MASSACHUSETTS....first State.......

It IS the government's business because the government of MA foots the bill for a lot of people's healthcare.

It is MY business because I, as a tax payer, pay for a lot of people's healthcare - not the government. If I want to eat french fries that have soaked in trans fat for 2 days then I should be able to do so because *I* am responsible for what goes into my mouth, not the state of MA.

The problem runs much deeper than trans fats, unfortunately.

I heard that Philly is seriously considering doing the same thing.

They should just stay out of it IMO.

As always, I'm on the side of freedom. People should be free to do as they please and make their own choices. So, I see this as a sad state of affairs.

Exactly. Plus people will just cross the border to get better fries in trans fat friendly states. I know I will stay on my side of the line more, which is a shame because that means a loss in revenue for MA restaurants because I know for a fact I'm not alone in this sentiment.

This is one of the many reasons why I'm so ready to get out of this state and go back south.

As soon as my son graduates high school, I'm right there with you! I can't stand this state :(

The way I see it, you're lucky to live in such a small state. I can't imagine what I would do if this state started pulling stuff that would make me want to go to another state (or country - Canada) on a regular basis.

I have said this on other trans fat threads, but I'll say it again. ;)
1) The government should not dictate whether restaurants use trans fats or not.
2)Trans fats are one of the worst things you can eat.
3) Food is all ready regulated through the FDA, and the FDA does have some new labeling laws with regard to trans fats. One thing to be aware of is that if something is labeled trans fat free, it may not be. Manufacturers can still use 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving and label it trans fat free. Check the ingredients. If there is partially hydrogenated oil listed it is not trans fat free.
4) The world is not going to end if trans fats cease to exist.

Spoken like a true libertarian...my DH is always lamenting the paternalistic, big-brother attitude of this state. My own favorite mantra is "people make choices".....so let them!!!!!!!!!!

1) Transfats are bad for your health
2) No government has any business legislating it.

Honestly... what's next?

So wait....this is in the same state where schools were banning kids form playing tag, right?

Ridiculous.

this is a bad rule, if it happens all over, there will be back ally eating of cheesebergers, they will not be able to be eating safely, its a persons right to choose :rotfl:

Cheeseburgers do not contain trans fats, the bun might but not the cheese or the burger. So no need to worry about back alley cheeseburger eating. ;) :teeth:

I want the stinkin bun

No PD, they'll be in the back alley scarfing down chocolate chip cookies :rotfl2:

I don't think anyone is saying the lack of trans fat is going to be the end of the world, but I do think it's a sad commentary on the state that they don't trust their tax payers with the decision as to what they put in their bodies. I'm not a 4yr old and even my food controlling Mother allowed me to have french fries and baked goods once in a while. Even *gasp* using cake mix, which has lots of trans fats in it.

This will help put the Mass economy in the toilet. Its already hard enough to survive as a restaurant, to make a profit etc., etc., this will ensure that 90% of them for sure will go out of business, and with it the state economy. Love this big brother style of governement, way ta go.

People get the government they deserve. As a Massachusetts citizen, the people of this state re-elect the same idiots election after election.

I can't think of one good politican in the state except for our Governor and even he is leaving soon, smart man. It is very hard dealing with idiots on a daily basis in this state.

I wonder what private matter the government will get involved in next?

:rotfl: the Trans Fat Black Market......just what this state needs!

Massachusetts residents, have no fear. I have plans in the works to smuggle large quantities of hamburger buns and fried chicken across the border. For the right price, trans fats can be all yours :teeth:

Believe me I am in the camp with saying the government shouldn't tell restaurants what to do with trans fats. But food is all ready regulated by the FDA and restaurants are regulated by the board of health (sanitation matters), so doesn't government all ready have its hands into food and restaurants?
