It is so scary for anyone of us having kids in college anywhere that something like this can happen!!

It is just so sad that the our world doesn't seem safe. You send your children to school and assume they will be safe and then something like this happens and rocks your reality. DD's elementary had 2 lockdowns this year (1 time due to a gunman in the woods across the street (ended up being a hunter) and 1 time because a high speed car chase ended in the area and the driver was then running and had a gun)! We live in a rural area about 45 minutes from any big cities.

I am crying so much now....22 dead.....28 injured. I was at all of these places all weekend. I can't believe this. I heard this at 10 in my car and I called my DS best friend. He lives in Pritchard. We hung out there (next to West AJ..the dorm that was shot up). He was just getting up right when it was being announced to the public. He said all the alarms were going off all over the campus and they have PA system thoughout the entire campus. Matt said it was repeating over and over "Take cover"

Norris Hall (the Engineering Building) is right next to where we spent most of our day. It is such a beautiful peaceful campus..I just can't believe this

Lisa-it is just awful. I'm glad you guys are home safe. It's hard to believe that there are people in the world who are filled with evil! It's so sad that this is how it manifests...to kill others instead of just killing themselves. I'm sorry for the killer's soul, that's all I can say. The whole situation is just tragic!

4:50 PM ET Update: Virginia Tech's president says 33 people, including the gunman, were killed in the campus shooting rampage. (AP)

Everytime a news flash like this hits my computer, I just feel more and more sadness. I agree Deb...tonight is a night that everyone gets just one more extra special huge hug!

Our prayers go to the families of all those students. I can´t imagine the pain they must be feeling.

I am way behind and I don´t think I am trying to catch up this time, but Carolyn told me that someone mentioned the earthquake we had a few nights ago.

We are all well, thank you, it was a big scare, but fortunately nothing happened, what makes any earthquake worse is that a lot of people remember the 1985 earthquake when a lot of buildings fell and lots of lives were lost.

When dh and I honeymooned in Acapulco, there was an earthquake (lots of earthquakes originate in Acapulco and that coast, so you can really feel them there) and our hotel room was in the 16th floor. DH and I ran to the stairs the moment it ended, we definetly didn´t want to catch another one in the elevator since earthquakes often have a replica.

The inside scoop from the kids on the campus is this a girlfriend/boyfriend issue. Lots of my sons friends have been IMing and posting on Facebook.

He was looking for a girl went to her dorm didn't get her and then hid until he knew her first class was in Norris...which meant she was an Engineering student.

The VT President is on TV giving a news conference now. I talked with this guy on Sat.....just so hard to believe......

This is just every college student parent's worst nightmare come true. You worry about the relationships your children have in college but never dream it could turn to tragedy.

So glad to hear Julie that you and your family are well and didn't have any damage or injury during the earthquake.

I saw on the news this morning that NYC got the second most recorded rain of any day since they have been keeping track. They got 7.5" of rain and the most was in 1883 with 8".

I hope your DH stays safe!!

We are so windy in DC today...about 50 MPH. My FL field trip kid is in downtown DC all day today on another fieldtrip. We got 3" of rain yesterday. Whe I took Gretchen to the bus stop we all thought we were going to blow away!! They say the winds will get worse as the day goes on.

Well, we are off to try and retrieve my Volvo. We just left it in a park and ride on Friday. I guess we will see what we find,

Have a good day everyone!

Good luck with the car!:thumbsup2

Car issues are just no fun!!:confused3

We had some blustery days last week, but it is calm and lovely today!:flower3:

Hope the rest of the day goes well!

Noel,

We have similar "Old" movie taste! We actuall own at least half of these!

Another to add that we just love is "Princess Bride". "An MLT sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean..."

Karen

Another good one...The Princess Bride.
The Outsiders was one of my favorites from the 80's but it isn't necessarily a great one for the younger kids.
And of course my other sappy 80's movie is Dirty Dancing.
And, the first 3 Star Wars movies (which are actually 4, 5 & 6 now).

Oh my gosh! I just said the same thing about Princess Bride!!

Then I thought of a few others, like Willow, Cocoon, and Dirty Dancing!!

We also love all the Star Trek fliks and own all of them as well!

