How were the people in Haiti getting water before the earthquake? I saw on some news report that they need to concentrate on taking water from the ocean and making it into drinking water. Weren't they doint that before?:confused3 The reason I ask is because they have electricity there so they obviously have some sort of power plant so they have the know how to do such a thing. Right???

I seriously doubt they have electricity at this point. You must remember that any infrastructure has been destroyed. And no...I don't think they were relying on a desalinization plant prior to this horrible event. I'm certain they had a public water system that relied on rain just like the rest of us.

ABC news said that buying water is the norm for most Hatians. There were pictures of people carrying water in big jugs. I don't actually know who they buy the water from normally, but obviously there is a disruption in service.

I got the impression that electricity and indoor plumbing is not the norm for the average Haitian.

I'm sure the earthquake damaged water mains and pumping centers. Also, what water there is now is likely contaminated.
