Oh gosh, in a temple...

ETA: Police officer intervened and shot gunman multiple times. Appears officer killed gunman. Officer shot as well, reportedly now in critical condition. People shot outside temple as well. Seven people killed - four inside, others outside. All else unclear right now according to CNN. Possible another shooter still in temple.

Just heard about this. A lot of my family lives in Wisconsin and are all talking about it. So sad for all of those affected. A church is supposed to be somewhere you can go to find some peace.

I saw this break on twitter almost immediately and have been following it all day. I live in Wisconsin, so we're obviously devastated here. When I moved here, I looked at 2 cities to move to- Madison and Oak Creek. I chose Madison, but looking at moving to Oak Creek to study in Milwaukee next fall.

Oak Creek is known to be very safe and charming, and the residents would literally give you the shirt off their back. It truly makes me ill to see this happen in their (or any) community But it won't stop me from moving there next fall. Prayers and good vibes to everyone affected

If you think about security, there's really no place you're "safe" (ok, maybe the police department or national guard armory).

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea and was actually thinking it was some sort of Jewish religion because it was referred to as temple.

I was flipping channels when I first heard of it, and OMG the announcer made me so mad. He was saying that someone said a family member got a call from someone inside and that "the women and children were hiding in a closet". WHY say that before they knew that the shooter was captured (or dead)? If the gunman (or suspected gunmen at that time) heard reports like that they could have headed directly to check closets to do even more damage. Ugh.

No, not TV, but what if that report also went to the police and they broadcast it over a scanner - sometimes criminals do use scanners to hear what LE is going to do. I don't know, it just seemed inappropriate at the time to put the location where people were trying to hide over the air, KWIM?

There have been instances in the past where someone has taken hostages and the news has broadcast what the police are doing outside and the hostage taker watched it all live. I'm pretty sure in hostage situations these days they cut the lines into the building.

This was however not a hostage situation. Nothing but a sad, senseless situation!

I don't know, I'd feel much safer in a country where 95% of the population doesn't own guns, instead of where 50% of the guns WORLDWIDE are purchased even though we only have 5% of the worldwide population.

For the moment, I just want to say how awful this is. They're reporting that it seems like an instance of domestic terrorism--obviously we'll know more soon, but based on his styling/tattoos, they seem pretty sure that it was a hate-crime massacre.
