Maybe because it is late I am sitting here with the point charts trying to figure out the logic but why would someone who is going with 8 people book a 2 br when 2 studio's are less points? and the same thing with a grand villa 2 2brs would sleep more and give an extra bedroom out of the deal plus 2 mini kitches from the studios and an extra full kitchen compared to the grandvilla.

I am not asking why people want to stay in the grandvilla because obviously it is beautiful, I am asking who thought up this point system? It just doesn't make sense to me why the points are figured this way. Am I making sense? It seems like the get a little ridiculous when you add up what you can get. Like for example why would a 1 br be more points than 2 studios? I don't get it?

1br's have more space to offer plus a full kitchen with a nice living room type area. They also offer a larger master bedroom with a whirlpool tub. I can not imagine putting four adults in a studio. I like space. I figure I am on vacation and want to feel rested and relaxed. I certainly could not do that with four adults in a studio. If you have a 2br you have the master bedroom plus the studio that sleeps four (at OKW). Also the sofa sleeper. With 2br you would also have two baths. It all depends on how you rate comfort. If being crowded does not bother you than 2 studios would probably be fine. But like I said I just could not relax with four adults in a studio.

You mentioned adding up what you get, well that can certainly be looked at when comparing a 1br to a studio. If you have taken the tour for DVC then you should know how much nicer a 1br is. If you have not taken the tour then I can see why you are questioning the point system.

Yes I took the tour I just don't get how the points were figured. I think personally it should be more to book 2 studio's then the 1 br. I can totally see why you would want to stay in the larger accomodations and pay more points but it is just strange to me that 2 studios are less than 1 br. That is what I meant. Trust me I could not handle 4 agults in a studio either. AND I loved the bigger rooms when I toured. I guess I am just trying to figure out how the points system was allotted. I know not sensible it is late and I was just musing.

DVC obviously planned the points from a demand standpoint rather than a sleeping capacity standpoint. I rather doubt that actual unit size came into discussion early on. One can look at it like you did or one can think about the great deal they are getting for studio compared to a 1 or 2 BR unit as well as a 2 BR compared to a GV. At OKW, the GV is roughly 120% premium compared to a 2 BR plus studio where at BWV it's roughly 150% premium.

Obviously getting multiple smaller units is a better value and has other advantages. The only advantags I can think of for the GV is that all are in one unit along with the wow factor. Some could also say that having the people in different units is an advantage as well along with the extra space, extra kitchen ares and with OKW in years past, extra park tickets. Also remember one of the BR in the GV has 2 full beds instead of queens.

I do think the DVC studio is the best value on property.

Thanks Dean...:) That is a great explination of it. I too think the studio is an awesome value. I am not complaining at all since we plan to spend most our points on studio's. I too think that as far as people counting that the studio is an awesome value :) Thanks for your insight :)

For our trip next month at BCV I got 2 studios instead of a 2 bedroom. It cost me 28 points per night, compared to 40. A one bedroom is even 30 per night!
Compare 2 studios to a one bedroom. Yep, you don't get a kitchen, but you do get 2 full baths, plus more bed space. It makes no sense to me at all. And as my dad said we won't use the kitchen anyway. At best we will only eat breakfast and light snacks back in the rooms. Only thing you're missing out on is the washer and dryer. That stinks I must admit.

Now on the flip side, for next summer we want to try out VB. For me to get 2 studios in June it would be 24 points, but a 2 bedroom is only 29. Just 5 more points. So we're doing the 2 bedroom there instead. (FYI the one bedroom then is 22.) VB seems more correct in the rooms and point values to me.

LOL! We used to think that, too - until we took our first trip and stayed in a 2 bedroom. :teeth: Now I want to stay in at least a 1 bedroom (even if it's just the two of us) every time. DVC spoils you very quickly!

I'll be interested to see if you change your mind, too.

Best wishes -

DVC almost certainly uses a mathematical process called load balancing to determine what to charge for each size room. (It's common in the hotel industry.) As Dean suggested, it's based on demand rather than on features. In load balancing they would look at how many people are trying to book what kinds of rooms, where, and when, and they would crunch these numbers against the actual rooms they have in the system. The idea is to drive people toward making choices that even out the load on the resort, so that they have as few empty rooms as possible and as few low-occupancy weeks as possible.

We know for sure that this was done a few years after OKW opened, when DVC discovered that local residents were dropping in on weekends so often that weekend rooms started disappearing while weekday rooms sat empty. That's what led to the striking difference in points for weekends and weekdays.

Although DVC doesn't open these calculations to public scrutiny, it's extremely likely that they also factor in room sizes, leading to the points pattern that has surprised you. It was developed for their benefit, not yours, although it does help you by leveling demand and making it a little easier for you to book your own choices.

In the end, the pattern is there for you to read like tea leaves. If you study it you can spot good deals for yourself. You've already done that, so take advantage of what you've figured out and enjoy!

LOL! I was thinking the same thing! We've stayed twice in BWV Studio units and have our first 1BR booked for our next stay. I'm already certain there will be no going back!

hmmm interesting. Thanks for letting me know that. I was looking at some of the points charts last night and my mind was spinning. Hopefully soon I will be a pro LOL

Yeah I know but Dh is dead set against adding on. he seems to be freaking about the dues that come with more points so to stretch our points I think we will probably be only trying studios....I totally would convert since hey it is paid for sort of. MAybe we will take a year off (gasp) and we will have enough points to do the one br...we will see but of course you guys will be first to know :)

3DisneyNUTS, we have only done studios so far and have really been able to stretch our points that way. We would rather more Disney trips in a studio then less in a larger unit. We also switch to another WDW resort using some discount code or another for the higher Friday and Saturday night points.

I must admit we did stay at Pop Century this past trip and after staying even in the BWV studio it seemed way too small and put me off. Before, I would have gladly stayed at one of the values. We agreed it is now moderates from now on. Plus, my daughter is now spoiled by the slides, which the values don't have.

At some point, I'm sure we'll have to move up to a two bedroom cause we have two girls and I know they'll want their own space and bathroom. But for now we're all about streching...............

We have got so much for our tiny 200 points so far!
I would love to add on and have a ton of points like many on here, but I stay at home and WDW just isn't cheap. It is really our only splurge.

I really hope a lot of people think the studios are the best choice and fill them up leaving the one and two bedrooms for me. I have several reasons I can't stay in studios - we're spoiled. A couple years ago my family of four stayed in a hotel room (another timeshare presentation) for two nights before checking into our one bdrm at OKW and it drove us crazy. I get up earlier than the rest and there is no place to sit (in the dark) drinking my morning coffee while the rest sleep. With my OKW I have the living room or balcony to sit. When we return from the parks in the evening, or during the days we don't go to the parks, I hate sitting on the beds watching TV or waiting for the rest to get ready to go somewhere. Also nice to make lunch and sit at a table. Love to sit in the living room relaxing and thinking what a great life this is. In Oct we are taking another family of six with us and have a two bdrm and studio and I'm concerned the studio will not be close enough to the rest of us or who gets it. Wish I could get a grand villa.
