Marriage: The Trip Report - Update 2/28 - Final Thoughts & Link to Disneyland TR!

Thank you for your words MeMom! (you really are like my DISMom at times!) It is true that everyone is different. Finding that exact balance is the trick. I really enjoyed my first year at home, but this year has been much harder as Henry has grown older. I still enjoy most days, but also struggle myself more often. I am definitely ready for some sort of work.

Henry going into school is one of the major reasons I have been looking at the TA work. I know it will be a lot of work, but also provide some flexibility, so hopefully I can be involved some with his class. That's important to me too.

Well, shucks, that's sweet. You have a hillbilly 'ma'!
And I get a cute little honorary red-headed grandson!
I'll have to tell my two little blonde grandgirlies. :thumbsup2
Bella will love having 'Henny' as a part of the family. :goodvibes

I hope you get to be a part of many of Henry's school activities. Field trips and parties with the kids are among our favorite memories.

Keep us posted on the travel agent fun. I suppose many of us have considered this. I know I have - more than once. I don't know how much time I would have to spend on the phone, though, making ADR's and such, with a full-time job. I wouldn't be able to make any calls after 7:30 in the morning, and in the evening, I am wiped out. I do love helping people plan on a casual basis, though. One of our school secretaries is on her way there now. She's spending only one day at MK, but it was fun to help her map out her strategy and give her a printout of places to eat and prices from allears. She was floating on air yesterday. :wizard:

Well, I have been meaning to get back here and share my news for a couple days now - and to post an update that I meant to do several days ago - but the evenings keep slipping away on me!

However, as many of you have heard and read on Facebook I AM now a Travel Agent! I am beyond thrilled and have been so excited getting started. I have a to-do list a mile long, but it's all so enjoyable. I am also really enjoying the agency that brought me on, it's a great group of people who are very helpful!

A huuuuuuuuuuuge thank you goes out to my fellow TAs who have encouraged me and answered all my questions along this journey. And thank you to everyone for your encouragement and kind words!

I am currently going through the College of Disney Knowledge - it's a lot of fun and very interesting and helpful, and it's been taking up all my free time lately. :goodvibes I have a few more courses to go and then I'll get my graduation ears!

I'm sure most of you have heard but there are new itineraries out for 2012 for Disney Cruise Line and it includes sailings out of NYC! I gotta tell you I did a JIG when I read that! Booking opens tomorrow morning at 8:00 am (eastern) and I'll be ready to book! Joe and I had discussed a few options, and at first were going to do a 5-night to Canada; however, we truly want our first cruise to be tropical...so we are doing the 8-night Bahamian! I gotta admit, there was a bit of Fuzzy Disney Math:teacher: in there to make it seem like the right choice. :rolleyes1 The schedule is 2 days at sea, Nassau, Castaway Cay, Port Canaveral where we get on a bus and get a 1 day Park Hopper to WDW, then back to the ship for 2 more days at sea before returning to New York. Sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it? Cruise + 1 day at WDW and no airfare!

And...if we are able to book on the June 2 cruise, and if we are reading the schedule correctly, I'll be celebrating my 32nd birthday on Castaway Cay!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow - Friday, oh how I love thee...tomorrow afternoon while Henry is down for a nap I will be right here responding and posting an update! (so don't comment too much tonight, k? ;))

The Magic is just made for days at sea! Good luck getting the one you want!

I just noticed you started your TR!! I need to get my head out of the books!;)

Henry is so darn cute!!! I believed he would have left you guys and would have gone to the airport by himself.:rotfl:

I hate that you guys had a delay, but it apparently did not hamper your spirits!!! How could it?? You were going to the most magical place on earth! Can't wait to hear more and see more videos of Henry.

BOOKED IT!!!

