Margaritas and babies

*
I'm certainly not advocating anyone to get drunk or even drink regularly, but I am pretty certain that most people would judge a woman who may pour herself a glass of wine right after or even during breastfeeding. This would actually be the ideal time to have the drink because she could wait several hours (until the alcohol is gone) before feeding again.

:rotfl: Yep. My dr. confirmed that the best time to have the drink is *during* a feeding. Baby in one hand, wine cooler in the other. :scared1: :rotfl2: He did have me pump and dump before thye next feeding (in which I used part of my backup supply.

Wait..isn't that why strollers have cupholders? :lmao:

Try the margarita and have fun! As long as you are enjoying the drink responsibly, I see no problem with drinking in moderation!

:rotfl: I say as long as it doesn't affect your stroller driving, you'll be fine! Remember, don't drive drunk! DH and I strolled WS with beers in our hands last March while pushing around DS 1 yr 4 mos at the time. Then all 3 of us kind of crashed out on the Nemo ride. :-)

I've found that most of the mixed drinks at WDW are a little on the cheap side. I haven't had a margarita there (as I don't drink margaritas anymore, let's just say I had a bad experience) but if they're like everything else mixed I've had, the "wang" as DH calls it isn't too bad.

Now, I will say the Torontopolitan at Le Cellier was pretty tasty and was strong until my food came which then soaked it right up.....

Jillian,

Enjoy your margarita, but as others have said, tequila can sneak up on you. If you'd like to avoid this, I'll be at Ft Wilderness in 2 weeks and I can introduce you to Mr. Smirnoff. :cool1: :thumbsup2

Vodka is SO much better than tequila.

One of the things that dh and I enjoy about wdw is that the kids are having fun, the adults can enjoy adult beverages and there is no "shame" in any of it. Have your margarita and enjoy a stroll around world showcase! :thumbsup2

What everyone else said and that if you're worried you'll get too tipsy, you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach. If you have your marg. after a meal, it will be absorbed more gradually.
Have fun!!

I'm just excited to find out that there is a margarita stand at Epcot.

from La Leche League:
"Alcohol passes freely into mother's milk and has been found to peak about 30 to 60 minutes after consumption, 60 to 90 minutes when taken with food. Alcohol also freely passes out of a mother's milk and her system. It takes a 120 pound woman about two to three hours to eliminate from her body the alcohol in one serving of beer or wine...the more alcohol that is consumed, the longer it takes for it to be eliminated.

The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother ingests. When the breastfeeding mother drinks occasionally or limits her consumption to one drink or less per day, the amount of alcohol her baby recieves has not been proven to be harmful.

Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers."

Judge all you want, but I will indulge in an occasional beer-- I've been breastfeeding and/or pregnant nonstop for almost 5 years now. :upsidedow

Thanks for posting - as another mom who breastfed her kids for a combined total of about 6 years, and drank in moderation during that time!

Btw, I was just commenting at lunch ( at Chili's, with their big margarita menu) to dh how I thought margaritas were really disgusting until I had a plain, non-flavored one! Tho, I actually had water, we were just looking at the menu. Margaritas are more like a once a year treat here...and the day we were at Epcot, it was way too cold to walk around with a margarita, so I didn't taste one there.

Us mom's deserve a break - we're on vacation darn it!! I hope to be pleasantly intoxicated during a large portion of my vacation!!!

By all means, enjoy it!:thumbsup2

This reminds me of the recipe / parenting book I'm writing: what drink goes with what mommy activity? A tongue in cheek look at what "Mother's Little Helper" really means. :rotfl2:

LOL, you and me both, girl!:cheer2:

Epcot is a great park to enjoy an adult beverage simply because of the varieties that are offered in each "world" as you walk around the showcase. Each has food & beverage authentic to that country. England or Germany is a must stop for dh (beer). ;)

Thank you for sharing this wonderful information with the group. As a woman who has read up on the subject and agrees with your statement that "I am pretty certain that most people would judge a woman who may pour herself a glass of wine right after or even during breastfeeding." I haven't recieved as many dirty looks as I thought I would while enjoying an occasional beer while my son has his dinner. I haven't had a chance to visit WDW since he has been born though I have enjoyed a margarita. Here's a pic from when DH and I took him out for his 2 week birthday. What else are cup holders on strollers for? :)

Will we be taking our DS 10 months and I was wondering what people thought about walking around with a margarita and pushing your 10 month old in a stroller. I would like to try one, but I grew up in a family where drinking wasn't allowed and am not sure about what is okay and not okay. I usually only drink a glass of wine with dinner twice a year if that

IMO, as long as you're not giving sips to the baby or drunk-driving the stroller into a brick wall, you're fine! :rotfl: Haven't read ahead, but as a mom who nursed, I would say to feed the baby first if you're breastfeeding, then immediately have your adult beverage, so it will be out of your system by the time the next feeding rolls 'round. Enjoy! ;)

I don't drink much either, very rarely, and I usually get one or two drinks during a WDW trip. Definitely know your limits though, and toss the drink if need be.

We also use WDW transportation, so driving isn't an issue.

Not only is it completely appropriate, but it's also a way to model responsible drinking to your children. If they grow up seeing that the adults in their life have a drink or two occasionally but do not get stinking drunk, rather than seeing you "drink to get drunk," it promotes a healthier and more responsible attitude about alcohol.

Of course, choosing not to drink is healthy and responsible too! :goodvibes

You are ABSOLUTELY right. I grew up in a household where drinking was not ok in any form and I really wish I had someone to model responsible dinking behavior. It would have saved me some grief in college. My husband grew up in a house where a glass of wine at dinner and social drinking at parties was the norm. He never really "went wild" in college b/c it just wasn't a big deal.

My DP and I are past the point of needing a stroller, however our DDs understand that having a social drink puts the Mommies in a better mood. LOL

We have dinner parties all the time, and up until bed time the girls are always invited. If you hide even social drinking from your children they WILL think drinking is wrong. As with anything else, it requires explanation and education.

Have your margie and don't worry about everyone else. This is YOUR vacay.

My husband's greatest moment at Disney was when he realized the hotel bars took Disney Dollars. Have a great trip.

Another breastfeeding mom here and I definitely enjoyed my glass of wine from France when we were in WDW last month. Having the occasional drink while breastfeeding is completely OK and thanks to the PP who brought out the info for others to see. Breastfeeding mom's (and all moms for that matter) have the hardest job out there so let's not be too quick to judge. FWIW, after having my glass of wine I did kind of wish I'd held out for the margerita in Mexico. Next time we'll have to walk clockwise around the world.:lmao:
