Master List of DVC Grills

Since VGF & Poly both have the new gas grills, timing use of them between families won't be as difficult as say with the charcoal grills that populate the other resorts. As for how busy they'll be... it really depends on if you run into a family gathering out there or not. Many days the grills go unused. For the most part, these grills are not located near something folk want to hang out all day at so once fed folk should be moving along. SSR is near the pools however. Take note, I have not had the opportunity to use the gas grills yet, but I've heard there is a lock of sorts on the grill to prevent passersby from turning them on. You'll need to seek out the 'key' from the front desk.

Thanks so much for the update!!! I will certainly ask about the lock.

A CM told me that they have also had issues with users leaving the gas grill on when they are done using them, maybe they were burning the grate off but it is an issue that Disney wants to address. Just think if not checked, the grill could be left on for several days.

:earsboy: Bill

Aulani had problems with guests leaving the grills on. It is a shame they can't put a timer on them.

Guys, this is a fantastic post for all those who like to Grill. I love to grill, but, never would walk 1/4 mile to do it. Since we got a THV ressie for Sep, and it is 10 feet away, I cannot resist. I had many questions - this thread clued me in on everything.

We live in Atlanta and drive down, so, I have some advantages as I can take some supplies (or drive to buy them). Some suggestions I did not see mentioned that perhaps can aid those using Charcoal Grills.

1) Charcoal choice:
  • Flying: I do not like Matchlight. It does not burn as hot and it is burns less hot in cooler weather. But, if means not grilling - I would use it. But, if you are getting a car / Taxi or using one of the Grocery Delivery circumstances I would recommend getting some charcoal.
  • Driving: I like to use the Chunk wood Charcoal - I may take a Home Depot Bucket (with lid) with my charcoal). Or, I would just buy it there.
2) Lighter Fluid:

  • Flying: I do not think TSA will like you checking in Lighter Fluid. And, why buy a bottle and leave it there?
  • Driving: I do not want to take Lighter Fluid in a hot car.
  • Suggestion: I learned 20 years ago Lighter Fluid makes food taste like uhhhhh Lighter Fluid. So, I use Olive Oil - which I will bring or buy.
    • Will lay out half my charcoal in a pile and saturate it in then light with a Napkin or Paper Towel. If it is not getting going - just add more oil.
    • Once the lit pile is getting pretty charred I will add the remaining charcoal and do the hokey pokey and shake it all about.
3) Things I will bring or buy:
  • Gallon zip-log bags are easy to pack. Used for marinating Chicken, Wings and Steak.
  • Probably five feet or so of Alum Foil to grill vege's.
  • I will probably drive down with basic spices in sandwich bags (Sea Salt, Paprika, Good Black Bepper etc.) For Flyers, I have no clue if TSA will like that or not? You always can send some of these things to the resort in advance.

We are going down specifically for the Food and Wine (as for the Epcot Food & Wine). But, I may let you all know I will start a Bom Brew & Que Classic and you are welcome!

For fellow DVC Grillers - that would be a Hoot to do during a certain night at THV each year and just walk around and enjoy different Brews and BBQ Items during a dedicated night at different Villas.

Does anyone know where the grills at the Poly are located? We'll be stay I g in a Bungalow and we plan to cook in the room and watch the fireworks our first night. I'm wondering if the grills are close enough to throw a couple steaks on them, or maybe a tri tip and head back to the room when they're done.

They are right behind Moorea. They have a few picnic tables there too, and the area is covered. We stayed in Moorea last time and loved having the grill there for a few nice picnic dinners!

Here are some photos of the gas grills at Aulani.

I'm impressed that they thought to put directional lights in near each of the grills.

Curious wording on the sign: it says for use of Aulani members and guests. Not trying to be a DVC snob, but does that mean hotel guests too?

Yes it does.

When you say "behind Moorea", do you mean on the water side of the building?

Towards the parking lot side :).

Thanks! That's just what I needed to know. I think that could be a potentially long walk back to the bungalows with our meat getting colder every step of the way. We'll just go with something on the stove or in the oven.

Poly grills are located in the triangle created by Tokelau, Moorea and Pago Pago. If you look at the resort map, you can see the area. It's a white spot with two white paths leading to it. There are 2 Viking gas grills. They each have 3 burners and a rotisserie on them. They also have a built-in light on the inside of the lid- great for grilling when it gets dark.

There isn't a "lock-out" on the grill starter. To start a burner, you simply turn it to high/light and hold the button in until you hear it light. There's also an external thermostat on the lid. 4 picnic tables. There is a wooden structure with a fan that you can turn on with a switch there. There are lights that automatically come on at dusk.

You don't have to bring grill utensils. Go to the front desk at the Poly and ask for them. You may get a blank look from someone at first (because they don't know about them), but make sure you let them know that they exist and you want to check them out. They are on a first come first serve basis. I'm not sure if they have more than one set or not. I was there last week -02/21-02/29/16 and checked them out on Friday 02/26. There's a check-out sheet that tracks who has them. I recall there were only 3 -4 names of guests who had checked them out in 2016 before I did.

Went to Publix over at Lakeside Village Center- 7880 Winter Garden Vineland Rd Windermere, FL 34786-5689 and bought steaks and ground sirloin for burgers. 3 meals for about $51 compared to who knows what on property and the quality was much better as far as an burgers there. Back behind MK where this Publix is located there's virtually no tourist traffic and less than 4-5 miles away from Poly. It is mainly apartments and townhomes occupied to a large part by Cast Members.

It's a great view of behind the scenes too while being accessible by public/private roads. Go after the trains have stopped running in MK. You approach RR tracks and can look to your right and see the front end of the trains where they are stored at night. Doors are wide open to the warehouse. Monorails are worked on back here too. CM and contractor parking is located here as well as Disney U.

Thanks! I see it on the map. Looks pretty far from the Bungalows. I think we'll stick with the oven and stovetop.

Don't forget about the picnic tables. Were completely clean. But, if you are going in summer- oh my.

Our plan is to hang out in our bungalow and watch the fireworks, although I see that some of the bungalows have a less than stellar view. I should find out where the HS bungalow(s) are located.

We stayed at the bungalows in September. We grilled two nights during our stay, had dinner on the porch and watched the fireworks. Our guests staying with us hung out on the porch and watched the sunset while we prepared the steaks. It was absolutely heavenly.

To be perfectly honest, it is a bit of a hike from the grills to the bungalow area. However, you normally want to let steaks rest for at least 5 minutes before you cut them so I found the timing worked out great. If mobility is an issue this might not work... But I wouldn't think it would take you more than about 5 minutes to get back to your bungalow from the grills.

Either way, you are in for a real treat in staying there!

We stayed at the Polynesian in a studio and used the gas grills for a lunch cookout. The facility is really nice! It's centrally located to the 3 DVC buildings (we were staying in Tokelau) and it worked out really well!
We also decided to bring a slow cooker for dinner in the room. I know that's pretty unconventional, but all you really need is a plug. We basically set it all up and did a sort of monorail pub crawl (Mizner's at GF, then Trader Sam's at Poly), and by the time we returned, dinner was ready! :)

We have reservations for GF in September and will probably do the same thing; looking forward to it!

@alltwelve , you brought your utensils and knives? I've never stayed in a studio that offered anything above plastic, so I'm just wondering and want others to be aware.

You can get the grilling utensils from the resort. Sharp knives and real forks should be brought with you. We like to bring plastic plates. Don't forget what spices you like. At resorts that don't have gas grills you need brickettes.
