Delta Update... I sent email to Delta about the baggage. This is there exact reply.
Thank you for contacting us.
Due to rising fuel costs and business decisions reflecting today?s competitive landscape, Delta will begin charging $25 for a second checked bag for Domestic passengers traveling on or after May 1st. This fee and baggage limitation affect non medallion members travelling on a economy ticket.
SkyMiles Medallion members, as yourself, and First/Business Class passengers will be exempt from this fee and will continue to be allowed to check up to 2 bags at no additional charge.
Also, we do offer an exception for Medallion members and First/ Business Elite customers. Please keep in mind that this is not a rule, but an exception that may be subject to availability and weight restrictions on the flight that you are on. This exception is for Delta aircraft only.
This exception will allow each passenger that falls into the above mentioned category, one additional piece of baggage at no charge and an exemption from the overweight fee for each bag that is 51-70 lbs.
Rarely does the weight and baggage issue keep us from offering this 3rd checked bag exception but, please be aware that it is possible.
Again, thank you for writing. We appreciate your selection of Delta and will always welcome the opportunity to be of service.
So for these airlines that are now charging for the 2nd piece of checked luggage, do you get a $25 discount on the price of the flight if you have NO checked luggage?
And when I look at expedia.com or kayak.com or any other such lfght search place, will it let me know the difference in price between an airline that is charging versus one that is not? Obviously, if I get one airline which allows 2 pieces of checked luggage with a flight at the same price as the Delta flight, the Delta flight now becomes $25 (plus taxes I bet too) more expensive (I like how they are then becoming more competitiveby increasing their prices).
Those that get charged the $25 fee by various airlines, I would be interested to know what taxes they apply to that fee. Will it vary based on where your departing/returning flight is coming from? Are there no taxes included? Yes as a Canadian I am often intrigued by taxation, we have so much of it here.