June 2, 2012 on the Magic...8 nights! Now the research begins. :woohoo:

One thing to note...
We did misread the schedule and my 33rd birthday (not 32nd :rotfl:
-seriously after 30 I have been loosing track! It's not just me, right??!) will be spent at WDW! I'm already making our 1-day plan of attack. Muahahaha! :teeth:

The DIStickers are down, but when they are back I'll be adding a pretty cruise one!

Okay, need more coffee. I'll be back later for a TR update and replies!

Oh that's so great!! Once again, I am insanely jealous of you! :lmao: How great that you will be celebrating your bday in WDW!! That worked out perfectly! I too thought I had to jump on the opportunity to sail DCL right out of NYC but I don't think I can justify it...... boooooo! Not for summer 2012 anyway. We already are planning on getting APs and making a WDW trip that summer. This can't be it for DCL at NYC, I'm sure...right? Maybe if they do it again the following summer.....Does this mean you booked your first official trip as a TA?! :)

CONGRATS!!! I am happy to hear you are a travel agent now!!! That is awesome. And as another bonus you got a cruise plus a day in Disney, AMAZING!! That sounds awesome.

Congrats on booking the cruise:banana::banana:. Sounds like fun. And no, it's not just you. I forget how old I am all the time...well, except maybe this year. Everyone keeps reminding me I'm going to be 40:scared1: next month. 40 really? It is just a number right?:rolleyes1

What a perfect spot to celebrate your birthday at Disney World, sandwiched with a cruise!!

I love that you goofed on your birthday number... I do that too. I have a friend who went for a full year thinking she was a year older than she actually was! It wasn't until she was nearing her next birthday that she mentioned it to her brother who did some family birthday math and told her she was actually turning that age on her next birthday. She said was great gaining a whole year to her life like that! :cheer2:

Noah will be insanely jealous that you're going on a birthday cruise(well, me too for that matter!)... I found out through a friend who's son is a friend of Noah's that he went to school and invited his classmates on a Disney Cruise for his birthday in May!! :lmao: What a turkey! (Little does he know that he and I are leaving on Mother's Day for four nights!!)

Congrats on booking the cruise! We had booked on-board last week on the Magic for next January - knowing that we would bump it to a 2013 when those dates came out. Well, I couldn't wait for 2013 and switched the ressie to a 5-night Canadian cruise for 7/15/2012.

You will love the Magic. It is a beautiful ship.

These are GREAT news. Congratulations and all the best on your new job.:cool1:Can I just say College of Disney knowledge sounds like so much fun!!!

Congratulations on booking the cruise also! This is soooo exciting! I would love to the Canadian one but I guess we will have to wait for 2013 if they ever decide to have it again.

Keep us posted.

Awe... that rip sounds like fun! I think I've read most of your report! ;) Congrats on becoming a TA and I'm totally jealous of your Disney Education!

I totally get your winter blues. Spring has not sprung here yet either. Being a SAHM is a struggle some times especially in the winter. I"ve been dreaming of moving to the south the last few weeks. So not realistic but it sounds nice at the moment. ;)

Can't wait for your next update. :)

Spring has been a tease to us this year! It's supposed to be warm again tomorrow, but then rainy and cool this coming week. :sad2: It is so, so soooo hard when there are so many cold days in a row.

You can always dream! Even if it's unrealistic! :goodvibes

I've stayed at home for the last 6 years, the last 5 with kids and it is hard. I am at a weird crossroads too so I know how you feel. I will have one in Kindergarten full time next year and the 3 year old will start Preschool part time so I will have more time to myself to figure out what I want to do with my life. I'm going to school very part time right now and should be able to go full time next year so that will help out with my feelings of no direction, being tired of being at home, etc. I feel grateful for the time I've had with my kids but the whole SAH thing IS like a giant loop or groundhog day or something, nothing is ever done and it's the same old thing day after day! Now if I could just figure out what the heck I want to go to school for?!! 32 years old and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

Hang in there. Something great will come your way soon :cheer2:

It's true! The SAH thing is a complete loop! I don't EVER get anything completely done. There is always a dish to wash, or something needed at the store. I clean a floor and 38 seconds later it has play-doh on it. It gets tiring. And all that is still happening, even with me now having a job of sorts, but I also have a to-do list aside from all that, and I DO get to check things off it, things have a start and and end! It helps!

