When I return 'normal' purchases from Marshalls with a receipt or without (within normal time range) I have no problem whatsover.

But I just received a belated birthday present in the mail from my out of town Aunt (and Uncle). My Aunt means well, and I adore her. But she buys things, forgets where she puts them, and we sometimes receive them months or years later. There's nothing 'wrong' with her other than being a little scattered brained - in an endearing way usually. :) Except with gifts. :confused3

Anyway, back to my gift. She gave me a shirt and pants, both too small. The tags are attached with prices scratched off. I would really like to return them but hate to attempt a return to find out it's dreadfully out of date. This happened before and I donated it. Since then she got a bit better, but who's to know? LOL I can always donate them but if she got them recently, I'd love to get something in their place.

And no, I won't ask for the receipt. She probably wouldn't know where it is, and she would also be hurt.

Is there any way to tell the date or season or year sold by reading the tag?

TIA :goodvibes

Why don't you just check your local Marshalls and see if the same item is available for sale?

Tags are attached. Why not go to customer service and tell the truth. I just received this as a gift. The size is wrong. I have no idea when it was bought. Can I exchange it for the right size.

Well of course, that is what I always do with every other gift that needs to be returned without a reciept.

I must not have been specific enough in my original post.

In the past I've tried to return her gifts - either for myself or one of our kids - from Kohls and Macy's. (We all know how easy Kohls' returns are.)

Both times, the items were over a year old and basically worthless without a receipt. It was a little embarrassing. Hence my question regarding tags; I would like to avoid the same scenario.

I don't think you have anything to be embarrassed about. You will go in and be polite, explain the items are a gift and you have no idea when they were purchased and ask if they can be exchanged. If they say no, we say thanks and leave. You have done absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about :-)

I can't be of any help as far as determining if there is a season/year printed on the tag, but I would just go in and explain that it was a gift but you aren't sure if it can be returned for store credit. I wouldn't be embarrassed.

Hi mafibisha -
I work for TJX in Sales Audit and as the PPs have suggested, take the items to your local Marshalls and have them scan them. Also explain that they were gifts from your out-of-state Aunt so there are no receipts. They will do the best they can to help you out. Also you can try calling Customer Service if the store can't help you out. Best case is they'll issue you a gc for the amount - worse case is you have to donate them.

Good luck!

I would not be embarrassed at all.
I worked retail in college and when someone would come in with your scenario, I would feel bad for them if they could not return it.
We got a lot of rude demanding bozos and people like you were a blessing.

Since I work for the company if the tags are attached to the item they will return it for that price. This is a company wide program so you should have no problem. The price is at the top of the tag and in the barcode. Don't worry we are here for the customer :)
