Our marriage certificate arrived in the post shortly after we returned from florida, we had paid for 2 additional copies so had 3 in total. I didn't take much notice at the time until i had to take proof of marriage to my bank to change my account name and i realised that all 3 are the same, they are all copies, we do not have the original. The bank asked to see the original and i said the copy is all i was given, is this correct or should i have the original? If not, who keeps the original? Just wondered if anyone could answer this for me.

In the States, original legal documents such as birth and marriage certificates are always kept by the issuing county and only certified copies are issued. The copy will most likely be printed on special paper with a raised or multicolored stamp and signed by the county registrar showing that the document is a legal copy of the original. I hope that helps.

Go to the Clerks office and ask them for a certified copy of the certificate. Make sure to bring identification with you. Call to see if they will mail it to you

Thanks for your help, the copies i have are stamped and certified so i guess that is all i need. Here in the UK we get to keep the original certificate.
