I just realized the period when we plan to go to WDW is over the MLK holiday in January. We'll be there from Thursday to Wednesday, with MLK day being the Monday we're there. Is that a heavy attendance time?

Would room discounts be harder to come by? Will the parks be crowded to the point that it wouldn't be as though we were in the off season?

Yes, that's a very busy weekend, historically speaking.

There are usually discount room only codes for that time but I remember this past year hearing that weekend was very crowded.

That being said, it shouldn't deter you from going, just get up super early and go to the parks of your choice.

As far as discounts go, they still consider that weekend to be value season. I haven't been that weekend either. I do know from previous posts that it is considerably busier than the rest of the month (w/ the exception of New Year's of course). I don't think you'll expierence crowds quite like Easter or Christmas. However, it will probably feel more like a regular season than a value season during the actual weekend.

I've never been during any peak times, but have been many other times. We really didn't think the crowds were too bad. January is usually a quiet month and the weather can be tricky. If it's too cold, there won't be as many locals visiting so I wouldn't worry too much about overcrowding.

We got room only discount rates and stayed at Pop Century. It was sold out that weekend because of the newness and value of the resort, but we never found it to be "crowded".

That being said, I say go for it!!! :teeth:

So far this year, we've been on MLK Weekend, the first weekend in Feb (cheerleader invasion), the second half of Presidents' Week, and the first weekend of the Spring Break season.

The MLK Weekend was the most tolerable, crowd-wise. It's crowded by January standards, but it's not too bad.

We were ther Jan 2003 and the crowds were not that bad. we avoided the MK the whole weekend. waited until Wed. to go there and there were hardly any lines by then. We went to MGM on MLK monday and thought it was crowded, we still were able to do everything we wanted and more. All in all, I think you will be okay. We used an AP rate at the Wl for the entire trip. Have fun!

WE've been there the past two years. This year was more crowded than last. We spent MLK day at AK because we figured it would be the quietest. Crowds thinned out on Wed.

I would do MLK week over the summer any day!

We were there this year from Wednesday to Wednesday with MLK weekend in between. It is somewhat more crowded but not bad. We went to MK Tuesday after the holiday and the place was really packed! We went to MK the Thursday before and it was just wonderful - low crowds and jumping on rides! However the weather was really nippy this year, and it rained a few mornings. We also spent MLK day at AK.

All and all - very doable. Nothing compared to Christmas week or other busy times!

We were there that weekend! We arrived the Thursday before, and MGM was empty! I swear we had the whole place to ourselves! As each day went on, it was more and more crowded, but NEVER to the intensity, not even half, that Easter and summer crowds can be. After our MK extended weekend I decided we should always try to make that into our five day weekend at Disney. It was great and very uncrowded!

Thank you all so much! What nice responses.

Sounds like if we plan, we can avoid the worst of the crowds. And, I guess, a crowded day at WDW is better than any day at home.:D
