Some final thoughts

  • Wishing safe travels to all those traveling to/from/within Florida.
  • If we do dock at Cozumel, I think it would be smart to bring along a bottle of hand sanitizer.
  • Speaking of Cozumel and falling satellites, I hope I didn't offend anyone by implying that the flu threat is not important. I was just trying to point out that there are risks everywhere we go and whatever we do. There is probably a much greater chance of someone having a car accident or slipping in a tub than one of us getting sick.
  • At this point, it doesn't make much sense to call DCL for status on Cozumel. :sad2: DCL has over a week to make the final decision. My guess is that they will use every bit of that time to gather as much information as possible, before making a commitment. I also bet that they are actively evaluating several options for alternate ports.

Good thoughts all, ZeroG. :thumbsup2 They will only make the decision once they've fully assessed their potential liability. If they make the decision too soon, they open themselves to too many complaints or too much liability. It's the best approach for them.

I really am just rolling with this, since I do know that Disney has no desire to bring either of those things on themselves (complaints or liability). I do think the best decision will be made in the end.

If we can't go to Cozumel, I'm still hoping for 2 days at Castaway Cay!

Safe travels, everyone. I'll see you all on Saturday!

:thumbsup2 A NEW PERSPECTIVE :thumbsup2

I am paraphrasing someone else's response on another forum. I confirmed the information on the CDC website:

Every year in the United States, on average:

* 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu;
* more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications;
* about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.

According to the CDC, last year in the United States, there were 36,000 - THIRTY SIX THOUSAND, deaths due to flu or flu related symptoms. I don't recall anyone that I know barricading themselves in their house or fleeing the country. I'll keep washing my hands, sneezing into my elbow, and carrying my Lysol. Then when I'm on the beach in Cozumel I'll have an extra margarita because we all know alcohol kills germs. ::yes::

SWINE FLU
Health officials: No confirmed local cases of swine flu

A report on WFTV.com shows a doctor at Florida Hospital confirmed the case of swine flu from a Mexican tourist who visited Walt Disney World.

Health officials in Orange County said there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in the area, but some local news agencies show there is one case in Central Florida.

A report on WFTV.com shows a doctor at Florida Hospital confirmed the case of swine flu from a Mexican tourist who visited Walt Disney World.

A person who answered the phone at Florida Hospital's marketing department said officials were in a meeting and not taking any calls from the media. Officials at Walt Disney World would not comment and referred all calls regarding the possible swine flu case to the health officials.

Dain Weister of the Orange County Health Department said he is unaware if labs at Florida Hospital have the ability to test for swine flu. However, if they have the ability and someone tested positive for the virus, officials at the hospital were supposed to tell state officials first, Weister said.

According to a Monday afternoon update posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were no confirmed human cases of the swine flu infection in Florida.

In Mexico, authorities on Monday said 149 people have died of influenza, and at least 1,995 cases have been reported at hospitals. So far, however, only 26 of the deaths and 172 of the cases in Mexico have been confirmed to be swine flu.

There were 40 cases nationwide, most of which were in New York City.

Swine Flu Case Confirmed In Orlando

Posted: 10:41 am EDT April 28, 2009
Updated: 12:08 pm EDT April 28, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Eyewitness News has learned of Orlando's first confirmed case of swine flu. According to the chief medical officer for Adventist Health System, Loran Hauck, the case was diagnosed Tuesday morning.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," Hauck wrote in an email obtained by Eyewitness News.

No further details have been released, but Eyewitness News is working to learn specifically what days the tourist was at the parks and which park the tourist went to.

Details about the tourist, beyond being from Mexico, have not been released.

Eyewitness News contacted the Orange County Health Department late Tuesday morning. They said they were unable to confirm the report.

Disney told Eyewitness News late Tuesday morning that they have not received any confirmation about a swine flu case involving a guest.

I just watched a live newscast from a central Florida doctor.

So far, Orlando does NOT have a confirmed case of the swine flu!

Apparently, someone with flu-symptoms visited a clinic. The clinics ask patients if they were in close contact with someone who had been to Mexico or had recently visited themselves. If so, they send virus samples to a CDC lab for analysis. The person in Central Florida answered yes. It takes about 48 hours for the CDC to fully analyze the virus. The results from this sample have not yet been reported.

