Greg K. said:With all due respect, you're mistaken. Practicing Catholics should know that the Catholic Church teaches that the faithful are obligated to attend Holy Mass (Eucharistic celebration) on days of obligation. Those who deliberately fail in the obligation of attending Sunday Mass commit a grave sin.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church put is thusly:
"The Sunday Eucharist (meaning "Holy Mass") is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. [Canon Law # 1245] Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin." (C.C.C. # 2181)
At the very least, if the OP feels unable to make it to mass because of the circumstances described, she should ask her pastor for dispensation. She might also explore the various car services that could take her to and from the Queen of the Universe shrine. (It's a beautiful church, by the way!) Her situation is not unusual, and the people at her Disney hotel will be more than happy to help her facilitate transportation.
IMHO, if you're spending a few days of fun in Orlando, you can take an hour or two to let God know how grateful you are for it, and pray for those who are not as blessed.

According to all of my friends that are practicing catholic priests, in good standing with the church, when on a vacation, it is acceptible to skip mass.
I was told, if it becomes a hassel (especially an expensive one, like paying for a shuttle or cab service) then it is okay to take some time out of your Sunday for prayer. They suggest to just put the money you would spend on a cab or shuttle in the collection when you return to your home church. Help the poor and the church as opposed to cabbies or an out of town church.
I figure this makes sense...we usually drive, so its not a problem for us, but I get frustrated with the queen of the universe shrine....I feel like i need binoculars. its so distant and the gift shop..sigh...

I'm also a practicing Catholic. I'll be ordained a permanent deacon in 2007.
