We are flying into Houston, hopefully on the Wednesday. Hoping there will be some things to keep our dd(7) occupied, there has to be a zoo of some kind Im sure.

I think we may be hiring a car and driving down from houston on the Saturday morning . Must have a look to see whats in Galveston.

Bren

Yes - there is a Zoo and it is near the hospital district. It's been about 15 years since I have been to that one, but when I lived in that area, I went a few times. There is only one car rental location in Galveston, so from what I have found, many will either use DCL transportation or a cab or limo.

For those of you with a few days in Texas pre-cruise, I'd suggest considering some time over in San Antonio (riverwalk, Alamo) or the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin (Gruene, New Braunfels, Fredericksburg). A drive from Houston to San Antonio is about 3 hours on Interstate. You could easily make a triangular drive Houston - San Antonio - hill country - Austin (state capitol) and then back to Houston so you are not repeating your route.

Between Austin and Houston is a small town called Brenham, which is where Blue Bell Ice Cream is made. You can tour the creamery there. Of course, now that I look at the website, it looks like they charge $5 for the tour. When I was teaching in Brenham, it was a free tour. There are also several wineries... might be a way to stock up of wines to bring onboard for your stateroom. (Heck, I still haven't finished mine from Madeira on the WBTA!) The Hill Country especially has several wineries.

San Antonio has a zoo, Riverwalk, Alamo, Sea World, etc. Austin has Fifth Street (party area), the state capitol, and lots more. I have stayed in hotels in downtown San Antonio (on the Riverwalk) and Austin (a Hilton and Double Tree Suites there) and it was very safe and walkable. In San Antonio, Sea World is about a 30 minute drive from downtown, and we have stayed at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa out there if you have Hyatt points to use.

Houston gives you the skyscraper / big city perspective, while those other cities above give you more of the "Texas" perspective. I've presented at conferences downtown and had daytrips to Houston, and while there are things to see in Houston, if you want to see more of what you have envisioned Texas to be about, you might want to explore a little.

For those with more time, you could also head north towards Fort Worth. Great zoo, Stockyards, Omni theatre, Botanical and Japanese Gardens, Sundance Square (with Reata restaurant from the old movie "Giant"), and good Mexican food at Joe T Garcia's that has walls adorned with pictures of famous people and presidents who have eaten there. Fort Worth has a great downtown area (Sundance Square) that actually increases the population at night because of the loft downtown living available. Since it is less than an hour from my door, and I used to live in Fort Worth, I've never spent the night there, but there are definitely several hotels right in the middle of downtown with all the attractions either in walking distance or a short drive of less than 5 miles.

There is so much you can see and do in Texas! :thumbsup2 And don't even get me started on Big Bend or El Paso... you could spend a week in Big Bend alone! Awesome hiking.

And by the way --- in my mind --- this is the "EBTA Tejas to España" cruise! I need to find those Mickey Ears on the DISign thread with the Texas flag on them ;)

Hope this helps give some of you ideas as you plan your visit to the great state of Texas! Each link I hyperlinked above is to a different website, so you might want to click on those to gain some ideas. And yes, I'm a proud Texan! :thumbsup2

Anyone have a thought on how hot/warm/cold it's going to be once we get out into the ocean? Our thinking had been that we'd just be bringing summer clothes but wonder whether it might get chilly at times.

It doesn't get too hot where we are. Anything over 15C/60F will be shorts and tshirts for us.

Just booked my flights - Because Wickesy nabbed 'my' PE mileage flights I am now flying into Dallas but at least I got club seats. Anyway, one less thing to worry about and I see Southwest have almost half hourly flights down to Houston.

Hi everyone! Me and my boyfriend also booked this cruise. Last week I´ve heard of this forum, so I decided to register. We are from Holland and are looking forward for this cruise so much!

At least at Galveston Beach, students have been swimming since Spring Break. I'd bring layers, but more for planning on it being warm. We already had 90F days in early May here this year in north Texas, and as of today, I am already tired of summer!! :rotfl2:

Southwest has a ton of flights from Dallas Love Field to Houston Hobby. However, on Saturdays there is reduced schedule where it may run hourly (just in case you are thinking of flying down the morning of the cruise). The plus about both airports is that they are smaller and less congested, plus Hobby is at least 45 minutes closer to Galveston versus IAH, which is on the north side of Houston. Luv Southwest!