Florida Hospital Denies Swine Flu Case Has Been Confirmed
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Eyewitness News has learned of Orlando's first confirmed case of swine flu, however Florida Hospital is denying the claim, which was made by one of their own officers in an email. According to the chief medical officer for Adventist Health System, which operates Florida Hospital, the case was diagnosed Tuesday morning.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," CMO Loran Hauck wrote in an email obtained by Eyewitness News.

But during an early Tuesday afternoon press conference called by Florida Hospital in regard to Eyewitness News' report, the hospital denies any confirmed cases exist.

"We understand that sometime in the past 24 hours there was an email sent from a Florida Hospital person to another person trying to educate them about how not to get the flu," Dr. Scott Brady of Florida Hospital said during the press conference. "There have been some reports indicating that there was in fact a case of the flu somewhere in the Disney area, but that has not been confirmed at this time."

WFTV reporter Kathi Belich then asked Brady specifically about the email reporting at least one confirmed swine flu case.

"There have been no confirmed cases of swine flu by the CDC in Central Florida," Brady responded.

Belich then pressed Brady on the email from Hauck.

"I have not talked to the chief medical officer about this," Brady said.

"There are no confirmed cases in Orange County," said Dr. Kevin Sherin, Orange County health officer.

Sherin also told Eyewitness News he does not know whether local hospitals are able to "subtype" the strain of influenza A they are treating. The Health Department said they are more focused on the bigger picture of public safety and are trying to determine whether any cases are genetically traceable back to Mexico.

Disney told Eyewitness News late Tuesday morning that they have not received any confirmation about a swine flu case involving a guest.

Cruise Lines Cancel Mexico Calls Due to Swine Flu

Mexico Update, 12:25 p.m. EDT: Sapphire Princess and Coral Princess also avoided Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas today, respectively, according to a company spokeswoman.

(11:10 a.m. EDT) -- As people around the world become increasingly concerned about the swine flu outbreak in Mexico, the first round of port call cancellations has begun.

This morning, a U.K.-based spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed that three Carnival ships will skip Mexico port calls today. Carnival Inspiration and Carnival's Holiday were due in Cozumel while Carnival Elation was scheduled to visit Ensenada today. Carnival Paradise will also skip a call in Ensenada tomorrow. We're still awaiting further details on swine flu-related itinerary changes, which we're told will be issued at 5 p.m. EDT.

Also, Holland America has posted on its Web site that Ryndam will skip a scheduled call at Mazatlan today. The announcement says, "We hope to have clarification from the CDC during the day Tuesday, April 27, at which time we will advise regarding the remaining port calls on ships cruising Mexico." And in the U.K., Fred. Olsen has said that Balmoral will skip a call on Acapulco next week (the ship will have an extended stay in San Diego and an extra port -- Costa Rica's Puntarenas -- has been added).

At press time, we have not received new information from other cruise lines in the area, which include Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, NCL and Princess Cruises.

DORK or Disney Overload Relationship Killer. If your wife gets this there is no cure, just let it work its way out of the system. Depending on how severe the case it could take weeks, months even years!

You are so so so right Zerog!!! It does put it into perspective for us, being a nurse I tend to make light of sickness (my kids have to be totally half dead before I get excited). Remember too that Mexico City alone has 20 million people living in it....that is a lot of people, so not sure how the stats stack up with that. I am not worried, and of course have no wish to become ill, DCL will do whatever is best for us all, we will all still have a great time!

I am supposed to be getting ready and here I am sitting here reading all of this. Ok, I am going to tear myself away for another hour or two!

I can not emphasize enough the need to use extreme caution when accessing websites or clicking on links in emails related to the swine flu. Some of these sites may be serving up swine flu for your computer instead of you. Others may be trying to once again to take money from kindhearted souls who just want to help. It is important that we remain vigilante online and off.

Thanks zerog for all of the updates!

And my4bratz, the "DORK" warning cracked me up!:lmao:

I need to be working but I am so distracted! I leave early tomorrow morning (am visiting some high school friends who live in Orlando for a few days before we sail). And I still have a few errands. And I still have to pack. And I have some things here in the office that MUST be finished before I leave....

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly
contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by
hand, and even electronically.

This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).

If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues or anyone
else via any means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! This virus will wipe
out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with
WORK you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest liquor store and purchase one or
both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and
Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote
repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

Answer: CRUISE!!!!!