I hope everything with school becomes clearer for you. I have a degree, but I've never worked in the field!

Oh yes, we get plenty of those!

I just looked at the pictures the other day and there are about 20 of his Legos too. :rotfl:

I have been following along w/ this TR and loving it, so I went ahead and started reading your previous TRs as well.

I was wondering what lens you typically use on your camera while in the parks? I have a kit lens (18-55mm) and a zoom (55-200) and trying to decide if I should bring both along with me to the parks...how about filters? I have several, but again wondering if it will be worth it to tote around this extra stuff! Thanks!:goodvibes

We only have the kit lens and a UV filter. The filter stays on most of the time. I would LOVE to get a zoom. We both really enjoy photography, but we almost always keep the camera in simple modes in the parks and just use it like a point and shoot. I do try to capture things with a few others settings on the rides, but we don't do much experimenting with it. The ONLY reason for that is because of Henry. Having a little one just demands extra attention and photography kinda goes by the wayside. As he gets older I can see us spending more time setting up shots and investing in filters and lenses though!

With all that said, we have a backpack style camera bag that works great. It holds quite a bit of stuff and is still light and easy to carry. So it never hurts to bring what you think you might use if you have the room and it doesn't weigh you down.

Hello there! I'm joining in for the ride! Looks like I'm not too late. I've really enjoyed the story so far and your pictures are wonderful. I love photography so that caught my eye immediately. You must use lenses and filters at WDW???? I know it makes a huge difference in the picture quality, but I just can't convince myself to lug all that stuff around on vacation, especially when I already have to carry everything except the kitchen sink for my DD. Maybe one day. I'm sure enjoying looking at your pictures though! And Henry is as cute as can be. Can't wait to read more.

As for your SAHM feelings, I would say that you are totally normal. I have stayed home with my DD for 7 years now and I get into a funk sometimes too. I think that women today are so used to getting out, being social, and "having a life of their own", that sometimes you do feel like you are missing out on something. I would just offer you some encouragement on that front, because Henry will be grown and gone from home before you can hardly blink, and I am certain that this time you have spent with him will be priceless to you. I don't think you will ever regret it. And try not to let the world convince you that you are wasting your time or talents because there is nothing more important that you could be doing with your life right now. There will be so many years ahead of you for all that other stuff, but Henry will only be little for a VERY little while. And I must say that the SAHM blues always hit me hardest in the winter, so hang in there just a little longer and I'm sure you will feel better.

As for going back to work... Everyone has to figure out what works for them and their family, but for me, working part time has been perfect. My DD started half day kindergarten last year and I started keeping kids after school. This year she started 1st grade (all day) and so I took on a part time accounting job as well as the after school care. Between the two jobs, we are doing fine financially (we'll never be rich from it, but it provides that budget breathing room you were talking about). Working like I am now allows me to be there for my DD after school, and I am able to be active in her school functions which is important to me. So I would say thinking outside the box when it comes to work was the answer for us. I think if you could find something part time to do, you would see that it helps a lot on the financial end without making you feel like you are loosing your mind because you can't juggle being a wife, mother, career woman, and everything else all at once. I know there are women out there who do it, but it just ain't for me! ;)

Good luck sorting it all out. I know all about how you are feeling having just gone through this transition myself and it does take a lot of consideration. I'm sure you will come to the right conclusion though!

Hey there! :welcome: Thank you for reading!!!

As for the camera stuff - I answered that a bit above. We do have a Cannon XSi, but we just use the kit lens and a UV filter - not too fancy at this point. A lot of times we even leave the camera bag back in the room and just carry the camera around our necks! After H-Man is a bit older I can see us getting more into having gear though...

