I have come to the most knowledgeable people I know. We
are children of the '60's, and for years had a waterbed. It
was great, but we were younger...anything might have been.

We are now older. About 4 years ago we bought a good mattress from a company (am I allowed to mention the name?) It's now a king-sized mattress with a big hump in
the middle, and you tend to roll off of the bed at the edges.
It's a good thing the "hollow places" keep you in.

We considered the sleep number beds, the tempurpedic beds, and would like to know anyone's good recommendation for a mattress that is comfortable and will
last!

Thanks to you all for all of the good advice I've gotten from
the Disboards, and I'm looking forward to more!

Seems the new mattresses do make "nests". Ours is less than four years old and does the same. If it does it in less than a year, some companies will replace the mattress. Shopping for a mattress is difficult because it's almost impossible to compare prices. All stores have different model numbers from the same company. One piece of advice - if you buy a pillow top mattress. Make sure it is pillow top on top and bottom so you can rotate and flip it every few months.

I hope to hear what others say. We really don't care for our sleep number bed at all. We spent so much money on it that we have just lived with it for a couple of years. However we have moved an extra twin bed that we have into our room and the last few weeks we've been taking turns sleeping on this cheap twin bed. Neither of us wants the sleep number bed. It's just not comfortable for us. In a couple of weeks we will have the money to pay cash for a king size bed--we just have to decided on one that will last awhile and be comfortable for us.

I bought new mattresses at Sam's after Katrina. So they are a little over 5 years old, and I still love them. Really cheap, but very firm which I like. Sometimes I will use a foam topper.

We bought a Tempurpedic Ergo that has a 20 year warranty. For the amount we paid, it had better last.

I hated this bed for the first month but now it's comfortable.

Have had ours since 2006 and have had to rebuild it twice already. Early models had issues with mold growing between the baffles and foam. Ours was one of those..all replaced. The issues continue with the pillow topper cracking, the plastic support bars cracked and there is an annoying space between the baffles that has no cure. So....am waiting for the day I can give up and buy something else. Oh and watch out for warranties...our 20 yr. warranty was not explained correctly. It is prorated so replacing parts and pieces has cost us except for the parts affected by mold.

I am in the same boat as the OP. The last time I bought a mattress was 20 years ago! Our mattress now dips in the middle but that is to be expected after all this time.

In doing research online, it seems NO ONE likes their bed at all. Every mattress or bedding company has complaints online about the mattress, the warranty, the company, etc. Just when I think I found a bed, I read tons of complaints about how it now caves in. Is there any bed out there that hasn't flattened down or caved in? I don't want to spend $3000 on a bed either.

Anotehr WB child here. I posted last fall about sleeping fulltime on an air mattress until I could decide on the right mattress. Well I have been sleeping on my 35.00 Ozark Trail AM since last fall and have had no problems9this was after my WB sprang a leak). I have had to only put air into it once since the original fill-although I think it could use some now. My ta refund should be here tomorrow and a new mattress is a purchase I will make-still quit frightened of this, as I just hate to put out lots of $$$$ and not be comfortable or be able to sleep. i will be keeping a close eye on this thread.

We have the Tempurpedic Celebrity Bed and each of our children have the regular Temperpedic beds. The only downside to the thicker beds like the Celebrity bed (which is now called something else) is finding sheets, the sheets are so tight you are basically levitating above the mattress LOL

We are so uncomfortable when we stay at a hotel and feel "springs".

We've had our beds about 7 years. You spend a great deal of time in them, so I think a good bed is important even if it costs a little more.

Some of the mattress retailers will let you try a bed for 30 days. We used 1-800-mattress and were very happy.

Years ago we had a waterbed but we put a pillowtop mattress in our waterbed frame about ten years ago. It is still as comfortable as when it was brand new because DH turns and rotates the mattress periodically. We chose the mattress by testing mattresses at a store.

Been there recently. We had a mattress for close to 20 years and it was time to get a new one. We had a horrible time finding one we liked. For any mattress, you are going to get good reviews and bad reviews. You can't trust what someone tells you is a good mattress because everyone's body is different and what feels good to someone else may feel horrible to you. You just have to lay on them and test them yourselves. We went through 3 in the past 6-9 months before we found one that we could both live with. I love it, and DH is so so on it. It is a Sealy, but I can't recall the specific name and know that they stopped making it about a month ago and are coming out with a whole new line. (Also, another trick is the mattress companies name mattresses different names for different stores, so it might be the same mattress with a completely different name somewhere else). I don't know if you have a Mattress Firm near you, but you might want to give them a try. The ones around here have gotten a new machine in the past month or two where they have you lay on a bed and the computer analyzes which mattresses will be best for you and spits out a list of all the ones they carry that should work for your body. That's how we finally got this last one. The problem with DH and I, is that none of ours matched up! Because the 1st one I liked okay and he hated, but when we got rid of it for one he thought he liked I didn't sleep on No. 2 hardly at all for 3 months (and he didn't really like it either- so he was dealing with bad mattress and cranky wife), he let us pick one off my list. It works great for me, so that computer must actually work (I was extremely skeptical to the point I was making fun of it when I did it). Also, when you are shopping, shop around and know the return policies of each place. The Mattress Firms around here, also recently started a really good return policy. They, and most places around here, did have a 1 trade policy but no returns. Now Mattress Firm lets you trade multiple times over a 180 day period if you are not happy, and you also can get your money back.

I have also come to the conclusion after reading reviews, that nowadays, the mattresses aren't made to last more than 4-5 years. I think the manufacturers were tired of people not having to buy new ones except every 10-20 years!

Oh, one more thing. We also found that mattress salesmen are like used car salesmen. They are always pushing you and telling you it is only on sale today etc. What we have found in the last several months, is that they pretty much are always on sale. They go up and down- it is isn't still on sale this week, it probably will be next week. Plus, they will make you a "deal" if it is not shown as being on sale. The models do seem to change out fast though.

I have slept on a waterbed mattress for 26 years, and just replaced the old mattress a few weeks ago. The old mattress was 65% waveless and had become very uncomfortable. I had considered going to a regular mattress because I needed it to be more comfortable for my back. Went ahead and ordered a 95% waveless waterbed mattress, and it is wonderful. Feels a lot like a regular mattress but it is still heated and very supportive.

My husband wants to get a new waterbed, but I wasn't
even sure they make them anymore. It's good to know that
there are other waterbed folks besides us! I really don't know why they went out of fashion; they are really comfortable!

about 5 years ago after staying in a W hotel in a "heavenly bed." I love this thing and often times can not wait to get home from vacation to my bed. We went with the plush top vs the pillow because of hearing of people's problems with pillow tops. (not this particular bed, but just pillow tops in general.)

I have had back pain for years in beds. We had an old style water bed that was perfect for me but was destroyed by the dog. After that I went through about 3 mattresses in two years. We tried several manufacturers and types, none of them cheap, and I could not spend more than 5 hours in any of them without back pain.

Then we purchased a local furniture store version of the Tempurpedic 10" thick mattress in a plush(soft) stiffness. I have not had back pain since. I can spend 10 hours in it without any pain at all. It took a few weeks to get used to but it was a god send and I cannot recommend them enough.
