How does MAW handle Wishes for kids who are not very verbal and aren't really capable of understanding a wish?

MJ's doctor has submitted her for a MAW. Since she loves WDW we think she'd loe something like DL or a Disney Cruise, but how do they determine that since she doens't really talk?

Hi MommytoMJM-
Can MJ say "Disneyland" or just "Disney"? I can't remember how old MJ is, can she print or point to letters that spell out Disney? You can call your local MAW office yourself and ask them about your concern. Someone at your local MAW office can answer your question. Can MJ draw Mickey Mouse ears and you can say "Disneyland" or "Disney cruise"? I know the initial visit, the wish granter volunteer from our local MAW office had my dd draw or write what she wanted as her wish. We were actually told this beforehand on the phone, to think about what dd wishes and he(wish granter) would collect the paper with a wish written on it when he came to visit.

Best wishes to you and MJ, to get a wish granted via MAW!! :cool1:

My MAW CP/Epilepsy and who-knows-what-else son is non-verbal.

When we were asked what Kev's wish would be his dad would joke with our wish granters that what Kevin really wanted was to just hang around with super models for a week.... As a baseball fan, I said he wanted to hang around with the Cleveland Indians for a week. ( I needed to battle the super model wish with something!)

After the joking we all knew the best place for Kevin would be WDW and they didn't argue with us. I think they have lots of kids that can't verbalize their wish, but they do trust the parents to know what's best.

enjoy!

I thought MAW required children to be at least 5 years old...gee,...is MJ five already or is that the case for MAW?---Kathy

Kids between the age of 2 and 18 qualify for a wish.

It's good to know the age requirement has changed. I remember one person posting here whose child was only three and didn't qualify and this child had a condition where they might not have lived long enough to get to the age limit of five. It seems like they also have broadened the definition of "life threatening" to include children who would not have qualified in the past. ---Kathy

My DS is non-verbal and they asked us what he likes to do I said swing, swim and play with friends. Since we don't really feel safe with him having a swimming pool we thought a playset would be the best choice they agreed and put a pool 2nd and a trip 3rd. DS got his first wish and we have a huge playset in our backyard now.

MAW comes to your house and does all the granting.. They take what you say as the wish if your child can't speak. They can tell if it is "the kid's wish" or the parents.

WDW was the BEST trip and staying at Give Kids the World is better then you can ever imagine....

Have a great time