As for the SAHM stuff - winter is HARD. And age 3 is HARD! I like your suggestion of thinking outside the box...I feel like I did just that with working to become a Travel Agent. It takes a while to make money at it, but I'm excited about it and just having that focus and drive for a career really helps in all aspects of my life. I do like that I can still be home with Henry though - and like you said, be able to participate in his school functions and all that. I look forward to it!

Still following!:rolleyes1

Good call on TT for the ride of the night in Epcot!

Your MK morning on Main St. is eerily familiar to our morning. popcorn:: You will see for yourself..... if I ever get my TR started. :lmao: :lmao:

:rotfl: You better get it started! I hope you took good notes, you'll forget what happened before you even start!

We will be in Disney for a couple of days before the cruise, but my compromise with the Grump includes NO park time. I think going up to MK and standing at the gates, knowing that I could not go in, would be torture!

OH MAN! That is tough!!! Joe and I have talked about doing a "no parks" trip someday and just take advantage of the many, many things outside the parks. The parks are wonderful (and it would be hard to stay out of them!), but I know you guys will have a magical time just being on property.

You can get a nice backpack bag and it will not only cushion your camera equipment (I know, I was knocked off a bicycle with mine once!), you can fit a small umbrella, your wallet/passes, and some hard candies. It's easy to carry, and will fit at your feet for all coasters.

Yes! Exactly! We have a backpack type, it's a one shoulder one. It's great-and has a waterproof cover. :thumbsup2

Hey Brook! Stopping by to say hi, and trying to play catch up. Been a full weekend of girls' fun, and I'm ready to jump back in here. Have a great day!

Hey there! I'm playing catch-up as well...as usual.

I'm so glad to see you started your report Brook! I'm also glad to see I wasn't too far behind. Yay! I've been gone for awhile so have lots of catching up to do. It looks like a wonderful trip so far. Henry is getting TALL! Cannot wait to read more. :)

Hey Kelli! So good to see you! Henry is getting tall. I think he's even taller now, it seems like he suddenly outgrew several pairs of his pants last week!

:wave2: Hi, I just found your report and started reading. Love your title and your little boy is so adorable! Can not wait to read more:surfweb:

:welcome: thank you for reading!!!

Brook - I have always loved reading your trip reports that you have inspired me to write one for our cruise.

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=40611931#post40611931

Oh, wow! Thanks! :goodvibes I just subscribed to your TR and cannot wait to read it - especially after this mornings activity of booking our first cruise! :hyper: I will get over there as soon as I can!

Loved your morning stroll down main street and your stop at the MSB :thumbsup2 Too funny about Henry taking the picture of the fruit!! :rotfl2:

I hear you on the Disney blues....I think that is why I always try to have another trip planned...although much more difficult coming off of a 2 week trip ;)

Weather can have such an effect on moods....we are notorious for having grey, dreary days here....I am always in such awe when I go to Florida and see that amazing blue sky :cloud9:
Your perfect fit will come along for you and family

Tracy

As Henry grows he shows more and more of his Disney education. Tonight we were at the Disney store and he was shouting out names of characters I had no idea he even knew about! I'm thinking next trip we might have to do a Mother/Son Food Report!

Weather has never affected me like it has this year. I just am ITCHIN' for Spring! Thankfully tomorrow is supposed to be pretty nice so I'll get a small taste of heat and sun.

Thank you for your encouragement! I am pretty sure I have found it now with the TA work...it's been going great!

Just for you Brooke!:dance3::dance3::banana::banana::yay::yay::cheer2::cheer2: Good thing come to those who wait.

THANK YOU!!!

thanks i hope everything will work out for you

Thank you! And it did! :woohoo:

Well geez, I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one around here lately who HASN'T booked a Disney cruise! Not that I'm jealous or anything...:snooty::rotfl: One of these days we'll get to go on one (I hope!).
