Master Cleanse / Lemonade Diet - Thoughts?

I also wanted to add that if you do this diet for the 10 days, you can forget about your exercise routine. You won't have the energy and would probably pass out!

This is a cleanse to get all the impurities out of your body that diet and exercise can't do.

That's what the kidneys and liver are for.

Sure you can lessen their burden by cutting out processed food and other toxins, but if you're already eating healthy all this is going to do is dehydrate you and possibly throw your intestinal flora out of whack.

To the few who have tried the Master Cleanse Diet, and are giving me their experiences, thanks, thats what I was looking for. For the rest.... if you don't know what your talking about, know all (or any) the facts (as I don't, hence the reason I'm trying to get some first hand experiences), why bother to comment - and most of the comments be rude? Its just unflattering to yourself, really.

Hope everyone has a great day!

BTW - I will be starting my MASTER CLEANSE as of tomorrow..... I don't know how long I will last - I'd love to be able to do at least 5 days, but I may only able to do 2.... I don't know how it will react with my body, so I'm going to go slow with it, and see what happens.

So when you said -"Any thoughts appreciated"
you didn't really mean that right?

You sound like you are going to do it no matter what -so have at it

But your body has it's on cleansing system -it is called your LIVER

And I do know what I am talking about.

No, "Any thoughts appreciated" is exactly what I ment - from people who had done it though. I was looking for peoples experiences, maybe I should have spelled that out.

I'm sorry -you just seemed to get so angry when people tried to talk you out of it.
Just be careful -you don't want to faint

I didn't see any rude comments. Who was rude?

You asked for thoughts and we gave them. Good luck with your cleanse. Hope you get the results you're looking for.

The Real Deal on the Master Cleanse Diet

The Master Cleanse Diet, also known as the Lemonade Diet, is a liquid diet of water, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. In other words, you are only allowed to drink lemonade about 6-12 times a day, a glass of salt water, and an herbal laxative tea once or twice a day. The diet was promoted by Stanley Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanser in 1976. It was intended to treat ulcers and detoxify the body rather than lose weight. It has become popular again with Peter Glickman’s book Lose Weight, Have More Energy, and Be Happier in 10 Days published in 2004.

Will this diet really detoxify the body? One of the main arguments for using this diet is that the lemon or lime juice will help cleanse the body. The truth is, the stomach acid that your body produces is 10 times stronger than lemon or lime juice, meaning that lemon or lime juice will do very little besides give you vitamin C. Maple syrup is the same as using sugar, and cayenne pepper adds some flavoring.

In reality, the body actually detoxifies itself. Food goes to your stomach where it is broken down by stomach acid. This liquid mixture moves into the small intestine where stomach acid is neutralized and nutrients are absorbed. Any remaining material passes into the large intestine or colon, where water is absorbed, forming solid stool. The body can store a large volume of stool in the large intestine, but these wastes are eliminated quickly ranging anywhere from once a day to once a week. Other wastes or toxins are naturally cleared from the body by the liver and the kidneys and are eliminated through urine.

So will you lose weight on this diet? The amount of calories in this diet is only 600-1200 calories per day or about 100 calories per glass. The recommended daily caloric intake for the average adult is 2000 calories. Essentially, this regimen is a fast which puts the body into a state of starvation. During starvation, fat is lost, but the body also breaks down muscle to provide enough fuel to vital organs such as the brain and heart and slows down how quickly it burns calories to conserve energy. Some weight may be lost, but it will be difficult to maintain.

Is this diet safe? For the average healthy person, a day or two of fasting will probably not have any ill effects, but that does not mean that the diet is safe. The diet actually calls for about 10 days of fasting. In addition to being a very low calorie diet, this diet is nutritionally deficient in protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals. Also, using a laxative to help purge the body in an attempt to lose weight is characteristic of the eating disorder bulimia. This type of diet is often accompanied by weight loss and subsequent regain. Weight cycling stresses the body, in particular the cardiovascular system. There are definitely much safer and more sustainable ways to lose weight that do not incur long-term health risks.

