outside.
Apparently the app was wrong because when we got over to Splash Mountain and BTTR the lines were more like 50 minutes each. So we hopped on the steam train and took a ride back to the front entrance. To waste time waiting for our fastpass time to come up for Space Mountain, we rode the people mover (which had a LINE!! WHAT?) then got some lunch. It was my first time using the DDP. I got chicken tenders with fries and chocolate cake. He got a burger with fries and chocolate cake. Both meals and desserts were better than we thought they’d be and a lot of food! Great... now it was time to ride Space Mountain while stuffed to the gills with food. It added a different "element" to the ride. Afterwards we waddled back out to our bus stop where we met a mother and daughter from Minnesota. It was a lot of fun talking about each others' stereotypical accents as well as confirming some of the "myths". The mother said "You betcha" like we always thought they did and we said "cawfee" and "dawg" like she thought. It made for a nice ride back to the resort.

When we got back around 3:00pm, we took a nap. Actually, before we did that, BF had some terrific news from home. He was accepted into the master’s of teaching program for the fall!

Could this day get any better?? "You betcha!" :lmao:

Enjoying ypur reort so far. We are staying at POFQ in Jan...can't wait. Congrats on your graduation and hope you get a job soon...what do you want to teach? There are many openings up here in VT

awesome trip report my fellow New Jersey-an.
I too am hale from Northern New Jersey and looking forward to your next update. :)

Sounds like a great start (So happy for you that you made it to the airport in time. I know all about the horrors of standby thanks to my solo trip where my flight was cancelled :scared1: ). Can't wait to read more!

The refurbished rooms at POFQ look so pretty!

How great to receive such awesome news during your trip, too :)

So funny that you said you're from Sussex County, I never meet anyone who is from there, but of course I would on the DIS. I grew up in Vernon.

Wow, I can't believe they offered you an upgrade to SSR! I've heard of room upgrades at the same resort, but not a different one. That's awesome.

It's our tradition to do MK first as well. Just wouldn't feel right if we didn't!

I can't believe the People Mover had a line, i've never seen that! Ah well, that's Summer at Disney for ya.

Great... now it was time to ride Space Mountain while stuffed to the gills with food. It added a different "element" to the ride.
:rotfl:

That's so funny about the accents thing, when I visited Minnesota and Wisconsin people kept asking me to say different words like quarter, water, coffee, etc & thought it was so funny that didn't call soda "pop".

What resort is SSR? Is it a moderate? Is it a DVC? Your shirts do look cool!

Saratoga Springs. It's a DVC and we found out later when on the boat to DTD, that the place is MASSIVE. We could have been placed anywhere!

I think you'll have a great time at POFQ! Thank you and I would like to teach middle school math but I am certified to teach K-5 grades and middle school science so I'll take anything at this point! :rotfl:

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear you know what I'm talking about!

I was so pleased to see how the new rooms turned out. I could barely contain myself!

I grew up in Vernon too! Yeah I guess they went with SSR since all of POFQ was sold out there wasn't anywhere to go upward there. When will we have that opportunity again? Oh well.. haha about the People Mover! So ridiculous it was picture worthy.

Omg don't get me started on "pop", "jimmies", or any of the other funny sounding synonyms!

Hiya everyone! I'm really sorry for not posting for a while. I've been all over the place and didn't have on hand the Word file I have been saving my trip report to.

When I last posted, BF and I had some terrific news about his acceptance to the teaching program. Woohoo! :worship: :dance3:

We had a 7:45pm reservation at Tony's Square Inn. We checked in early and requested a table on the porch. We didn't expect to wind up talking to a CM in the photo store next door for so long that we missed our reservation announcement. The hostesses were visibly annoyed that we did not show up for our call but put us back on the list and within 10 minutes our turn came again. We actually got our request for the porch but since the light parade was not until 9:00pm we tried to stretch out our dinner as long as possible. What we didn't expect was that even though we finished before the parade began, the waiter let us stay there to watch. Great seats!
Disney2011035a.jpg

Ok, so our view was partially blocked and a little far away to see the details but we had SEATS. As for the food, I had the chicken parmigiana and BF had the lasagna.
Disney2011036a.jpg
Disney2011037a.jpg

Both of us were less than thrilled with the flavor. Both dishes were bland. We had ice cream bombs for dessert which were pretty good.
Disney2011039a.jpg

That's when we promised that we would try to choose different desserts so that we could try more menu items. After the parade, we made our way toward the castle for Wishes. We eventually found a good spot to watch without being shoulder to shoulder with the crowd like we were last trip. The new projection show on the castle is phenomenal! Afterwards we wandered around the castle some as people were leaving and wound up over by the Minnie and Mickey topiaries. Here BF decided that we should get some pictures from the Disney PhotoPass photographer with the castle all lit up behind us. So we posed for the pictures and as I went to pick up our stuff to get out of the way for the family next in line, BF said "wait, one more picture."
pass6.jpg

Okay fine… he started digging around in the bag he had carried around all day. I started to ask him what he was doing when he wiggled out a grey ringbox..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
He got down on one knee and opened it, grinning ear to ear. I could barely hear him when he asked "Will you marry me?" I gawked at the ring in the box until he said "you're supposed to say yes." "YES!" I yell/squeaked.
25810250000a.jpg

Then we hugged and kissed and I made him put it on my finger rather than just give it to me like he was trying to do.
25810250001a-1.jpg

The photographer squeaked and "awww"'d at us. The people waiting to get their picture taken congratulated us. I had mentioned I would like to have pictures of when he asked so this was perfect! No crowds, no big display and we have pictures with beautiful scenery. It was 11:00pm at this point so we figured it was best to head back to the hotel. On the way, we stopped at City Hall which had been the plan to do anyway for my "I'm Celebrating" graduation pin but now we had another we'd like to get. The CM behind the desk was fantastic. We asked for the "Just Engaged" pins and she asked us when we got engaged, how he did it, etc. What was really magical was that she acted like we were the first people do it ever… as if 40 other couples didn’t get engaged in front of the castle earlier that same day. She wrote our names and the date on the pins, then gave us "Happily Ever After" pins with our names on them so that we could put our wedding date on them when it came time. I also got my graduation pin which was practically insignificant at this point.

Standing in line at the bus stop, we were both glowing and talking about the ring. A couple in front of us overheard our conversation and congratulated us.

The only thing left was to tell our parents…

OMG!!!!! That's such an awesome story!!! I am soo jealous, and I am in such awe! :cloud9:

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I'm so glad that you got pictures from the PP photographer! That's such an amazing story, and I confess, I got a little misty eyed. :cloud9::cloud9::cloud9:
