I disembarked the Magic this past Friday after a MARVELous 5 day cruise including Marvel Day at Sea. As I was eager for details before I left, I figured I would pass on my thoughts and experiences on that special day.

- If you're booked on a sailing with MDAS and are NOT a comic book fan, do not worry. Other than a standee in the atrium, there are no more references to Marvel than on a usual sailing (i.e. movies in theatre). On the designated day, most activities were concentrated in the atrium and some of the lounges. Animated Marvel shows were played on Funnelvision, and Marvel movies played all day in the theatre. Doctor Strange's stage show for the kiddos (similar to Jedi Training Academy) is the production in the main theatre in place of a normal stage show.

- There are 2 ticketed character meet & greets: NY Heroes and Groot. You meet Spider-man, Black Panther, and Iron Man (or at least on our sailing) in the NY Heroes meet. Groot was awesome and we got mostly great photos with nearly all of them. I wish they had done this for ALL of the characters, as the lines for Loki, Thor, Black Widow, and Captain America were almost an hour long each early in the day. All of the characters did a great job spending time with you; the ticketed meets went faster due to less people. Had there been room on the comment card, I would have suggested each passenger get tickets for a designated meet time for all of the Marvel characters. Some, like Doctor Strange, Hawkeye, and Starlord & Gamora were walk-around characters in the halls of the atrium.

- Some of the other events that day were trivia-based (study up before you go), drawing lessons (by a poor CM who clearly isn't a comic artist), a costume showcase, and a presentation by a real Marvel artist. My sailing had Todd Nauck, who did a live drawing of Spider-man as he answered questions. Awesome! The Doctor Strange Journey into the Mystic Arts stage show was a DS version of Jedi Academy. Still, it was well done with a lot of special effects ... DS is my favorite, so it was a must-see.

- The special menu in the dining rooms that night was delicious. I ended up with the soba noodle bowl and if I could have licked it clean, I would have. There were a lot of options on this menu. There were lots of themed adult beverages and a couple for-sale cup options for kids/adults.

- The absolute highlight of the cruise was the superhero deck show. Literally every character on the ship was featured, with pyrotechnics and fireworks! Even in a heavy wind, characters climbed up and jumped down from the funnels. Fireworks made it seem like Iron Man was battling off the side of the ship. Kids thought that Hyrdra was literally crawling around them. The finale had the Guardians of the Galaxy show up, with Groot leading us in his signature dance moves as the show ended.

- Mickey and friends meet during the later half of the day wearing outfits inspired by their "favorite" superheroes: Mickey had Capt. America, Minnie had Spider-man(girl), Daisy had Black Widow, Donald had the Hulk, Goofy had Iron Man, and poor Pluto was stuck with an Avengers-logo bandana. The dog-hero options in the Marvel universe are too obscure still for Disney to decide to give him an outfit inspired by them. There is a kid-centered deck show before the 2nd dining time staring them but I saw a shortened version of it due to rain.

- You get 1 Marvel-themed goodie in your stateroom in the afternoon: a logo banner. Guests were using it to have characters sign throughout the day. Most folks got Thor's hammer as their towel "animal".

That's all I can think of for now. I'll be happy to answer questions. There were no kids with me, so I'm sorry in advance for having no answers that are kid-specific.

This was the experience last fall also. Loved MDAS!!

I wanted to add one more experience. For the adults on Marvel day there is a Ravager's Ball at night. Great Awesome Mix music and Starlord, Gamora and some of the Ravagers come to the party. (Gamora doesn't dance!)

I love Todd Nauck! Had no idea they'd have actual artists on board.

LoL that's great, Gamora doesn't dance. I'm glad they keep character.

I can't wait till my kiddies are a little bit older so we can watch the movies and do a Marvel cruise.

Thank you for the review.

This is awesome. Thanks! We're booked on 1/20/19 which is a 5day MDAS. Do you happen to have the Navigators? I've been watching for them on the DCL Blog.

I definitely have the one from MDAS, not sure about the other days. I’ll try to get a picture posted later.

Thanks for posting this. We just got off a Star Wars Day at Sea cruise two weeks ago and since I booked a placeholder I am eager to book another cruise. Since we did SWDAS for my husband and older son I thought a MDAS cruise for my younger son would be a good fit since he is obsessed with superheroes.

What were the nightly shows and which nights were they on? Also was DS show scary or filled with magic? TIA

We enjoyed the Doctor Strange show and did not think it was scary. A number of kids participated, some looked to be as young as 4 or 5, and they didn't appear to be scared either. Here's a video of the show

How do they pick the kids who get to participate in the show? Any tips for our kids to get picked?

We did not have kids with us, but I would guess arriving early and sitting close to the front would help. They offered it 3 times on our Marvel Day and choose about 20 kids for the show we went to, so there are several opportunities.

The Jedi Academy is suddenly invaded by bad guys and the kids have to help fight them off. Did that happen with the Doctor Strange one?

Oh drat. I was hoping they handled that the same way they do Jedi now and treat it as a ticketed event. Very sad when your child is super looking forward to participating and doesn't get picked.

That said, great review and full of helpful information. Excited about our cruise a year from now.

Nope, nothing goes wrong. No one touches anything they shouldn't, and Doctor Strange's adult apprentices definitely don't open a portal to the Dark Dimension by accident. It's all entirely by the book and everything goes 100% according to plan. :stitch2:

In all seriousness, I wouldn't say there's "fighting" like in Jedi Academy. The kids do have to help save everyone with the magic they've learned, though.

Thank you for sharing about your trip! My husband and I have started to plan a Disney cruise trip for early next year and I do have a few questions. I am assuming based on the timing of your post that you all sailed in January. How was the weather? Were you all able to have water fun on the ship and at the destinations you visited?

My son will be 5 in September and he loves superheroes! He would LOVE the MDAS, so we are interested in the Marvel cruise. The concern I have is that I also have a daughter who will be 3 at the end of February. Did the Marvel cruise have other Disney characters and experiences, such as Mickey Mouse and princesses? I'd love to book her in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for a princess makeover, but was wondering if all the makeovers will be for superheroes on this cruise?

I appreciate all your help!

There were no superhero makeovers. Apart from the single Marvel Day at Sea, it's a typical Disney cruise. There was still the Royal Tea. There was still the Princess Gathering. BBB did the usual princess makeover days except for on Pirate Day, as usual.

Thanks for the information! I am so excited that the Marvel cruise will be fun for her too!