Welcome aboard!! Before booking our WBTA for 2011, I had never heard of DISboards... and am SO glad I did! Such a plethora of knowledge to learn -- which makes your vacation that much better!

Thank you Mandy for that information- Brilliant!

Thank you for your warm welcome! I am going to read this subject complete for all the stuff I can learn from all of you.
My boyfriend and I are really Disney-fans, we are going to Disneyland Paris as much as possible, our cat's name is Mowgli (he's allmost one year old) and in our house you'll see a lot of Mickey-details so making this cruise will be our perfect holliday. I really love to read everything of this cruise, we are counting down from January when we booked it.
Because I am from Holland, my English isn't the best, especially the grammar, my apologizes for that. But I'll try to do my best.

There is only one car rental location in Galveston, so from what I have found, many will either use DCL transportation or a cab or limo.

I can't remember which rental company that was now but they wouldn't let me do a one way rental so that's why I'm thinking of maybe sharing a shuttle if there are a few of us on the same flight or just getting a towncar for the two of us.

Just booked my flights - Because Wickesy nabbed 'my' PE mileage flights I am now flying into Dallas but at least I got club seats. Anyway, one less thing to worry about and I see Southwest have almost half hourly flights down to Houston.

I'm glad you managed to find something else Paul. :goodvibes

I´ve allready read a lot about this cruise now, so waiting so long is more difficult now! I saw a lot of you are thinking of visiting Europe and Disneyland Paris, that sounds great. Since a couple of years I´ve an Annual Passport for Disneyland Paris so if you have any questions about the themeparcs there, feel free to ask me. I also went to Paris once, that´s also a lovely city.

For now I have a question about the cruise, it´s our first one so everything is new for us:) What kind of clothes do we need to bring? I've heard things about formal nights, pirate party and more like that. Do I need to bring a lot of dresses or isn't that nessecary? Do I need to have a lot of different clothes or is it okay to wear the same more than once or twice?
Thank you!

(I'm so sorry, my English isn't the best:S)

And NO worries about your English!! You DEFINITELY don't want to hear my Dutch!!! ;) We had several on the WBTA who were with limited English but we were all just fine and still had a grand time with them. :)

We brought two formal dresses, and wore everything else twice. Did laundry once onboard. There are some pics on the Facebook page so you can see what some of us wore:

We also had shirts made or made them ourselves.

I think it was Enterprise, and their one-way rentals added $$$. After the latest hurricane, several car rental companies left Galveston. Several people are thinking of doing a one way rental to Houston Hobby and doing either DCL transport or private car hire from there.

I really like the Facebook-page! I've tried to 'Like' the page but my laptop isn't working really well so I have to try it on our PC. What a great pictures you've posted on it. Have you made more cruises or just that one?
This afternoon I was thinking that I forgot to say that I went to the docking-out of the Disney Fantasy on January 8 this year (Papenburg, Germany is like two hours by car for us), when I know how it works maybe I'll put pictures here.

That´s too bad, I can´t upload a picture of the Disney Fantasy because I haven´t post 10 or more. I was trying if it works, and then put the rest of them in a subject just about this ship, but when I have 10 posts I wil upload them!

Sarah (Binkytell) set up the facebook page, and pictures are coming from a few of us I believe. I can't recall their cruising history (think WBTA may have been their first?) The WBTA 2011 was the first Disney cruise for us, Binkytell, and Seraphine (Dawn), and we met via DISboards prior to the cruise. We linked our dining, and had a table of 12, and just had a grand time together! All three families are now booked for EBTA 2013.

For our family, WBTA 2011 was our first DCL cruise and first cruise for our two kiddos (ages 15 months and 5 at the time)... but hubby and I had been on 8 other 7-night cruises previously (Celebrity, Holland America, and Norwegian - each multiple times). Each line definitely has it's own pluses and areas to address for improvement, including DCL, but for cruising with our kiddos at their ages now, I don't think DCL can be beat.

Just make five random posts here... some will just say "random post" and submit. YOu can get to 10 posts in about 30 seconds ;)

It´s great to hear that here are a lot of people who made cruises like this so I can learn from all of you. My best friend went last year May on the EBTA and told me so much good stories about it that we decided to make the same cruise
