May 5, 2010 Magic of Barcelona

Just checking the cost for a ferry if need be. Will cost about £1000! That's IF there's availability. Also have no idea what channel tunnel tix would cost if we drive. Maybe I shouldn't be panicking. :confused3

The flight ban continues now until 7pm tomorrow night.

Big gulp :scared: ...that is a serious price tag. I didn't think the ferry ran that high. Back in 2002, the ferry was cheaper than the train and easier to get too....the tunnel tickets sold out first. Perhaps that has changed? Hoping all this worry talk is moot and things are back to normal very soon. hugs

Well there's 6 of us so we need at least two cabins.

OK, enough! Let's forget this nonsense and talk about our cruise. We're all going to get there safe and sound/on time!!

Come on..let's talk formal night! I got my dress yesterday! And the best part is...it was too big! So it's going back tomorrow. ;)

I spoke to DCL last night and asked what the chances are of them cancelling the cruise due to the filght situation. The reply was "Disney has never cancelled a cruise and have no intention of doing so despite the flight situation."

There's a lot of Americans scheduled for the cruise however there's probably even more Europeans scheduled who are all probably working on alternative travel plans. Like I mentioned before, we're planning on driving if we have to. Won't be much fun though without my fellow American's on board.

Anyway let's all think positive and let the pixie dust work it's "MAGIC". :wizard:

Actually, there has been one cancelled DCL cruise that I know of....I believe it was nov. 2003 ish and it was so they could "break the cycle" of the norwalk virus. Highly unusual. I'm not mentioning this to say that I think cruises will be cancelled (I don't think they will be), but because I find DCL facts interesting.....plus it was such a big deal on these boards at the time!

Ha! That is the ONLY reason I would be happy with for returning a dress :). My formal dress saga has actually been a comedy of errors, soooo...I don't have my dress yet!!! eeek....but, it should be here in the mail in a week or so, and I'm crossing my fingers that it fits!

Oh!...and I am such an airhead sometimes, I thought you meant the car ferry...ooops :flower3:

Hi CJ's Mom

I'm having trouble with messages, too. I haven't received your reply. I originally sent two messages to you. The second has my email address.
Diane

CJ's Mom...I wonder if you got my PM or not as well? I'll resend just in case :)

I have been reading of Pompeii and the man who first made the plaster casts of the people fleeing the pyroclastic flow of the volcanic eruption. I am struck by the timing of current events.

NOAA has cautiously offered that the upper level winds should be shifting soon.

I too have already packed my clothes. It is soooo hard to not throw additional STUFF into my suitcase!

Oh talk about a comedy of errors! I ordered a pretty dress for semi formal night. It came from Hong Kong...that should have raised a red flag..but it looked really pretty. When it came it looked like the pic but it was so shiny! Shiny GOLD! Funny thing is it fits well and I have a pair of shoes that look great with it. But when I put it on I feel a bit like Tinkerbell! lol

This is my formal dress. I just decided on it a few days ago as I'm getting too stressed about shopping everyday!

I agree! I've probably been a bit too glued to the boards today because of all of this :) I did get an article from a friend that said the air space is starting to open up, so that's a plus! Another positive note, my husband's flight was diverted to spain before coming back to the U.S. and he said the weather has been lovely.

I agree with the others, that's the best reason to take a dress back! I managed to find a dress and swim suit yesterday very onsale at Belk. :goodvibes

Kaleigh,
I tried sending you a PM but alas I don't have 10 posts yet to allow me to send you our info. I will work on that and get it to.

I would like to to book a private excursion for Dougga. Did you do that through the DCL? Or did you book it on your own? If so, who did you contact? How much does it cost per person?

Thanks for any assistance!

The current conditions I believe will improve in time. I am more worried about further eruptions and more importantly sparking another volcano; Katla. The worry now is that the Eyjafjallajokull volcano may cause the Katla volcano to erupt. Scientists fear that a Katla eruption would be a much larger and much more dangerous eruption than Eyjafjallajokull was. The Katla volcano is sitting on a glacier that has much ice covering. The fear would be that an eruption at the Katla volcano would set about flooding as the massive glacier ice would melt from the heat of the volcano. The population around Eyjafjallajokull is sparse and evacuation took place easily. Another part of the fear of a Katla volcano eruption is that it has a much denser population and could incur more injuries or death. Volcanoes spark others and this is likely, just have to stay positive about all of this and take one day at a time. Hope for the best!

Yep, it is available to book on the site. Just go under your reservation to My Cruise Plans, then choose excursions. It is still available as I think we are the only ones on this excursion :) Okay, maybe not, but I have seen NO ONE else mention it. I am pretty excited because the pictures make it look so cool and it is off the normal tourist track, so should be peaceful.

There seems to be a glimmer of hope for those on the earlier cruise. Barcelona airport is still open and it looks like it may stay open as the UK are thinking about flying stranded holiday makers back to Barcelona. So hopefully it will turn out ok for people flying from America to Barcelona in the next few days for their cruise.
Not so good for us in the UK though, no sign of the ban being lifted, it has been extended til 01:00 tuesday am now. I'm not panicking yet but would be lying to say I'm not slightly worried.

Goofy mum, your dress looks lovely, you will look great. Mine is hung on the front of the wardrobe to keep me motivated with my diet as I brought it a size too small! It fits now but need to keep motivated to make sure it still fits in 2 weeks time :lmao: Strawberry Blonde, hope you get your dress sorted soon, sure you will find something stunning :goodvibes

So, I just called DCL to see if they have any plans in place if we booked air with them and the flight was cancelled. They basically said they are monitoring the situation and will let us know if the flight is cancelled. I figured that would be this answer this far ahead, but I just had to ask :)

Note to self: If you have a question, even if it's about a flight, always call the reservation sales line and not the DCL flight line. Everytime I call the DCL reservation line, they are super helpful, friendly, and provide amazing service... The DCL flight line, not so much.

if everything stays as is, I think we will all be ok. This will blow over in time. I am more worried about future eruptions and the sparking of the other volcano. There is just no way to predict these things and trying to make plans around the unpredictable is almost impossible! As for now everything is on and I am going about my plans as if everything will fine until told otherwise. I think we are being blown with the wrong kind of dust. We didn't ask for volcano dust, we asked for pixie dust!

Because I'm anal, I actually looked into this a bit. While there have been planes that have lost all their engines and had to get below the ash to restart, no one has died in an airplane crash due to volcanic ash. Since 1988, over 200 people have died in airplanes due to bird strikes. We still fly with birds in the air. This is an unprecedented event and I appreciate the caution European countries are taking, but I'm glad to see them starting to get some test flights and data and actually be able to make decisions based off of real information and not just speculation. No travel is perfectly safe, and I don't want to minimize the risk, but I also don't think we should overreact. Of course, I'm also glad I'm not on those first planes!
