We recently had planned a trip to HHI for Thanksgiving. It has been a tough year (to say the least) and needed an escape. HHI seemed perfect for this! However, I recently applied for a job and got it! I realize it is so great in this economy since my DH has been out of work for 5 months. They are opening on 11/22. Not sure it would be a good idea to go away the first week of the Grand Opening. I guess the situation is bittersweet - we really need the income and benefits, but was really looking forward to visiting this resort and spending time away for the Holiday. I still haven't cancelled yet, since my orientation is Friday and want to hear them out and get a feel for the situation before I make any decisions on the trip. Thanks for listening, just needed to vent.

First of all CONGRATS on the new job:thumbsup2 My husbnd got a new job that started OCt 4th and in the interview he told them about a vacation we had planned for the following month. His job was totally cool with it. Does your new job know you have a trip planned? If so, I say go go go.:)

Congrats to your hubby!!! Not yet, I am waiting until the orientation on Friday to make my decision. It was an open interview process, and I was offerend the job on the spot (complete whilrwind). Didn't have much time to make decisions other then say "yes - I'll take it!" I'm sure it will all work out either way ;) Thanks!

Best wishes as you make your decision! Congratulations on getting the job!!!

Since it's the "grand opening" is it a job in retail?

If so I would face the music. Having worked in retail for years... If you want the "grand opening" which is also Thanksgiving off... Not going to happen! (If you told us that during the interview or hiring process we would tell you "sorry it's the vacation or the job" )

If it's not in retail I don't have a clue.

The job is not in retail it is a restaurant, a very large chain - so corporate. It is a "dream job" for me. I am very looking forward to it. I know how the service industry works, also have been in it for years. I never plan holidays or weekends off for that matter. I am waiting to see the scheduling process - there will be 4 of us in the current position. If I can "swing it" I will, if not, there will be another vacation in our future now that things are beginning to look up. :goodvibes

As I said it is a bittersweet situation...thanks for the advice - much appreciated.

If you have to cancel, try to book a trip in Jan/Feb/March so you still have something to look forward to. Best wishes and I hope this job works out for you!!

Good Luck! I never did resturants....

But you have the right attitude. Long term the job will be better and mean "more vacations" in the future even if this one doesn't work out! :)

Congratulations on your job. :cool1: I have been out of work since June so I understand. I also have vacationed at HHI and know how hard it would be to give up that wonderful relaxing vacation. I hope things work out for you one way or the other.

Did you use points for the trip? If so the holding rules are another thing to think about.

No brainer skip the trip. Doesn't make you look good.

CONGRATS..

What about going now? Just calling and seeing if ANY resort is open now and going for a few days.
Sometimes last minutes are the best ever.

I didn't use points. It is a cash reservation. I have until the 20th to cancel. Good Luck to you in your job search - sending good vibes your way :goodvibes and Thanks!

Unfortunately, I start tomorrow even though we are not "officially open", plus the kids are in school and Thanksgiving would have been the only long weekend to go. ;) I do agree about those last minute trips though - even though I LOVE to plan...:)
