Has anyone around here been to Marengo Cave? I'm thinking about stopping there on my way through that area. Is it a good tour? Are there many steps to get in and out of the cave?

TIA. :)

Beautiful area that part of IN! Lived there all my life till moving to FL last year. Yet I never went to Marengo caves. There is another cave in Leavenworth IN that does not have steps. It is Off I64 and is closer to the Interstate than Marengo caves.

Squire Boone Caverns down south of Corydon In is a nice cave but many many steps to get up out of that tour.

I can give you lots of info on the area in general as to where to eat an stay over night if needed.

I visited when I was little and enjoyed it, but that was a looooong time ago. We went to Santa Claus land, too.

Santa Clausland is now Holiday World very very nice little amusement park with a waterpark

Hey, thanks! Is Wyandotte Cave the one you're talking about that's near Leavenworth? I looked online to find out about that one, and it referred to 2 caves (Little Wyandotte Cave and the main one -forget how they referred to that one). Which would be better for a nice cave tour, but not many steps?

I'm also planning to go to Lincoln City and see the boyhood home and whatever else is there. Have you been there before?

Two more questions if you don't mind. Is Hwy 231 heading north a good route to take as I make my way from Lincoln City to Indianapolis? Or does it have a ton of stoplights? Also, are you familiar with Gasthof Amish Village?

Thanks again!

I saw the town of Santa Claus on the map and was curious about that. I bet Santa Claus Land was a blast when you were a kid!

YES Wyandotte Cave !!! Sorry I can't spell lol

Lincoln City an Lincoln's boyhood home is a nice little place to stop an visit and is right down the road from Holiday World there at Santa Claus Land IN.

Actually Holiday World is much better now than what is was when I was a kid...more rides more thrill rides an the addition of the water park. www.holidayworld.com
This park has free parking free soft drinks all day long every day an free sunscreen at the waterpark. Cleanist nicest amusement park ever! The coasters has won a few awards for being top coasters etc.

I know nothing about the amish community SORRY there are a few amish scattered out around southern IN as well as on up in northern IN.

Where are you coming from? From Louisville KY to Corydon is 30 mins from the bridge has nice hotels just built in the last 5 yrs or so an many resturants an is the only town between Louisville an Holiday World Lincolns boyhood area that has anything.

From there Marengo Cave an Wyandotte cave is 30 mins away give or take. Marengo Is on Hwy 64 Wyandotte is on Hwy 62 which is a scenic byway thru IN just beautiful county an it is country Holiday World is about 45 mins to an hour from Corydon.

Hi! can't help with Murango but we just did Squire Boone Caves two weeks ago and spent the night in Corydon. It was our half way point between Michigan and Gatlinburg, TN.

The Squire Boone cave was very beautiful and has lots of pretty features due to all the water in the cave. It was a little smaller than some caves we have been to but it had a lot of different features. It has a twisty metal staircase you take to go into the cave -- our guide went down it really slow to keep the rest of us slow. It wasn't too bad, 73 steps. After that there really isn't too much walking and at one point there are benches to sit on as they talk about some of the features.

One of the reasons I chose this cave was for the village next to it (with candle making, bakery, rock shop etc). Maybe there is more going happening on weekends but on a Friday it was pretty dead. But the good news is they didn't charge the $3 parking/activity fee.

Have fun!

FYI, the Wyandotte caves are currently CLOSED to the public in a effort to protect the bat populations in them from a deadly fungal infection ("White Nose Syndrome") that is decimating bat colonies (humans are safe) across infected states. WNS has now appeared in Indiana. The fear is that people can spread the infection to other locations on clothing and the soles of their shoes. Wyandotte caves are owned by the State of Indiana and therefore aren't reliant on visitor's fees like commercial show caves, so they've closed the caves until the WNS danger passes.

However, commercial show caves like Marengo remain open to the public. I've been in Marengo once on a "wild cave" and overnight tour. But it was close to 30 years ago and I don't remember a lot about the "show cave" part of the tour to be able to recall if there are many steps.

Wow, thanks for this info. Looks like I'll be trying Marengo Cave.

Thanks to all of you for the replies. I've traveled in Indiana many times over the years, but have never seen that southern section west of Louisville on I-64. I decided to poke around there a little while on this trip.

Sorry I did not know that Wyandotte was closed. I've not lived in the area for a year an the last few months I lived there was busy planning retirement an moving.

Out I64 is BEAUTIFUL country the beauty is the only thing I miss about the area definatly not the weather. The whole area from Louisville to just west of the Holiday World exit then the land becomes flat. It's only hilly about 30 or 40 miles north in Indiana too.

Come to think of it going up I65 from Louisville is not hilly at all yet Madison area to the east of I65 is very hilly an to the west of I65 is hilly I'd never really thought about that.

No need to apologize at all! Your replies have been very helpful. I'm on my way this morning, though unfortunately it is raining. Sightseeing isn't as much fun in the rain. :headache:

Hope you're enjoying your retirement in Florida. Whereabouts did you settle?