Another "recent older movie" is Galaxy Quest!

I was trying to keep the list mostly for pre teen as OP requested. Willow is a great addition as are the Star Trek flicks.

Julie:

Glad you are safe. We worried about you :grouphug: Sometimes a little news is worse than alot because you don't have the full impact of what has happened. I'm glad in your case everything is fine.

Lisa:

Still sending you prayers and :wizard:

& I agree tonight we all should hug them really tight. (we may have to run to baskin robbins just because)

We actually had a code blue (a step below red) lock down at school a few weeks ago. I was driving to school a bit earlier than usual and watched with a sense of numbness a row of police cars (3) with shot guns pointed towards a laudramat that is located 3 blocks from school (same street) I noticed more cars (4-5) coming to the area (from the direct of school). I thought for a moment it was all like a tv show, but realized as I walked into the office and asked them if they had notice of this, that it was real life. They said nope, and called for a lockdown. Seems we have a bit of gang activity right down the street from our school and lately it's been rather dicey. But the police are supposed to call the school if this is ever the case. Had we not locked down many children would have walked right into that area. This is the 2nd one this year. The first time their was a "threat" of a parent with a gun in the parking lot. Fortuanely, it was a lying parent who was in a custody dispute and trying to make her ex into a trouble maker. But it was ridicolous. We had 10-15 policemen on campus during this time, what a was a resources. The only good thing I can say is that both of these times I happen to be at school. In the school. I'm always afraid of being trapped outside with my kids on the inside. My worst fear....because I can't bring myself to think beyond that, as it just can't happen in my world.

May the Lord be with the parents and families of those who are lost today.

Gunman kills 32 in Virginia Tech rampage
By SUE LINDSEY
Associated Press Writer

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman massacred 32 people at Virginia Tech in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history Monday, cutting down his victims in two attacks two hours and a half-mile apart before the university could figure out what was going on and get the warning out to students.

The bloodbath ended with the gunman committing suicide, bringing the death toll to 33 and stamping the campus in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains with tragedy, perhaps forever.

"I'm really at a loss for words to explain or understand the carnage that has visited our campus," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said.

He was also faced with difficult questions about the university's handling of the emergency and whether it did enough to warn students and protect them after the first burst of gunfire.

Investigators offered no motive for the attack. The gunman's name was not immediately released, and it was not known if he was a student.

Wielding two pistols, the gunman opened fire about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory, then stormed Norris Hall, a classroom building on the other side of the 2,600-acre campus, chaining the doors behind him to keep anyone from escaping.

Two people died in a dorm room, and 31 others were killed in Norris Hall, including the gunman, who put a bullet in his head. At least 26 people were hurt, some seriously.

Students jumped from windows in panic. Young people and faculty members carried out some of the wounded themselves, without waiting for ambulances to arrive. Many found themselves trapped behind the chained and padlocked doors. SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed over the campus. A student used his cell-phone camera to record the sound of bullets echoing through a stone building.

Trey Perkins, who was sitting in a German class in Norris Hall, told The Washington Post that the gunman barged into the room at about 9:50 a.m. and opened fire for about a minute and a half, squeezing off 30 shots in all.

The gunman, Perkins said, first shot the professor in the head and then fired on the students. Perkins said the gunman was about 19 years old and had a "very serious but very calm look on his face."

"Everyone hit the floor at that moment," said Perkins, 20, of Yorktown, Va., a sophomore studying mechanical engineering. "And the shots seemed like it lasted forever."

Students bitterly complained that there were no public-address announcements on campus after the first shots. Many said the first word from the university was an e-mail more than two hours into the rampage — around the time the gunman struck again.

"I think the university has blood on their hands because of their lack of action after the first incident," said Billy Bason, 18, who lives on the seventh floor of the dorm.

"If you had apprehended a suspect, I could understand having classes even after two of your students have perished. But when you don't have a suspect in a college environment and to put the students in a situation where they're congregated in large numbers in open buildings, that's unacceptable to me."

Steger defended the university's handling of the tragedy, saying authorities believed that the shooting at the dorm was a domestic dispute and mistakenly thought the gunman had fled the campus.

"We had no reason to suspect any other incident was going to occur," he said.

