They just came on the news that Martha has been sentenced to 5 months in a federal prision, 5 months of house arrest and 2 years of probation. She will also pay $30,400 fine. Her house arrest will take place at her Bedford compound. She will have to wear an electronic monitoring device.

When does fed time begin, immediately, or does she have time to get her affairs in order?

It's a good thing.

I couldn't resist. I really don't think she should have gotten anytime, really, She is being made an example of in my opinion.

I agree with Microcell.

But at least its not 10 months federal prison!

This should be much easier for her.

what about all these other corporate scandals those people arent going to jail
Which scandals are you talking about? Most of the people involved in the big scandals I have heard about are either in jail or looking at a down the barrel of serious jail time if convicted. One of the Enron guys just got several years in jail.

I thought a bunch of them got off on a mistrial the guy with the expensive shower curtain. AS for the enron people some of them have gone to jail but not all of the big players
I believe someones wife went to jail the other a day but i havent seen much of the main main player slike that ken lay guy go to jail yeah hes going on trial but whats taking so long they certainly got martha trial up and running right away

Investors like the sentence. Her company's stock is up 32%

The husband you are talking about (his name is Andrew Fastow, her's is Lea Fastow) about got 10 years and will begin his sentence after testifying against Ken Lay. The hold up on the Ken Lay trial was actually the afore mentioned husband and wife. They have agreed to testify against Lay, but would not do so until their plea bargains were worked out. Word is that the Ken Lay case is pretty much open and shut with their testomony and that he is likely going to jail for a long time.

I am glad she is serving some prison time. I am sick of people hindering investigations with lying. Other peopel do go to prison for this crime. She is not being made an example of. She is just very visable.

If she is smart, her first stop after gaining her fredom would be to Saturday Night Live to make fun of herself. Then in some interview (say on 20/20) nonchalantly mention that it was her lying that caused the problem. I think only then can she re-emerge as a successful/respected businesswoman.

She blames everyone else for the problems. If she had just told the truth, she (and her employees) would be back to business as usual.

Will she really have to serve the time, because she is appealing? How does that work?

Tragedy serving a sentence at a home grand enough to be called a compound. It will be rough on her I tell you....what with probably only a couple of pools, maybe only a single horse, who knows how few gardens she'll be able to tend within the allowed boundries of the estate. She'll have to send her butler out to purchase the items she'll need to prepare items for parties.

The woman had already hired a "staff" for her service at the women's prison she was expected to be sentenced to.

It is generally agreed that Martha is not a nice woman.

But that's not the point.

She was convicted of lying to federal officials. Not insider trading. She was not even under oath.

I seem to remember another somewhat prominent person who also lied, but under oath to the federal Grand Jury. He got no jail time, but his law license in Arkansas was suspended -- like he was really gonna practice law in Arkansas again . . .

Where is the justice here? Why two very different outcomes?

I like Martha Stewart's product. She employs alot of people. What she seems to forget is how she affects those people, their families, and their jobs!

One person's lie is another person's loyality. It's called 'denial'.

She free for now while she pursues an appeal (of the conviction, I think). If the appeal is denied (the conviction stands), then she'd most likely be given a specific date to surrender to authorities at "Club Fed." Normally, people are given a few weeks or a month to get their personal affairs in order before they have to report.

I will now remember only to tell the truth if I am questioned under oath. So what should the punishment be for lying to federal officials and hindering an investigation? Should it be ok to lie to federal officials during an investigation of insider trading, but not ok in the case of a violent crime? What is the cut off?

Martha thought she was above the law and showed a lack of respect for the law. Her lies caused her predicament. Not the investigators.

Did I miss something? I thought it was Federal prison. It was a Federal Judge that made the sentence in a Federal court.
