Marineland - I knew it

Sadly this is nothing new at all. I've lived in the area my whole life and remember vividly the protests and newspaper articles from the 90's. It was a big deal and basically nothing changed. Anyone I have ever known who worked there was disgusted with the place.
Sadly people keep going. Some are ignorant of the conditions, some simply don't care and think it's their right.
We've never taken our kids there, and refuse to allow relatives to take our kids there. Despite knowing these things I know of at least 3 sets of people with seasons passes because they are cheap entertainment.
I can think of much better ways to teach my children about animals:(

Sorry to get on my soapbox but when you see the same charges and accusations over and over and over and watch nothing change over decades it all feels a little hopeless.

LINK to the article in the Toronto Star from today. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1241961--marineland-animals-suffering-former-staffers-say

I just read through the article and the links....holy crap!!!!!!! What's wrong with these trainers that worked there for 4 yrs/6yrs/10yrs that never blew the whistle until now? Sure they thought they were helping the animals but when they don't eat, their skin is falling off and the water is green and smelly.....WTduck!!!!!

I went there once, found the place dirty and lacking in anything worth seeing again. I remember seeing some very skinny bears, but nothing else. Than again I wasn't looking. The Toronto Star is a largely agenda driven newspaper. They get something in their head and it is fact even when they are found to be untrue. They have been found out a few times. I don't know if the animal cruelty allegations are true or not. Some people would say DAK is treating the animals cruelly because all animals should be in the wild. Look at the treatment of cows. we put them in feed farms and make them eat corn when they should be eating grass. Animals getting treated terribly all over the world to satisfy us humans. Watch Food Inc or the Cove to see what I mean.

All I would say about Marineland is it is the worst amusement park I have ever been to for rides and attractions. As for the other allegations, if true it is disgusting, if not it is disgusting to ruin a park and owners reputation. There are no facts in the article, just opinion.

I think this whole thing is actually laughable. Marineland has gotten complaints from people thinking the conditions are 'horrible' for YEARS!! Yet, there are no actual filed complaints against them. Really? If people, you, thought things were so bad, why not speak up and make a complaint. You are just as much guilty as the owner, supposedly.

Like any other park, Marineland needs an accreditation. While the group that does the accreditation is not licensed, they would not hand out an accreditation to a park that was not treating the animals well. As well, another group investigated the park and found no signs of anything being wrong with the animals.

This man, after QUITTING, finally speaks up? Wow. 12 years of working there and he now figures, conditions for the animals aren't good. You would think, that a trainer, would of spoke up, put in a complaint, somewhere along those 12 years. But, there is not one recorded. Makes me wonder what really happened with him. And how much he actually cared.

As well as the other 8, unnamed EX employees of Marineland. Again, now they are just stepping up. Something doesn't sound right. And why be annonymous? Why not, if you have a real complain, and believe in something, stand out and voice it? But, sounds like they are hiding.

I have a friend, who travels all over the world. And has a heart filled with love and compassion for animals. This is what she believes, after writing on her blog:

So.. all the people freaking out about the Toronto Star article regarding Marineland. I just wanted to point out some simple facts: Phil Demers worked for Marineland for 12 years before he figured out the treatment of the animals was *IN HIS OPINION* cruel. The WHOLE article is HIS OPINION — and trust me, the media is evil. They misprint, misquote, misrespresent and slander more regularly than not.

Marineland (and other aquariums) don’t use CHLORINE, the use bromine and brackish or salt water. Seals and sea lions genetically suffer from cataracts and other eye diseases. Go to any aquarium, or the wild (might I suggest the Galapagos) and take a good look in their eyes. A blind man can see clouding and discolouration. Deers: antlers grow and skin molts. The bleeding is natural. People should watch national geographic or something — better yet, take a walk on the wild side. If you want to see animals in hell – check out the Beijing zoo (in my opinion death row for animals). The life expetancy of male seals and sea lions is 20-25 years – Sandy made it to 20. That’s expected. The quotes by the veternarian were 3rd party quotes by Demers — there was NO actual quotes from a vet. Walruses often regurgitate their food. Google it – you can see videos about it if you so desire. Put a salt water fish in fresh water. It will die. Put a fresh water fish in salt water. It will die. Put diesel in a gas engine. It will die. Put gas in a diesel engine. It will die. A mother cat has a litter of kittens, moves all but the weak sickly one. Leaves it to die. Nature – it’s raw. It happens. It took Phil Demers 12 years to voice conern?? What’s wrong with him?!?!? I bet he got fired.

‎From the article – there were 8 others who all chose to not be named. I’d put my name to ANYTHING i feel valid. People who know me certainlly know this! I stand up proudly for what I believe in. Being anonymous is just a feeble excuse to bad mouth an employer.

I’m familiar with Ric O’Barry and his belief that the flipper dolphins committed suicide. And Paul Watson a world wide bully – such a severe extrimist, his cause (whether good or bad) is lost in his actions. I’m not saying that they don’t have good reasons or good causes, or bring important things to light — there are far better avenues and venues to get it done. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but becasue it is in print, it doesn’t make it any more valid or truthful. The Toronto star seems to be more focused on the slander stories this year.. I find that frustrating.

I think it’s crap that international fishermen can rob the grand banks. Sure something should be done, but taking my boat out to ram them!? Extremist. That’s like fighting for peace. It’s done, but does it make sense??

There are 2 sides to every story. Fact should not be opinion based. I just like to play devil’s advocate to people’s “knee jerk” reactions (thanks Gayder for the term!!)