Steger emphasized that the university closed off the dorm after the first attack and decided to rely on e-mail and other electronic means to notify members of the university, but with 11,000 people driving onto campus first thing in the morning, it was difficult to get the word out. He said that before the e-mail went out, the university began telephoning resident advisers in the dorms to notify them and sent people to knock on doors to spread the word. Students were warned to stay inside and away from the windows.

"We can only make decisions based on the information you had at the time. You don't have hours to reflect on it," Steger said. He called the massacre a tragedy of "monumental proportions."

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was incomplete, said that the gunman had two pistols and multiple clips of ammunition.

Some students and Laura Wedin, a student programs manager at Virginia Tech, said the first notification they got of the shootings came in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m., more than two hours after the first shooting.

The e-mail had few details. It read: "A shooting incident occurred at West Amber Johnston earlier this morning. Police are on the scene and are investigating." The message warned students to be cautious and contact police about anything suspicious.

Everett Good, junior, said of the lack of warning: "Someone's head is definitely going to roll over that."

Edmund Henneke, associate dean of engineering, said he was in the classroom building and he and colleagues had just read the e-mail advisory regarding the first shooting and were discussing it when he heard gunfire. He said moments later SWAT team members rushed them downstairs, but the doors were chained and padlocked from the inside. They left the building through a construction area that had not been locked.

Until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.

The massacre Monday took place almost eight years to the day after the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

Previously, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history was a rampage that took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower and opened fire with a rifle from the 28th-floor observation deck. He killed 16 people before he was shot to death by police.

Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is nestled in southwestern Virginia, about 160 miles west of Richmond. With more than 25,000 full-time students, it has the state's largest full-time student population. The school is best known for its engineering school and its powerhouse Hokies football team.

The rampage took place on a brisk spring day, with snow flurries swirling around the campus. The campus is centered around the Drill Field, a grassy field where military cadets — who now represent a fraction of the student body — practice. The dorm and the classroom building are on opposites sides of the Drill Field.

A White House spokesman said President Bush was horrified by the rampage and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia. "The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," spokeswoman Dana Perino said

After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed, and classes were canceled through Tuesday. The university set up a meeting place for families to reunite with their children. It also made counselors available and planned an assembly for Tuesday at the basketball arena.

It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.

Last August, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus. The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

Fairfax County (that is where we live) closed schools 3 hours early because of the high winds (60mph)....we have lots and lots of temporary classrooms in Fairfax County and they were worried about them blowing over.

We have a media room in our house. Right now there are 10 seniors in there watching the VA Tech news and playing a game. 7 of them are supposed to go to VA Tech next fall. They are all boys, so I think they are trying to be tough....I hear laughter....but I know they are all a little scared.

Daniel goes to the largest High School in the state of VA...Westfield HS. There are 1,000 kids in his graduating class. 80 of them were accepted at Tech. Last year 40 kids went to Tech. I am just praying for all these families who are getting bad news now.....

This is just killing me inside.....so sad........

Sending hugs and prayers to all of you :sad1:  Such a senseless crime.

My DD called from San Diego this afternoon. Many of her friends are shocked and frightened about the shootings. I think for people her age it is a wakeup call that you need to pay attention to those around you for signs of mental instability or unhealthy relationships.

It is just so hard for her to fathom someone in such a rage that they felt the taking of so many lives was justified. What answer can I give her?

Thank you for the reminder to pray for all. I am so angry and this is not the right way to be.

Okay, sounds like two Westfield girls were shot. I just got this e-mail. Please pray for these two families

Reema's Samaha parents are down there now. They have been unable to get her on her cell phone - she was in the classroom where the shooting took place. Another WHS student, a basketball player, Erin Peterson, I think, was shot in the head. Don't know her current condition.

Reema was in Beirut during the bombing this past summer and we were trying to get them safe passage to my Mom's house in Cyprus - luckily the marines got them out - pray she is okay this time too.

Wow Noel, I just never want to have that conversation at all! I have no idea what you say to your child when they need to know how to feel safe given the circumstances.

There is no way to explain rationally what this young man has done to so many families. All I can do is reassure her that it is hopefully an isolated incident.
