Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

I saw a quote earlier today that sums up how I feel about this horrific terrorist attack.

"Our nation stands together in solidarity with the members of Orlando’s LGBT community. They have been through something that nobody could ever experience. This is a very dark moment in America’s history. A radical Islamic terrorist targeted the nightclub, not only because he wanted to kill Americans, but in order to execute gay and lesbian citizens, because of their sexual orientation.

It’s a strike at the heart and soul of who we are as a nation. It’s an assault on the ability of free people to live their lives, love who they want, and express their identity. It’s an attack on the right of every single American to live in peace and safety in their own country.

We need to respond to this attack on America as one united people, with force, purpose, and determination."

Made it through that interview. I don't remember the last time I saw an interviewer reach out like that and eventually hug his interviewee. Tears are streaming down my face.

I apologize if this has already been posted and I missed it:

These are my work shoes from Saturday night. They are brand new, not even a week old. I came to work this morning and saw these in the corner my call room, next to the pile of dirty scrubs.
I had forgotten about them until now. On these shoes, soaked between its fibers, is the blood of 54 innocent human beings. I don't know which were straight, which were gay, which were black, or which were hispanic. What I do know is that they came to us in wave upon wave of suffering, screaming, and death. And somehow, in that chaos, doctors, nurses, technicians, police, paramedics, and others, performed super human feats of compassion and care.
This blood, which poured out of those patients and soaked through my scrubs and shoes, will stain me forever. In these Rorschach patterns of red I will forever see their faces and the faces of those that gave everything they had in those dark hours.
There is still an enormous amount of work to be done. Some of that work will never end. And while I work I will continue to wear these shoes. And when the last patient leaves our hospital, I will take them off, and I will keep them in my office. I want to see them in front of me every time I go to work. For on June 12, after the worst of humanity reared its evil head, I saw the best of humanity of come fighting right back. I never want to forget that night.

I believe they meant to say they have already been brainwashed to not believe them. I watch multiple news sources and for the past few years fox has been pretty spot on and usually first to report the actual truth. Not always but most of the time. Only once other news outlets are called out on it do they come around. Oh, btw, fox was right.

Yeah, I haven't been brainwashed, thanks. I don't trust much mainstream media. And before you go there, no, I'm not paranoid, nor am I a conspiracy theorist.

I was listening to NPR this morning and they brought up two points and I don't know if they were discussed earlier in the thread.

The first point is that the shooting was done on Latin Night and perhaps Hispanic people were also a target group. Unrelated to that, a person said in that same interview that some people were outed in death.

The second point is that there is currently no concrete proof that the shooter was indeed associated with and directed by Daesh other than his 911 call. According to Salon (http://www.salon.com/2016/06/13/orl...islamist_groups_that_are_fighting_each_other/) he previously claimed associations with other groups like Hezbollah which is Shia instead of Daesh which is Sunni. Hezbollah is fighting Daesh in Syria so being members of both groups is not possible. The FBI closed their investigation on him because he didn't seem to understand how al-Qaeda really worked.

You try to compartmentalize and remain clinical...but sometimes, it's just not possible.

Thanks.

I believe some were outed in death. I know in the Hispanic community being gay can be very taboo and can get you disowned fairly quickly. I wonder how those families will deal with the shock of death and the shock of them being gay. If some will even "disown" them in death and refuse to give their family member a proper burial.

Many people there weren't gay. I go to gay bars at times. It's always a fun time.

Some children have surgeries as children that, even if they need additional surgeries for the same thing as an adult, are only performed by a pediatric surgeon. The reason for this is because adult surgeons wouldn't see enough to get good at them, nor would they stock the right equipment in an adult hospital, etc. so if someone there that night had one of these type surgeries before, and was injured, say, they may need the expertise of a pediatric surgeon. Someone else mentioned very small people - that could also have been a factor. And as another said, just covering all their bases.
Yep. ORMC is the major hospital in the Orlando area and is a Level I Trauma Center, both pedi and adult. And Level I means it's also a teaching hospital affiliated with a medical school -- so I'm sure they had all the right stuff. But there is no substitute for having the right people.

I'll have to say if anyone was "outed" then they are just assuming. I haven't read one article that mention if the deceased was gay unless they were there with a partner or husband. I only know of a minor subset that is outraged over the "outings". If anyone disowns their family in this time of tragedy there are many local friends ready to step up to the plate and pay respects for these individuals.

I read that two of the gentlemen will be burried together. Their family has said they were hoping a wedding would be soon since they were madly in love and had been together for 2 years. Instead they will now plan a joint funereal so they can still be together for eternity.

One of my friends in Orlando is taking it very hard. It seems like a miracle he wasn't there and he lost some very close friends, one he called his little brother.

That is heartbreaking.

Oh my goodness. I haven't been able to read or watch the detailed information like this just yet. This breaks my heart.

 I'm so sorry for this.

I think he likely looked to those groups as inspiration of how to put his hatred, anger and aggression into action. We may never know his true motivations for slaughtering innocent people. I would not be one bit surprised if his issues stem from a deeply personal space that his family will want never to be public knowledge. It will remain to be seen if credible evidence can be produced from outside sources to shed more light on the matter.

The text of the interview is not up yet and I don't remember exactly what they said. I would HOPE that families wouldn't "disown" a child in death over something so inconsequential.

So very, very sad :(.

{{hugs}} to you and your friend.

Lol. I haven't been to one in years. I can't handle hanging with teenagers anymore.

I haven't been to a gay club in over 30 years but Chaps in Boston was my second home. For better or worse, gay culture is SO youth oriented that I began to feel out of place even in my 30s ....and the music was no longer MY music. Having said that, my time at Chaps, being young , gay and out were among the happiest years of my life. But we can't live in the past.

I know there is a lot of talk that he was a regular at the club and on a gay dating app. I wonder if that was him "scouting" or he had self hatred going on with this attack.

I had posted yesterday about an extended family member who was supposed to go to the club with friends Saturday and did not because he was sick. DH checked his cousins' facebook posts last night and his is quiet, but his mother's mentions the fact V was mourning 3 friends and waiting word on others. Apparently one of the guys is a friend he knew from either elementary or middle school here in Michigan and had run into again all these years later with both living in the Orlando area, sadly that friend is one of those who didn't make it. DH's cousin remembered him as a boy way back when and had apparently seen him again just this past winter when she was visiting her son. Her post sounded very shaken at the loss of this young man she watched grow up into a really nice guy and get taken away from his friends and family for nothing at all.