As a youth, I worked at Marineland. I think that John Holer loves his animals more than the employees. First-hand experience has taught me a few things. People think the deers are starving and they only get fed the deer treats you buy. FALSE. The deers are fed a hay, foliage and berry diet, restocked twice daily. They are rotated out of the public viewing/interaction pens throughout the day. The treats they’re fed are just that – treats! Much like you’d give your dog a cookie, or a chocolate for yourself. I’ve heard people go on that the bears are SO hungry they’re killing and eating each other. FALSE. There was one incident in my memory of bears killing a weak, feeble, sickly bear that had been seen by a vet for failure to thrive. The bears did not eat this bear. The bears are given a carnivorous diet several times a day. They used to get marshmallow treats, but due to dental issues, it was changed to crunchy corn pops – their size and scratchiness clear up plaque which helps reduce decay.

If asked if I think that whales prefer oceans or tanks, of course I’d say oceans. However.. most, if not all of Marineland’s whales are born in captivity. This poses interesting problems should they be released to the wild – they don’t know how to hunt. There is a high probability they would starve, as they’re used to human interaction and feeding.

My whole family enjoys going. Gotta love that $5 funpass!! Where else would I take them to see and learn about dolphins, orcas and belugas? Not everyone has the opportunity to go to Nunavut to see the walruses & belugas in the wild, or the oceans to see the orcas, or the warm waters of our oceans to see the dolphins.. ALL where they have eye and skin issues, they are targets of illegal fishing and subject to toxins and oils spilled in the waters.. There is no perfect setting. I say kudos to Marineland for taking part in breeding programs and species saving. I knew one of the old Marineland veterinarians. He has since passed away, but he never had anything bad to say about the place. He loved the animals there, and loved caring for them. He too said Holer spares no expense when it comes to the animals.

I do believe that everyone should have their own right to an opinion. But, make sure your opinion is based on more than reading an article. Or what you 'thought' you saw at the park. There is always more to a story.

That is the great thing about opinions, everyone is entitled to one!! I didn't need to read that article, like I said before my opinion was formed after we visited there. And whether or not the article is 100% true, I am sure there are some parts of it that are true. Also, yes my kids could get to see a killer whale, a walrus, or seal there but at what price to the animals??? IMO not worth it for us. Won't support Marineland, and that is our choice.

We went to Marineland in 2005, and we were traumatised by how the animals were treated.

No. Looking back, we should have. We just pretty much told everyone we know. The deers were in such a poor shape.

For me the last time I went to Marineland was 14 years ago. The animals just didn't look happy and I never went back. You don't really report animals looking unhappy but it just didn't make me want to ever go back there.

BASICALLY MARINELAND IS A MONEY MAKER FOR HOLER. ITS NOT LIKE THEY ARE RAISING MONEY TO REHABILITATE THEM INTO THE WILD. ITS A CASH GRAB. YOU CANT HAVE WHALES WHO MIGRATE 1000s OF MILES TO GIVE BIRTH ETC LIVE IN A FISH TANK. WE HAVE LIVED HERE ALL OUR LIVES ,NEVER SUPPORTED MARINELAND NEVER WILL. WE PREFER TO SEE WHALES AND DOLPHINS ETC IN THEIR NATURAL ENVIROMENT.

:offtopic:

I couldn't agree with this statement more. Not unlike how people on these boards (and others forums like it) take what other posters write as gospel, oppose to getting the facts on a topic and forming their own opinion.

I just can't believe the number of people who 'read something on the internet' and believe it to be true without doing any of their own research similar to what you've described here.

Thanks for posting that link but I personally am not going to support that place. Everyone has to decide for themselves in the end.

Obviously that's going to be Marineland's official response. They aren't going to be like "our bad...we're mean to animals...whatevs...sorry and all that"

Im sorry, Im not here to argue, but where in this article are you finding this to be 'Marineland's official response'? There was no response from them other than to come out and enjoy the parks.

The response was from CAZA. The official report has yet to come out from their investigation with all findings, but it seems for now that nothing major has come of it.

Maybe a newspaper needs to speak with more than just ex employees before it runs a story. Get their facts, all the facts. Maybe they need to dive into learning about the animals, the way they live.

Ever been to ZooZ in Niagara? People would have a hayday with that place. Unless they understood they way animals were. Skin sloafed off all over the ground. No bark on the trees. BUT, that's what the animals do. Not because they aren't being looked after.

Good for Marineland. Hopefully, they will clear their name. And if there really is a problem, it will eventually come out. Or, maybe someone, will actually have the will to make a phone call.

bottom line. Whales shouldnt be in captivity!!!!!!!!!

BOTTOM LINE. NO ANIMAL, FROM THE WILD, SHOULD BE IN CAPTIVITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But they are. For reasons. Learn them. Some for reasons they shouldn't be. Some for reasons they need to be.

Go spend an educational day at Sea World. Maybe you will learn something about this.

umm....it's on their website (the URL is marinelandcanada.com)...but OKs...maybe your right...maybe they have no idea how it got on their website

I know the article you are refering to. What Im saying is that it's not what 'Marineland' is saying. It's an article regarding Marineland. The owner is not quoted in the article, boasting about his park, stating that everything is fine. By reading it, the quotes are from CAZA. The only thing quoted from Marineland, is 'come and enjoy the park, animals are well cared for'. Which has been founded by several organizations.

You said of course this would be Marineland's official response. Im just saying it's not a repsonse from them. They've posted it. But their is nothing from them. They have said nothing about their park in it.

We have been to SEA WORLD in Kissimee. We have paid the extra $50 per person to go behind the scenes. They rehibilitate. We have gone swimming with the dolphins in the islands. we have gone boating with the whales, seen them in their natural enviroment. Marineland is not Seaworld. This day and age people dont need to go watch or learn about whales in a fish tank . Learn on the Internet.
