OMG will there be no end to this? Has everyone all of a sudden decided to come forward and accuse people of sexual misconduct? I know there is no excuse for it, I just wonder why out of the blue so many are being accused of it.

Why now? Because the time is right. Before I'm sure people were afraid to tell what happened to them. (or they would lose their job, be slut shamed, thought they asked for it, -- the list goes on.) It is hard enough for a grown woman to go through this but can you imagine those young girls in Alabama sharing what happened to them by an ADA. They probably wouldn't have been believed or been told just to keep it quiet because bring shame to the family.

I have no idea when it will end. I'm sure there are lots of men (doesn't have to be just men) looking back wondering if they did something.

Definitely the door has been opened for discussions - hope everyone learns.

I'm sure there are many that are rightful to come forward but I'm wonder how many are using this as a way to settle old scores that have nothing to do with sexual misconduct.

I absolutely support women speaking out now about this because the timing is right. But I also think it may only be the "right time" for those that have a public spotlight on them so it will grab everyone's attention. Hopefully I explain this right...

I was talking to someone I know about a place he used to work where there is a man who is considered a small-town celebrity and he is a known sexual harasser in the workplace, for years. And from what I gather, women are still afraid to speak up because it's a small town and things are not likely to change.

I'm torn on this whole thing.

I hate that people were afraid to speak up, and that victims would have been blamed before! I see the increase in reporting as stemming from a "safety in numbers" feeling, giving people the courage to come forward now.

But I do have concerns:

1) What Mizzoufan said about people making false accusations. - There are no trials before these people lose their livelihoods, and I can't help being reminded of McCarthyism.

2) The lumping together of huge things like rape and jobs being dependent on sexual favors with things like brushing up too close in a photo or holding a handshake too long. There really needs to be two levels of "bad conduct" here, and the consequences should not be the same.

3) The "pendulum swing" that will mean we lose good things along with the bad. - Many people will be so afraid of saying the wrong thing that they will say nothing at all. Workplaces will become "colder" and, as happens so often, we will go backwards in some ways to go forward in others.

I struggle with this too. But both are terrible, so neither should be in positions of power. If these guys lose their reps that's fine by me in either regard. We aren't criminally charging on the latter though. Big difference.

It sucks when you hear someone you admired was a POS (I loved Kevin Spacey, but flip him now); but I hope these things are going to be positive. I hope they'll be positive on the whole and individually. I HATE being hugged, or touched, by strangers, and even non-romantic friends. If these people just kept their freaking hands to themselves like gradeschool children it'd be done. That's what I want. I encountered this crap just Thursday when a date left me to go to the powder room where a guy smelled me. The bartender ejected him (not my date, a gross, inappropriate guy) in a minute. Folks shouldn't have to put up with that. If people keep their dang blame hands to theirselves, they'll be ok.