I am a firm believer in natural approaches to health, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding toxins. However, popular diets or detox programs may not always be safe or appropriate for you. I recommend discussing diet plans with your physician, particularly if the diet calls for dramatic changes or if you have any medical conditions.

My son did the MC and he was happy with the results. He was looking to lose weight and did while he was on the cleanse. This is not the best reason, you will put the weight back on after the cleanse. He felt good after the first few days, those were difficult. His energy level was much better after a few days, way better then before the cleanse. I think it was because he stopped eating those foods that "weigh" you down, no fatty foods, no dairy and no caffeine.

I have thought about trying it but I am not disciplined and would never be able to last one day so I did not want to food with it. I have read that if you use organic lemons the results are better. Let us know how you do.

Just so that you know, an acquaintance was diagnosed with s colon disease and was scheduled to have a portion of it removed. He was not happy with that option, I think he was going to need a colostomy bag after the surgery. Anyway he did a cleanse, not this one. He was able to avoid the surgery and has changed the eating habits that caused the condition. I wish I knew more of what happened but this was several years ago and I was told by another acquaintance so this is not first hand at all.

Cheers!!!

The Real Deal on the Master Cleanse Diet.....

I appreciate this - this is what I was talking about. If you have experienced the cleanse yourself, of if you have something "knowledgable" to cut and paste here, thats great. What I didn't appreciate was people just spouting out that "oh its bad - I don't really know why, or what the heck the master cleanse diet is, but its just bad."

Thanks for the article.

Maybe you'd be better off posting this on a diet or healthy living related message board instead of a Disney board. You'd probably find more like-minded people there regarding the cleanse.

Well, most of us "know" it's bad because we have the life experience to understand when something is designed mostly to separate people from their money. Any reputable medical site can teach you the basics about "cleansing" and if you understand the way the human body is designed to work you will see that programs like these are just silly.

Why do this to yourself when it's completely unnecessary??? Just continue to hydrate yourself well, eat a healthy balanced diet and play tennis. Your body will take care of the rest.

I've never done a cleanse, because everything I've heard and/or read about them says they don't do anything at all. Actually, I just read this yet again in my Fitness magazine today! So, I will have to agree with the majority, and say not to waste your time.

I've heard this stuff is awesome:

I really want to try the Master Cleanse diet to "re-start" my body, and I'm wondering in anyone here has ever tried it. How is it - is it really hard? When you finish the 10 days, and start eating again, to you just put the weight back on? Not that I'm just doing it for weight loss, just wondering.

Any thoughts are appreciated! :flower3:

I have only read this post and it's all I'm going to read.

Check out the forums at the official site. They have TONS of info. What to do , how to do it, what NOT to do, etc.

I've done the MC periodically since the early 90s. For me it does not have a permanent weight loss effect, b/c I'm very bad after I come off of it, and I don't make changes. I'm sure that if I really changed the way I eat (I'm already ovo lacto veggie) I would do better.

But I use it to really get the yuck out, to feel bodily and mentally refreshed, and as sort of a "let's ignore food and meditate on what food really means to me" thing.

Sept '07 hubby and I did the fast. He did the 10 days, but I was just getting into it...I went 20 days and could have done more, but we were coming up o my 20th HS reunion and our big Disney trip, and I wanted to have the days to come down slowly from the fast b/c I wasn't going to do it while traveling.

I found out about the MC from friends while we were in chiro school...some of them used it like I do, while others wanted to make drastic dietary changes and did the MC to prepare. They had some amazing experiences.

I will tell you though...until the 5th day is done, it's miserable. It's weird, b/c you are taking in calories from the grade B organic (well, I get organic) maple syrup (which tastes NOTHING like grade A), but it feels almost worse than if you just didn't eat a thing. Anyway, after the 5th day has always been my "ahhh, that's better" moment.

I would also recommend getting off of caffeine BEFORE the fast. Nasty to have caffeine withdrawals and food withdrawals at the same time. Do it separately. :)

Be sure to join their forums, they are really terrific over there!

I've done it, so I can post here.

You sound hungry already. I would advise against it. :lmao:

"Any thoughts appreciated," really means "only people that agree with me."

It all sounds unhealthy to me.
