I got a call yesterday that friends recommended us to Marriott. They offered me a 3 night vacation for $298 in a unit in a lot of choices of places. I need to attend a 90 minute presentation but they said it is like Disney-no pressure. I own 490 Points through Disney and don't want another time share but I could use a small getaway with just my husband. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have no experience, and I could never do this because I think I would cave and buy something just because I get very excited about things in the moment....BUT.....I have a co-worker who has done this type of thing a few times and just says no no no and has a great weekend....go for it!!

this is true less often now than it used to be.

if you've got so much vacation that you can afford to throw away a couple of hours, then give it a shot. i wouldn't waste my time.

For that price, it is worth listening to a 90 minute sales pitch.

Of course, I am partial to Marriott being an owner and ended up buying in Aruba about 8 years ago after listening to that same sales pitch.

We did the Hilton Grand Vacation Club tour a few years ago and got three nights at the Doubletree for about $199, plus tickets to SeaWorld. And then moved over to our DVC resort after those three nights. It was low pressure and when we told them we already owned DVC and were just interested in finding out about HGVC, they gave us our tickets and sent us on our way.

I get these offers all the time through my Hilton Honor's membeship.

We did the Hilton tour as well. It was very high pressure.

One caution, we tried to change the hotel stay and only stay 2 nights instead of 3. Hilton said if we did not use the room, we had to pay for the night. We actually had to go back to the hotel, mess thing sup and check out in person to not get charged...

I would not say it was a pleasent experience. Oviously Marriot and Hilton are better of you want to travel all over. IMHO...If you love Disney, DVC is the way to go.

We are dvc members since 1994, but in 2006 we did Marriot Grand Vista deal. We had 1 bed for 4 nights for $299. First of all, we hated the resort, they gave us a room that was under construction, etc, but the 90 minute presentation was very low pressure, we told them up front that we had dvc and it was a painless process. This has been the only timeshare presentation deal we have done since we purchased dvc and were a bit nervous, but it was worth the free wdw passes and the 90-minutes. From what I've heard, this is not the case in most of these deals.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I'll pass. It's not worth the aggravation. It sounds like some people get salespeople that are more pushy than others and I just don't want to take a chance. I can't afford to buy another timeshare and am happy with me so I think I'll pass.

We did that one a couple years ago, and got to stay in a FABULOUS Marriott timeshare- Newport Coast Villas in Newport Beach, CA. We absolutely loved it. However, at the time DH was traveling a lot for work so he had tons of Hilton points to use. The presentation was literally NO pressure- we were done in 30 minutes- less pressure than Disney. We explained why the hotel points worked better for us at the moment, he said makes sense, enjoy your stay. :thumbsup2 If I had $25,000 at the time to drop on the Marriott timeshare there, I would have bought.

But now it's a few years later, and DH isn't traveling as much as he used to, so DVC entered our minds after our Port Orleans Riverside stay. We really wanted the room DVC could offer us. We tended to use the Hilton points for suites, and found it hard to go back to regular hotel rooms.

If the Marriott timeshare you could stay in on the "offer" is a really nice one, I'd go for it. It's a cheap trip and I was very impressed with their quality. I've sat in on a Hilton timeshare presentation as well as that horrible Tahiti Village in Las Vegas- awful high pressure things- and Marriott was totally different.

I've never known of Marriott being truly high pressure, maybe compared to DVC, but not to the real world. But they are going to attempt to sell you if you tour, as they should. For the right situation these incentive tours can be a great option. It's also an opportunity to learn about other timeshares.

My sister is vacationing there right now and said it's lovely. I miss the days when we could have done an exchange through II with DVC; RCI just doesn't cut it for me.

I would think it would depend at which Marriott you went to. I stayed at this Newport Beach Marriott and it was GORGEOUS and I would say this one is worth the $ for a 90 min presentation.:flower3:

I have been looking lately at a Marrott timeshare, but to this point have been leary of spending many thousands of dollars for something I dont know enough about! If the price was right, and it seems to be, i would say go for it! If you know your not going to buy, be firm and dont cave...

How do you get offered one of these tours? I would love a getaway with my dh!

Often you can contact Marriott directly but the best way is to get a member to recommend you to Marriott, not unlikely some of the specials DVC has offered. Given I haven't done it, I'm not sure the exact details. You might look on the Timeshare Users Group for further information.

We had the opportunity to do this a few years back and had a wonderful experience. No pressure. We decided to by a timeshare about a year later insteading on investing further in DVC. We love both!

My inlaws have a Marriott Timeshare, and we've been to Marriott Grand Vista for the past five years. We went to one of the timeshare presentations only to get the WDW passes, and it was horrible! We had Michael, the manager, and he was so high-pressure! He kept telling us, "You owe it to your family to have a nice vacation." My husband's reply was, "No. We owe it to them to save for college." It was crazy! We finally told him we had no interested, but he still persisted. It was not worth it!

Just remember that is you were to buy that the resale value would likely be 10-40% of what you paid the next day.

That's a little exagerated for Marriott but any new purchase is certainly worth less than you pay retail. For prime seasons I'd say more in the 40-70% range, for off seasons maybe 30-60% of retail value. For DVC it can be as low as 50-60% and as high as 80% or so depending on the resort and package sizes. Certainly resale is the way to go for both if you can get what you want for a savings. Think of it like a new car. I own 9 Marriott weeks and of those, only 1 was retail and it was one of my later purchases. However, I got other benefits attached to my resale weeks that I did not have prior. Same for DVC, of the 8 contracts, I've owned, 4 were resale, the 4 retail were actually one purchase of 4*25 so one might count them as one in this context.

We were offered 5 nights in Kauai for $598 after our 2008 trade into Marriott Waiohia and used it last Feb. Had a wonderful stay at the Kauai Beach Club and no the sales pitch wasn't hard sell. They figured out we were too far into DVC pretty fast.
