In the end of August, the world of comics was rocked when news broke out that Walt Disney Co. had purchased Marvel Entertainment for a reported 4 billion dollars. Ever since then, the fans have had mixed feelings on the subject. On one side, this could mean global exposure for the big company that brought us famed characters such as Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, among others. But, a great portion of the fans felt, and still do, that Disney would step in and change the content and dark characteristics of these iconic figures.

Not much has been announced by either Marvel or Disney ever since then. But no one has forgotten about it. The fans are continuously debating over this on websites and message boards around the internet. Some of these arguments can get nasty, as well. One thing you can’t fault these fans for is their commitment to their favourite characters and titles.

Perhaps these heated debates would be eased by some form of announcement by either of these companies, who have remained relatively quiet on the subject for the last 3 months. Probably the only news that has made its way to the public was that Sony Pictures returned the television rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel. Aside from that, nothing has been mentioned on the Disney/Marvel partnership.

Now that we know what the fans’ reactions to this are, it’s time to learn what the shareholders’ think about the acquisition. Yahoo! Finance reports that on December 31st, 2009, Marvel Entertainment will hold a meeting in New York City. What is the purpose of this meeting to be held on New Year’s Eve? These shareholders will gather together to have a vote. It will be a vote that will determine what’s next for Marvel Entertainment on the subject of Walt Disney Co.’s takeover.

This brings to light the fact that the acquisition might not be entirely complete yet. As are many big business purchases, it is not a one-shot deal, but rather a long process. The stockholders on record as of November 23rd, 2009, will be able to attend the meeting and have a say. Marvel says that if the majority of the votes are in favour of the purchase, then the deal will be closed and contractually official. What would happen if the majority is against this? A very interesting question to ask on January 1st, 2010.

Nobody can question the impact this deal can have on Marvel, as well as the comic book industry. Whether it’s a positive one or a negative one, Walt Disney Co.’s purchase of Marvel Entertainment will help change things. Let’s hope that if this deal is made official, things can go, to quote Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, “To infinity and beyond.” I apologize, I had to slide that one in.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on the side you choose, the majority of investors that own stock are not necessarily pationate about the products the company makes, rather the industry and overall returns it produces, emotions have minimal play.
