Mask Confusion Already

The CDC director said that the unvaccinated should wear masks to protect *themselves*. If an unvaccinated person doesn't care to protect him or herself, then I feel like that is up to them. Also, these are guidelines, not laws, at least at the federal level.

Also, I find it interesting that they never mention those with natural immunity from having recovered from covid. I know "they" say that the immunity is better from the vaccine, but "they" also said don't wear masks at first to save the masks for those in health care. In the early 20th century, "they" also said that formula was better than breast milk because they wanted women to go to work in factories. So the powers that be are certainly not above perpetuating a falsehood when there is a behavior/outcome they desire, even if with good intentions (like saving the masks).

um, yea. The original topic was a poster was pointing out that a 12 year old boy was seriously affected by Covid. I was simply saying a single incidence (generally) doesn't prove a trend or something to react to.

No. My point was do you really want to be that parent who has that one child who is seriously affected my COVID?

Maybe my view is jaded because I know someone who lost their 6 year old to chicken pox because they felt the vaccine wasn't needed because "it's just chicken pox".

There have been several children who've had complications and if I were a parent I would do anything to make sure my child was not one of those.

Some of us don’t want the vaccine nor do we believe in it
Good thing there are others who do so we can all get out from this mess together. Which is happening in the area I live. The risks have been reduced tremendously. The collective relief from burden is palpable. Seriously.

Yesterday DH was waiting out in the parking lot for a Dr appointment in Mahwah NJ when a lady walked up to his open window. She said her son had the same exact truck in every way. Then she started tearing up. She lost that 38yo son to Covid and he left behind a 10yo daughter. They talked for a while and cried a bit together. Turned out her son’s name is the same as DH. The last thing she said walking away was make sure the people you love get vaccinated. It came too late to give her son a chance but now we have more choice in our fate than to just let the cards fall where they may. Much of the severe illness and death going forward will be unnecessary. Doesn’t have to happen if more people can be protected and barely any virus floating around.

Which brings to mind the debate early on in the the pandemic on whether masks were to protect the wearer, or to protect others around them.

I'm not saying one does anymore than the other. They both do. People have learned to accept one as a societal norm, the other is a debatable topic.
And this attitude right here is why I think the US will never hit herd immunity, and why we are going to get hit with another big wave of infections. I just pray that it doesn't allow the virus to mutate further.

It's definitely mutating in India. And Boris Johnson, the UK PM, is worried about having to shutdown again. I'm hoping to get a booster when I get my flu shot.

There will always be outliers. Yes, it's terrible for them and their families and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But, it's illogical to say "Look at this one kid over here! See what happened to him! We still need to take extended steps to make sure nothing like this happens to anyone else!"
Haven't we spent more than a year saying "Look at this 0.08% of the people over here..."

Waited for what? Everyone 16+ has had access to the vaccine long enough to be fully vaccinated or very close to it at this point. The under 16 crowd has never been the issue. It has always been about adults spreading the virus, getting very ill and becoming hospitalized. If the vast majority of adults are vaccinated, unvaccinated kids should not be a point of concern. Community spread and death rates should be next to nil if adults do their part.
One thing I’ve learned from Covid is that weeks can make a huge difference. Biden set a goal for the Fourth of July to have 70% of Americans have their first shot. We are just over half of adults being fully vaccinated and only just now got approved for 12 and over. When I say wait I meant give it a month to work at least get many of those 12 and over vaccinated and more adults. We are talking many millions and That can make a huge difference

None of those are "can't breathe" except possibly the hyperventilating. Find ones that fit better. Use allergy meds. Swap them out when they get wet. There are ways to deal with this.

That’s one of the stupidest things I’ve read. Someone shouldn’t have to “deal with” something that is no longer necessary. If you want to keep wearing one, more power to you. If you think a cloth mask is only effective if everyone is wearing one, then get yourself something better like an N95. Don’t tell someone ELSE to find a better fitting mask to be comfortable. Get one for yourself.

I’m assuming you’re not dead since you’re posting. Does that mean you’ve never worn a mask or that you actually can breath when wearing one?
I wear one into my building at work, and shed it when i get to my office. Maye 10% of my time at work is spent with one. Outside of work...no i do not wear one

Of course I don't. But just because my child (hypothetically) is seriously affected by covid doesn't mean I think everyone should have to hunker down in their houses for "two weeks". Does no one else remember "this is not a serious disease for children"? How often was that repeated? Now it is?

One of the stupidest things I've read is someone saying "I can't breath in a mask." So, for that to be true, either a) they've never worn a mask for longer than 30 seconds or so or b) they're dead. I didn't read the post you're quoting as saying others must continue to wear masks.

I also get tired of people telling me what my reaction to wearing the mask is. Yes, can't breathe. Hyperventilating, coughing, sneezing, nose running, and just in general wearing something all day that is drenched in sweat. It's great that you have no problems with it, stop telling me how my reaction is.
What activity are you doing with that mask?

I mentioned in another thread that most of the businesses around me have switched to either maintaining the requirement or requesting since our mask mandate in the county was allowed to expire at the end of April. I haven't been out since the CDC's updated guidance which my governor announced she would be following so I don't know if that will rapidly or gradually change.

For me I just see it as easier to continue to wear masks in places that were covered by mandates like restaurants and retail. I'll likely do this until I see a significant amount of the places I patronize remove any traces of any signs. I fully support people who don't want to patronize a place that has a requirement they don't like. That's always been okay to me long before the pandemic but like others mentioned just respect their decision to do it, regardless of whether they are going to kick you out, or even approach you.

For the longest time there were people supported who business' rights in determining things for themselves such as when they can and cannot be open, how long they can be open for, their occupancy limits, and more. If that was you (and I include myself in this), then support them in this as well if they want to maintain masks or request you wear masks, respect that it's their choice (if they are without a mandate covering it most especially). If you have a favorite business that was impacted by a closure or occupancy limit or whatever and you supported them throughout all of this if they have a mask request or requirement support them in this as well. Vaccinated or not.

HOW ABOUT THIS.....I cannot breathe as well in a mask, or my body, my choice.

I didn’t ask you?

Except a piece of cloth sitting over your mouth and nose is not causing all those issues listed so they are either lying or incredibly dramatic because they didn't like the idea of masks to begin with.

What business is that of yours? No one needs to explain why they no longer want to wear a mask and are THRILLED to be rid of them when the CDC itself is saying it’s okay.

I spent months getting migraines every time I wore a mask even to someplace as simple and short as the grocery store. Finally found some thin enough that they didn’t have that effect - and probably also didn’t have much of a mitigating effect.

I wore masks from the beginning. I distanced, sterilized, etc.. I urged others to do the same. I got the vaccine even though I don’t think it’s had enough long-term testing. I have followed pretty much ALL of the science. Yet being happy to see things loosening up suddenly puts me in the careless, covid-denier, fanatic camp??

I knew that everyone would be all “follow the science!!eleventy!” Until the science started going against what they personally believe. Sad. Just sad.
