I just heard too and came to check if you checked in... you OK sea how is the family.... ok i don't know much about earthquakes but is 5.8 big......

Wife and son were home...they said it was shaking a lot there. Can't reach my oldest son - cells are down - want to tell him to stay off the freeways.

I am listening and they say so far not too much damage Thank God. Keep safe.

Yea, we seem to be OK over here, just some stuff that fell down and got jostled about. I think our gas is off..have to check on that. We have earthquake sensors on them that trip when it shakes over 5.0 or so. I am at the office and will go out check on stuff in a bit.

Here we are loaded on the plane to head for Vegas!

This is the first time I have flown SW since they assign you a spot in-line to board the plane. We were in A group so we our choice of spots on the plane to sit together. We actually got a spot in row 3. We joked the whole way that we were in 1st Class. I had printed out our boarding passes about 20 hours before departure. A lot of DH's work mates didn't get their passes until they got to the airport. They teased us the whole way about us "flying 1st Class." I told my DH that what happens when you travel with me!" Of course, I gave credit to my supreme knowledge coming from the DIS boards.

Just before take off, we were delayed. We had all boarded the plane and the captain announced that there had been a "bird hit" during flight. We needed to wait 20 to 30 minutes for a SW mechanic to arrive to inspect the plane and sign off on it. So, we might be delayed around 1 hour. A guy in the back of the plane jumped up immediately and said, "Hey, I'm a SW mechanic. I can do the inspection." He was quickly escorted off the plane. He did the inspection in about 10 to 15 minutes and we were off. I felt really good about the guy doing the inspection. If there were a problem, I felt that there was so way he was going to get back on our plane. ;)

We had a quick 3 hour flight. We picked up our luggage and we had 2 limos waiting for our group. Most of the group went in the strectch limo. My DH, his boss, and I went in the small limo. These two guys are huge, and squeezed myself into the middle of the backseat between them. We thought someone else from the group was going to ride up front but all the others squeezed their hinies into the stretch.

As we are going to the hotel, the driver asked us, "Are you going to THEhotel or Mandalay Bay?"

If this were a sitcom, it couldn't have been funnier.

A whole series of conversation, like "Who's on first." Proceeds with "Yes, we are going to the hotel."

"Are you going to THEhotel or to Mandalay Bay?"

"Yes, we are going to THEhotel, I tell you."

"Well, THEhotel is for VIPs."

"Well, we are VIPs."

"You are?"

"Yes, we are."

"I am president of my company."

"Oh, yes, you are VIPs.

"Yes, and we are going to the hotel at Mandalay Bay."

"So you are going to THEhotel."

"Yes."

Then I interject.

"We are VIPs, and we are going to a hotel. We are going to Mandalay Bay."

Driver - "Oh, your going to Mandalay Bay and NOT THEhotel?"

Me - "Yes, just Mandalay Bay."

Driver - Thanks!

I am not sure if DH's boss ever had any idea of what was going and was glad that I finally got the driver to figure out where we were going. He even commented later that he had no idea what was wrong with that driver and why he didn't just drive us to Mandalay Bay.

As you can see in this photo, THEhotel and Mandalay Bay are on the same property and in separate buildings. Had we been dropped off at THEhotel, we would have had quite a hike toting our luggage from THEhotel over to Mandalay Bay.

The portoco where we unload at Mandalay Bay was very beautiful and had a wonderful tropical feeling.

We get all the limos paid for and luggage with the bell hops and we are off to check-in.

The front lobby is beautiful and has this wonderful aquarium:

The front desk had a waterfall behind it. It really does feel like Disney World for adults here.

Now we have our room key and are off to find our room. We are on the 32nd floor. Room 914.

Well we get to the 32nd floor, but we can't find a room 914. We ask a house keeper and she directs us down another hallway. Her English isn't very good and our spanish is certainly lacking so felt there was a bit of a communication gap. Another housekeeper chases us down and asks to see our card. She notices that we are in room 114, not 914. There is a decorative "M" on the background of the card. One of the decorative loops of the "M" appears to make the first 1 look like a 9. About that time, another of DH's co-workers appears and thinks he is in the 900 block of rooms as well. It didn't help the the "m" grey and the pen used by the front deck was black, so it really was confusing.

Finally, we found our room.

Just checking in -- glad to see Sea has checked in and is ok... and glad to hear there's no major damage or injury reports so far. Hang in there Sea, and keep us posted on any updates!

Hi, back from lunch and checking stuff out at home and at the MILs. Everybody is OK. No serious damage or cracks, just some stuff fallen down and pictures crooked. Gas is OK, glad it didn't shut off...it takes the them a few days to come out and turn everyone back on. There has been a lot of aftershocks, about 27 I hear. I felt a few of them a little bit. Chino Hills was the epicenter of the quake. That is about 40 miles away from our home. The farther away you are from the center of the quake you get a lot rolling and shaking.

I heard from a friend at DL that they shut down all the rides and evacuated everyone and they are inspecting all the rides. Everything seems to be OK down there so far.

Seashake

Seacrest- Glad you and your family are ok.

Shelly- Do you think it will be really crowded? I have to be in Disney for Isabelle's real bday which is feb5th. So I figured we will just deal with it.

Sea - So glad you and your family are safe.

Huggie - Not sure what to expect as far as the SB, but I didn't want to take any chances. They say it will be crowded on the weekend Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon, I think I was told it was predicted as 8's & 9's for crowd levels.

Well, We want to get there Sat afternoon so I think dealing with a crowded Sun and Mon shouldn't be too bad

Sea- so glad you and your family came through the quake well and unharmed.

Hang in there through the aftershocks !!

Hey Lake we are doing good now that everything has settled down.

About 2:30 pm the power went out in half of Santa Monica so we were out for about 2 hours or so. People were stuck in elevators and such, traffic lights not working - don't know if this was a result from the earthquake, haven't heard yet.

Here are some pics of some damage from the quake:

And to top it all off we had a wrong way driver police chase on the 405 in the valley. Click on the video in the gray sidebar box on the lower right side. CRAZY!
