Hi everybody. Since I'm a paronoid germ-o-phobe (:rotfl2: :thumbsup2) I bought DH and I respirator masks (N95) to wear on the plane to florida on tuesday. Has anyone seen people wear these or will I look like a freak? :goodvibes We want to stay flu-free, and are generally healthy people, but we're just taking an extra precaution to protect ourselves. Will we give off a bad impression?

No, haven't seen anyone on any of the flights I have taken lately...:confused3

You will definitely look out of place. never seen one on a plane before.

Will u be wearing it in the theme parks too? Coz they are as germy as the planes.

Germs are everywhere...you cannot avoid them all, not possible. Unless you are getting into a bubble! Wash your hands a lot, use common sense..I took wipes and merely wiped down the airplane seat arms, TV screen etc etc...bout all you can do.

Last week I flew into Baltimore, no masks, no sickness. Just flew home from Tampa tonight with a plane change in Baltimore. Again no masks.
I think if I saw you wearing one I would think you were the one sick and trying not to spread germs. I probably wouldn't sit near you. :rotfl:

More power to you but you will look like a freak. That means you can not eat, drink or talk the whole time you are on the plane.

Haven't seen any on a plane. I did see someone wearing one at a play today.

Editing with some questions...where will you put the mask on? I'm thinking of all the places I encounter a lot of people in the process of travel: security line, line to check bags, shuttle from where my car is parked, etc. Same thing when you get there: baggage claim, ME bus or rental car line, etc. I imagine it's just as likely that the guy next to you on the plane has something as the one checking in your bags or selling you the magazine. Are you planning to keep the mask on in WDW? Lines for food and attactions can be pretty close contact. I guess I just see wearing it on the plane as isolating one of many many places where you could potentially encounter germs. I think of things like the buttons on Mission: Space or the seatbelts on Test Track or any number of rides. A thousand people will have touched them before you. Some of them will be sick. Our plan in WDW and everywhere else is to wash hands frequently, especially before eating and refrain from touching our mouths.

Whatever you decide to do I hope you have a great and healthy trip.

We flew to Greece and back a couple of weeks ago. Several masks on the flight and lots of masks in the airports. My DSs thought it was funny to walk in front of masked people in the airport and fake cough:rotfl:

Our international flight from the USA to Qatar in August was about the same. I don't remember if we saw masks in USA airports, but certainly international ones.

If you feel better wearing a mask, do it. Who cares what others think.

I would think you were sick and would not sit next to you at all. I would also not let you near me and my family. If you tried to tell people you weren't sick I would think you were nuts. Your choice.

I am in the airtrain building 4 times a week (its the place you take the train to the plane) and there are PLENTY of people coming off the planes with masks on--but 99.9 percent of them are oriental coming in on planes from there....don't see to many people on domestic planes. We used to have my godson wear one every time he was on a plane and it was to keep other peoples germs away from him, he had Leukemia and his Dr recommended a mask for the airplane ride, he said planes were like giant incubators for germs.

I flew this week and spent the better part of the day stuck in Atlanta. I saw no one in a mask. Not a single person. I was actually surprised.

I don't think you will see any masks on domestic flights.

I actually did see a woman in a hair salon wearing one (she was the stylist) and she was Asian. Many Asians where them when they are sick with even a cold. It is part of their culture and they were doing that back in the 80s when I lived in Japan.

As for your masks, I read somewhere that the type of mask you bought (the N95) is the most effective for illness but because it's filtration is so tight, they are uncomfortable to wear for more than 10 minutes. Good luck with that!;)

I fly quite often (domestic flights) and I don't see people wearing them either. I'll have to ask my husband (who's a pilot) if he sees people wearing them a lot.

I know when SARS was a concern he said he didn't see people wearing (he flies domestic as well), I'm assuming he doesn't see many people wearing them now either. He flies between 4-6 flights a day 4 days a week and hasn't come down with a cold/flu yet.

In fact if he does get a cold it's usually from me or one of the boys at home when he's been home for a few days, go figure. :confused3

The masks are more for keeping a sick person from spreading he germs than for keeping you from getting sick. If you are not sick they won't help you. I would take them with me in case I ended up next to or in front of someone obviously sick, because trapped on a plane I would try anything, but otherwise I wouldn't pull them out.

Friday when I was at the food Store I saw a woman wearing one who was not sick and thought to myself she was a kook... AND I take this seriously AND I have high risk kids. All I could think it that she is far more likely to get sick from touching a contaminated surface and rubbing her eyes or her lips thoughtlessly then by a cough.

My DH and I flew to Orlando from Minneapolis for a long weekend earlier in the month. There were several passengers scattered throughout both planes with face masks. Other than noticing them, I didn't give it much of a thought.

Are you going to wear them everywhere in the parks? If you're going to WDW, you're going to be exposed to germs from people on the busses, standing in lines, in restaurants, etc... I don't see anything wrong with wearing a mask on the plane, but you're going to be exposed to FAR more germs at WDW than on the planes.

My advice... wear the masks if they make you feel more comfortable. But, in reality, getting lots of rest, taking your vitamins, and eating right are probably more important in terms of fighting illness.

Enjoy your trip!

I'd either think you were overreacting or sick yourself, not wanting to spread your own germs. Do what makes you feel comfortable, though. If it makes you feel safer, it is not hurting anyone. Like PPs have said, though, unless you'll also be wearing them everywhere for the entire trip, it seems pointless.

My MIL wears one every time she gets on a plane because it makes her feel safe. I say go for it, if it makes you feel safe too. I hope you have a great vacation & don't get sick.
