Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

Dh is on the road and stopped at a truck stop in FL for the night. He was waiting for his food when a lady that was also waiting started talking and was obviously very stressed. She told him she was on her way to Orlando. Her brother worked as a bartender in the club. . She had not been able to get him on the phone all day. Dh said his heart just went out to her. All he could do was choke out that he will be praying for her brother and for her to get there safely.

That's interesting. I was saying to my husband earlier today that I thought that emergency exits might be an issue.

You'd think with the devastation we've seen - even specifically with nightclubs - from fires when emergency exits are not accessible, there wouldn't be a club around that would screw with the emergency exits. In the case of a fire it can be the difference between zero fatalities and dozens of fatalities because many people get crushed or trapped when going for marked exits and then have no opportunity to seek an alternative exit.

this is not about anything other than hatred. People need to realize that Isis wants to annilate the western world.

They don't care I what oder LGBT, capitalist, civil
rights activists, liberals or conservatist as long as we are dead they win.

Wake up and smell the coffee. We at not against each other we need to be united against our annihilation.

If they want to annihilate the western world why are they not targeting sources of power in the country - military posts, business sectors, government buildings, etc.
As horrible and disgusting this attack was targeting 20 year old club goers in Florida isn't going to annihilate western culture.

Yes, I remember the fire in New England when the exits were locked. If they were indeed locked then the owners of the night club are also culpable.

I'm sure this is one of many human stories out there today...we cannot know the grief and utter despair so many are suffering right now.

Just caught the tail end of an interview with one of the survivors, but it sounded like he was saying that the exits were padlocked shut. The shooter was able to just stand at the main entrance and they were all trapped inside with no other means of egress. If true, the nightclub owners are going to have a lot to answer for.

I agree. I was just looking around to see if I could find anything written about this, and I don't see anything yet.

I did come across an article that diagrams the layout of the club.

I haven't seen anything either. This was an interview from someone inside, so don't know how accurate it is.
There have been a couple of other things mentioned throughout the day - 1) I think it was a DJ that knocked down some sort of room divider that allowed a lot of patrons to go into a part of the club reserved for staff, and 2) that ultimately, police drove through a wall in an armored vehicle to get into the club, where they distracted the terrorist with a bomb before engaging in a shootout with him, in which he was killed. ETA and oh yes, hearing reports on TV that police removed an air conditioner from a window to allow people to escape, also. :confused3

The gun mans dad is giving an interview on ABC...said he saw his son yesterday. No idea why it happened...hmmm not sure I buy it

If there were padlocks placed on the doors by the owners, I hope they are prosecuted. They never learn, the Iroquois Theater in 1903, the Coconut Grove in 1942 and the Station in 2003. Over 1100 people dead because an owner was worried about people sneaking in/out without paying.

If it is proved that the doors were padlocked, it is also possible that the shooter padlocked them himself. Studies have shown in a panic in a public venue, people tend to ignore alternate exits and try and leave by the door they entered through.

LOL, ISIS would love that. What they can't accomplish with guns and bombs, they convince us to do to ourselves.

Um no. Especially since its not MY constitution as I'm Canadian. I think constitutions do and should change and evolve with time. Society changes and so do the documents governing society.

But whatever I was just trying to get clarification on pp.

"No attack is too small."

From the NY Times, today:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/13/us/orlando-omar-mateen-isis.html?_r=0

"This public oath is about the only requirement that the Islamic State imposes on followers who wish to carry out acts of terror in its name. In an annual speech, the terror group’s spokesman, Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, last month incited its supporters to carry out killings abroad during the holy month of Ramadan.

No attack is too small, he advised, specifically naming the United States as a target. “The smallest action you do in the heart of their land is dearer to us than the largest action by us,” he said, “and more effective and more damaging to them.”

As early as September 2014, Mr. Adnani made clear that anyone and everyone could, and should, carry out acts of terror in the group’s name. “Do not ask for anyone’s permission,” he said, and suggested that sympathizers who could not buy weapons should instead use rocks, knives or even cars to kill infidels.

Since then, the group has worked hard to create a mechanism for inciting terror in situ. It floods the internet with gory propaganda, and employs an army of keyboard jihadists to push the deadly message on Twitter, Facebook and other social media.

In this case, there was a stark resonance between Islamic State propaganda and the killer’s choice of target. The jihadist group has publicized its hatred of homosexuals, including releasing images of fighters killing people suspected of being gay by throwing them off tall buildings."
