Masks and facial breakouts.

HI Pea-n-Me if I remember correctly and you have not moved we live in same state so I feel like you understand the climate too. Do you use Gold Bond powder or just something like a corn starch based baby powder?
Yes I keep Gold Bond powder in the house and use it sometimes but I haven’t needed it for mask use, as I haven’t had a problem. But if I did, I would give it a try! A little goes a long way.

OP, I’m in the same boat. I have extremely sensitive skin. Masks are killing my skin. I wear a mask in all public places. It wasn’t too bad until I went to work and I’m wearing it for almost 8 hours per day.

If I find anything that works I will post it. I read Visene gets the red out and i tried it today. Have not looked in the mirror yet but using Finacea stings and with the breakouts hurting already I am looking for a more comfortable alternative.

Are you using paper masks? I thought I read that paper mask have thin layer of latex in them somewhere so if you have a latex allergy you may be having a reaction to the mask itself.
:scratchin Exactly one week into our mandatory mask by-law and I'm broken out like a junior-high boy. The masks I use are the blue disposables which are provided by my workplace as PPE. While I have worn one periodically as required over the past 4 months, I've easily quadrupled my time in one over the past week. My skin in general is very sensitive to "change" (any new product or variation in my cleansing/make-up routine) and I'm hoping it will just adapt but now you've got me curious if there's actually something in them that's bugging me. The box says they are made of polypropylene.

Yesterday I went and got Milk of Magnesia and put it on the breakouts. It seemed to dry it up but that is not proactive and I want something proactive( not the brand). I also got Aveeno calming. I know that people recommended the one for eczema but I went to both Walmart and Walgreens and they had nothing. As for mask type as I said I have tried them all cotton, disposable, and silk I do not think it makes a difference. Seriously someone out there is creating a medicated mask that will prevent this problem. They have to be.

A month or so ago I decided to try wipes for make-up removal. Like everything else "new", the Aveeno Calming ones broke me out. I'm using my DS's Clearasil right now because it works as well as anything but the one thing I won't be doing is trying a whole bunch of different things. That's the road to ruin for my skin. I'm just going to keep my routine super-constant (including the type of mask) and hope it resolves. :(

I have rosacea and perioral dermatitis that has been aggravated by masks as well. These products were recommended by my derm and work VERY well at reducing flares and clearing them up.

I use Dove Sensitive Beauty bar or Garnier micellar water to cleanse. Nothing else. I use Ole Henriksen Sheer Transforming Perfecting Moisturizer along with their Truth Serum (Vit C).

I use a retinol daily at night (Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Serum--a low enough concentration to not aggravate my skin). I use Eucerin Redness Relief night cream over it.

STOP using Salicylic Acid and tea tree oil. These are too drying for acne rosacea skin.

Can you wear a cloth mask? I tried the blue disposables, but it turns out that I'm allergic/sensitive to something in them. Most likely culprit is latex (some/many of the blue masks contain latex), but I may be reacting to other chemicals in the masks, too. I've found that 100% cotton masks work best, especially if I change the masks often and wash them after each wearing. I wash them with an unscented, sensitive skin detergent, rinse twice (on the sensitive skin cycle) with white vinegar to remove soap residue, and air dry. No makeup or sunscreen under the mask! Use the most gentle cleanser that works for you -- I use Dove sensitive skin or Cetaphil. Hope you find something that helps soon!

I have all cotton ones too. I am doing a teleheath with my derm doctor this morning. I do not expect much in the way of help because when I called his NP said they were getting tons of calls from patients that were struggling with this and she did not sound hopeful. I keep looking on the internet to see if there are any masks for sensitive skin. It is all just so depressing and I want to stomp my feet and just say "make it stop". Which is a very mature and sensible reaction LOL.

Totally get it. Stomping of feet is a normal reaction to any acne outbreak, I think. I've really found that the better quality fabric/cotton fiber gives me less reaction. And thoroughly washing/rinsing them to make sure there is no residue of any kind on them before wearing is an absolute must! Also, changing the masks often -- as often as once an hour during hot, humid weather -- I keep a bag of spares in my purse and change to a fresh mask whenever I feel my skin start to get sensitive. It's not necessarily convenient, but I'll take it over breaking out in a rash.

I have found that using a face primer even while I still wear no makeup has made my mask not feel like it sticks to my face as much.. In a pitch I have mixed monistat chafing gel with my moisturizer to do the same thing when I have ran low on primer.

Honestly, I can’t even think about wearing a cloth one. The idea of a damp, grody piece of fabric on my face skeeves me right out. I know it’s just a mental block but I’ll have to stick with disposables, at least for now.

If it helps at all, I've never had a "damp, grody" cloth mask on my face EVER. I always carry a bag of clean spares in my purse. My mask gets changed to a fresh, clean, dry one as soon as the one I'm wearing starts feeling irritating in any way. So I always have a fresh, clean mask on and others available and ready to use at any time. It really does make a difference. Even just the smell of a clean, fresh mask as I put it on -- very calming. The used masks go in the "dirty" bag and get put in the wash after each wearing.
ETA: Now DH does this, too -- just not as often as I do -- but he really likes having clean, fresh masks available and ready to go. I may have created a monster... :)

Yes, I wear a cloth mask. A friend was nice enough to give us a big bag of them so we have plenty. And I’ve been wearing one while out and about I think since April. Never even once has it been wet or slimy! :crazy2: The only thing I’ve gotten on them a bit is my lipstick, lol. But no nastiness, even in the heat! I wear a mask at work, too, for about 13 hrs, and it doesn’t get nasty, either! I have never had to change it out. (The only time I had to change out an N95 was when the strap broke. So even in hot rooms with full PPE on.)

Talked to my derm doc this morning. He gave me a few pointers he recommended Cera-v but he swears by this. He also said there are lightweight surgical masks that look almost white and those are the best ones to get. He was not sure of the name because he does not buy them but he said he saw them at Home Depot...go figure! He also said as someone else on there said that the salicylic acid might be the problem too bc it can irritate. Go figure.
