May 25 Magic - anyone get sick?

Hi!

I have a friend who sailed with her family on the May 25 Magic cruise. Her whole family came down with some type of virus this week and she is blaming the cruise . . . I'm just wondering if anyone else who sailed on that cruise got sick?

I know this is an occurrence on some boats (we were on NCL in April when a virus broke out and they started taking precautionary measures at the buffets, etc., but we never got sick).

Thanks for any info!

Out of interest, and it may help others to know how long into the cruise did they start to feel the symptoms?

Hope they are all feeling better now!

Thanks for responding! They said they started getting sick just in the past few days - more than a week after the cruise - it makes me wonder if it was the cruise or something else?

They started getting sick at home, a week after the cruise, and they are certain they picked something up on the cruise?

sounds like a long incubation period for the sort of things that generally get picked up on cruise ships. Have they seen a doctor?

Nope, we weren't sick, and didn't see any signs of anyone else being sick either. Had a fantastic cruise though!

No worries!

For your eyes only, as it's probably not worth trying to change their reasoning.

"Clinical Features

NLV-caused gastroenteritis has an average incubation period of 12--48 hours and lasts 12--60 hours. Illness is characterized by acute onset of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Vomiting is relatively more prevalent among children, whereas a greater proportion of adults experience diarrhea. Patients can experience vomiting alone, a condition first identified as winter vomiting disease (66). Constitutional symptoms (e.g., headache, fever, chills, and myalgia) are frequently reported. Although rare, severe dehydration caused by NLV gastroenteritis can be fatal, with this outcome occurring among susceptible persons (e.g., older persons with debilitating health conditions). No long-term sequelae of NLV infection have been reported."

That's IF their symptoms are Noro like.

And glad you have an open mind about the source of the illness.
Either way, hope it doesn't deter them from cruising again!

Also, did they drive or fly to the port? It's possible they picked up the bug somewhere they ate after the cruise, on the plane, etc. Considering they were all traveling together, it could have been anywhere they were all together at the same time.

an illness can be picked up anywhere and hard to blame a cruise if you have been in contact with other situations and people as well.

I am always worried about getting something and we have cruised over 15+ times. we have been lucky so far. But it is not the cruise line to blame, but guests who board ill or who do not follow all the hand washing, hand sanitizing guide lines in my opinion.

Personally, and just my opinion, as we've only cruised once and that was on the Magic in April, was that the pools looked like huge germ fests. Two big pots of
"people soup". :scared:

that's one reason we never get in unless first thing in the morning or when everyone is ashore. I totally agree!!

If they started to exhibit symptoms of illness over a week after being off the ship - >168 hours, and even with say a 3 day 72 incubation period, that still leaves 96 hours so 4 days.
The rationale for blaming the sickness on being on the ship is dubious at best unless one of the medically trained DIS members on here know of some virus or infection that would exhibit after such a long time to exposure on the last moment of being onboard?

I was sort of doubtful it was from the cruise. They did not enjoy the cruise and were upset by a number of things that happened on it, which were out of DCL's control - their children wouldn't go to the youth clubs, so they had no down time, children wouldn't eat and got antsy at meals, etc. Also very upset by the way gratuities were handled on the ship and felt it was outlandish to slap them with a bill for tips (I'm sort of with them on that one! Wish DCL would either imbed the gratuities in the cruise fare or make them discretionary again quite honestly). But they have a 4 year old and two 3 year olds who are all in preschool, so this could have been picked up anywhere. I thought that sounded like a very long incubation period myself. When we were on NCL and a virus broke out on the second to last day, we were told that if we didn't get it within two days of getting off the ship, we wouldn't get it . . . we never got it!

I hope you had a great cruise at least!?! :woohoo:

The most common gastrointestinal viruses have incubation periods of 1-3 days. If they have been off the ship more than 3 days before getting sick, it probably didn't come from the ship. It is just as likely to have come from a playground, fast food restaurant, grocery store, or any place else they have been. To blame the ship makes no sense with this time line.

And...does it really matter where it came from? There is no way they can know for sure, and the important thing is that they are better AND that they understand the importance of good hand washing...since gi "bugs" are spread by hand to mouth contamination.

I agree with the flying thing - my neighbor who is a doctor told me just last week that many viruses spread on airplanes because of the circulation of the air.

We were on that sailing and my twins came down with a horrendous cough on the last sea day. By the time we got home they both had ear infections, coughs and all around not feeling well. Currently, my daughter and I both have it. I know that someone in our meet group also mentioned having a son with vomit/fever on the last two sea days and there is another group member whose family has the same thing we do.

As original poster mentioned though, we have small children and could get it anywhere, so it didn't ruin anything for us!

I got the norovirus on a ship a couple years ago ( got it 24 hours into the sailing... it happened... it was not fun at all, but i tried really hard to male the best of my cruise once i recovered). If it were the noro virus they would have had symptoms pretty quick after exposure. If it makes them feel better to blame the cruise there isn't anything you will be able to do to change their mind, but you will know better.

I truly believe my family got sick from the May 25 sailing out of NYC.

I started feeling sick, itchy throat Sunday afternoon after returning home.

By Tuesday my son started. Thinking it was allergies we medicated ourselves. Saw my Mom that Wednesday and she felt ill.

As of today we are all sick in bed with coughs, slight fevers, body aches and stuffy heads.

It was either the cruise or our day at WDW.

For the 3 of us to get the same thing is possible.

We were all on that ship. I didnt swim in the pools, my daughter did and is fine.
So that blows the germ pool theory. Unless her immune system is better than ours.

Im typing this from bed feeling like i got run over by a tractor.

So much for those wipes they pass out.

I'm watching Contagion right now... makes you think you how you can get anyTHING from anyWHERE and pass it on so easily...
