Okay- for all of you that would love to help out my DD- I need an answer to her algebra problem.

Thanks for taking the time away from the election excitement to help her out!:goodvibes

The problem:
Write an equation of the line that passes through (5,9) and (5,2).

It needs to be in standard form. It has to do with equations of lines.

Whatever that is--- I am so dumb when it comes to anything higher than 2+2.:lmao:

We were in WDW last week and she is stressed totally out trying to catch up. :scared1:

So TIA!!!!!!!

Jo

Standard line formula is y=Ax + B where A is the slope and B is the intercept

So since the line would not cross the y axis B is 0 and since the slope is straigt up and down the answer is X=5

The problem:
Write an equation of the line that passes through (5,9) and (5,2).

Okay, standard form is y = mx + b, where m is the slope of your line and b is the y-intercept.

To solve for the slope, m= (y1-y2)/(x1-x2)
= (9-2)/(5-5)
= 7/0 or UNDEFINED

What this means is that the line is straight up (or vertical), and no matter what the y value is, your x value will always be 5. Therefore, the equation of the line is x=5.

x=5

y can = anything

this is from my DS

I am at the 2+2 with you!

Oh wow- y'all are all totally cool.

Thanks so much for the help.
DD is in honors and is having trouble- can you believe that her math class doesn't have books???? :eek: So--- nothing to reference.

DIS math whiz kids- you're the best.

Oh- and Golfgal- When it came time to do fractions on any test I ever had, I skipped 'em.:scared1:
:lmao: Thanks to your son! My DD said "he must be totally brilliant."

She must know something I don't :lmao: . He is a good math student when he wants to be. As for the books, check online. I am guessing they use one in class right? If not, all of the major textbook companies have books online for reference--Holt is one of them. You just might need to figure out the right chapter but you can find what you need online.

I'm just glad to know that I'm on the same page as schools in other parts of the country. I taught that exact thing last Friday and have been reviewing it ad nauseum this week.

Yea - but what is the value of Z?

::yes::

:thumbsup2

Yes, the equation of the line is x=5, but y=mx + b is the slope-intercept form of a line.

x=5 is in standard form because it fits Ax + By = C where A, B, & C are integers. (A=0, B=1, C=5)
