May begin scrapping-HELP!

Our library is offering a 2 hour course on beginning scrapping. Between that and the internet, do y'all think I can figure this out? Anyone with any tips? I checked the Creative Memories website and unfortunately the closest consultant is pretty far. So I'm looking here for help.

Simba's Mom, remember how addictive & costly pin trading could get? Well, welcome to the world of scrapbooking!!

I went to a Creative Memories (better know around here as CM) fundraiser at school almost four years ago. It caught my attention when the CM consultant talked about how the sticky photo albums can ruin your photos & other memorabilia. that did it for me ... I came home & began removing everything from those old sticky albums. It took awhile. I even had to buy some Un-do to get some items off the pages.

For me scrapbooking (sb) is putting my memories - photos, wedding invitations, etc. - on acid free paper with some journaling - writing about the people, places, memories & events in the photos - & some embellishments - stickers, die cuts, eyelets, brads, etc. Some day your children & their children will look at your photos & wonder who, what, when, where, why, how ...

I turned around after you came up to me at the OKW meeting & you were gone. Sorry we didn't get to chat.

Yep you can do it. Your technique will be whatever you want your pages to look like. The pocketbook may not like scrapbooking though.

You can do it!!! Have you checked to see if there are any Close To My Heart consultants in your area? They have a very easy system for beginning scrappers with their Level 1 My Reflections kits, then move on to Level 2 and Level 3.

My best tip is to hold off on buying a ton of stuff at the beginning. I know it is a tough thing to do, but really you will be better off. You will need the basics: scissors, a paper trimmer, and some adhesive. I teach beginner classes and we let the students try all the different cutting tools and adhesives and let them decide which one they like better and that works pretty well for us. I haven't heard of anyone regretting any purchase they made after having the chance to try everything. As for supplies, bring your pictures when you are purchasing items and match everything to your pictures. Most people shop just to shop and end up buying things that they don't use or will never use.

There probably is a CM consultant near you. The CM website locator only lists the (what I call) super sellers. I am a CMC (for lasy 3 years) and don't do enough sales volumn to make it to the locator. It is misleading, there are many,many more CMC's other there. I will send an email to my CMC list and see if they know anyone in your area. You could also make a new post and entitle it "looking for a CMC near Harlingen TX", maybe you will get a response on this board.

I've just become a CMC (not near enough to help, sadly, unless you pay my airfare ) simply because I hosted a class and wanted so much stuff it was cheaper to do that! (OK, not the world's best financier, I know). If there really are none nearby, it might be worth going to stay with a relative who is luckier and signing up, you may find tons of business locally.

CM is fairly new in the UK - my upline is 70 miles away (that's a lot over here ) and she was referred to me by the CM website - does the American site have a link to ask for a CMC? Otherwise contact the one they have, she might be prepared to come to you.

In the meantime check under the sofa for any loose change - you'll need it

You might want to check around at your church or kid's school or work for fellow scrappers. Scrappers love to get other people involved and will happily help get you started (not that it's a cult ). Good luck with your new endeavor!

I guess I am the odd ball. I didn't have time to take any classes, but I did read this message board and Twopeas and looked at lots of layouts. Then I started buying stuff...and more stuff and more stuff and then 5 months later started my book! I had just about everything I needed and didn't need to run out for stuff once I started. Of course, I just went with basic stuff. I still don't know what sizzix or quickkutz or bazzill or any of that stuff is. But I love brads and things!

Invest in classes. Go to crops! Some are even FREE! You can learn a lot from the people sitting next to you. Don't go overboard buying "stuff". Start by first going through your photos and putting them in order. What order? That's your choice if you want to do it by year or occation or whatever. Buy the book "The Big Picture" by Stacey Julian. Buy lots of stuff from me. heehee

Really, when you are starting, grab one set of photos, go to the scrapbook store or a consultant from a company and pick papers and accessories (if you feel so bold, it's really not that scary) that match your photos.

Have fun and don't stress if you don't move quickly.
