Gosh..I hope she is O.K., I find it odd that we have not heard from her in so long. We had responded (PM) back and forth a few times, and it has been quite awhile since I've heard from her..

Hopefully it is nothing more than just being busy!!!!!

It was 75 degrees in DC yesterday. We ate dinner outside on the patio. If this is global warming, then I'm all for it.

Hush your mouth. This warm weather of yours is giving us snow, again. School is cancelled, again. I think that this is the 8th day of no school due to weather this year.

I told my son's teacher (GRADE 1) today that we will be away for two weeks and asked for work so that he isn't inundated when he returns and she refused to give me work (said she doesn't plan that far ahead and it was "board policy" - which it is not, I checked!) She also would not reassure DS that he can go to Disney and have fun and not worry about it - flat out looked me in the eye and refused to say it to him! OMG!...a bit of background info - DS came home last week and asked if we'd be in Disney for his March break and when I told him no he CRIED about going!!! AGH!

OMG! Sorry to hear that. Oh that would so p*ss me off, especially in 1st grade. What kind of power trip is she on that she could not even tell him to have fun and not worry? Poor little guy :sad1: That's too young to be worrying about such responsibilities.
Thanks for the reminder that I have to tell my DD's teacher that she'll be out 6 days. She's in 3rd grade and I have always assumed that the teacher will be fine with it and give us the work. Keeping my fingers crossed. My DD told me that she'd like to get a perfect attendance award at least once and I told her sorry, but that's probably never gonna happen. :rolleyes1

Melissa,

Don't get mad, get even. Go to the school principal, with school board policy in hand. That is ridiculous. This is first grade! Johnna and I talked about it long and hard because our DS is in kindergarten (in a pretty challenging curriculum) and my response was and continues to be that a week at sea on the Disney Magic a) will be memories that will last a lifetime and b) won't keep him from getting into Harvard.

But don't give up. Sounds like that teacher is a real dolt.

Mark

We haven't told the girls schools yet. I'm not too worried about Kathryn, since she is in 2nd grade, But Alana in 7th could be a bit more difficult. They both know that they will be doing schoolwork on the cruise, having the 3 days at sea will help with that. We'll have to get all the kids together and have study parties on board!

Yes...and us mom's can have a Margarita study LOL !!!!????

We still have not talked to the schools about missing yet, as well...But need to be doing that here pretty soon, I'm not anticapating any problems...

Although.... We have had the stomach flu here in our house and Emily is home for the 3rd day w/ it...so I really hate that she has missed these last 3 days, knowing that she will be missing as well for the trip ( all in the same quarter, yikes!!!! the days are adding up fast :sad2: ) I've been teasing her...telling her that I didn't want her to grow up so fast anyway...and that this way I can keep her in the 7th grade for another year!!!! :)

Melissa, sorry that your teacher is being so difficult.... some people are just like that, it's sad that a 1st grade teacher has to be one of them...hopefully she will come around, and reasure your son that it will be fine, and to go and have a GREAT time!!!! ( and maybe even throw in an appology to you as well!!!)

Brenda:)

I agree. Although DD13 teachers are most likely going to be the same way. I hate that they make you feel guilty about making memories with your kids. And like Mark said, it isn't like it is going to keep them out of college, for God's sake!!! But I have to admit that I dread telling them. And honestly, I think that the kids really are gaining life experiences from the cruise (learning OUTSIDE of the classroom).

I agree with you all and I do not regret our decision to take him out, I just wish it could be an easier process. In my work I am accustomed to advising teachers on what needs to happen to facilitate learning in the classroom for particular students - and my recommendations being implemented - I don't like this being on the mom-end of it and not being taken as seriously! I also do NOT tolerate well the power-tripping over-controlling types - grrr!

And thanks for the advice - Mark: I did speak to the principal and DH is meeting with him tomorrow as well. And, although not a board policy it is a school policy (apparently there can be a policy at that level, despite the fact that the fact that the board doesn't :confused3 - oh well).

I think I have assured DS enough that it's all good - in fact, he started packing last night and was trying out his pirate gear tonite:goodvibes

On a brighter note...I just bought tickets to go see a Tiger's game in Lakeland, Fl on the Tuesday before the cruise - woohoo!:cool1:

Brenda - we think alike. We're going to be fast friends...although I don't think my kindergartener will have homework. Can I still be part of the Margarita study group?? :teacher: :drinking:

And hopefully sickness now  will mean no sickness between March 3-10.:cheer2:

Hi all
Haven't been on in a long while...busy with new baby...althought he isn't so new anymore...3.5 months and it flew by. He's doing really good so I'm not too worried about taking him on the cruise.

Hey you americans...don't talk to me about the weather...ha ha ha....we just got over the worst blizzard here in 50 years. School was cancelled (and in the city that NEVER happens) because you literally could not see 6 feet in front of you. And the temperature??? You guys are bombing warm compared to us...it was -32C and with windchill factor it's like -60C (that's -26F and -76F respectively)...so we CAN'T wait to get down south where it's warmer. The last couple days have been warmer...-6C (or 22F).

Speaking of school....we talked to our DDs teacher and she has agreed to letting us know what she will miss, even though it's only kindergarten. In her kindergarten, they are learning to read using a method called PWIM (picture work induction method) so she will "miss" stuff...and she does have homework every week...so we'll be getting that....geez homework in kindergarten...although it won't be much.

Looking forward to the cruise!!!!!

Yes Johnna, you most certainly can be a part of the Margarita study, as I see that you do need a little help w/ your math facts.....:teacher: (1+1) = :drinking: :drinking: (2 drinks not 1) LOL

Hmmm...I'm liking the sounds of this Margarita study group:thumbsup2 To make sure we don't exclude any of the more prominent theories, we may also want to do some study of the Daquari, the Pina Colada and some of the other more exotic blends as well...:rotfl:

A girl after my own heart. I've been looking forward to a martini flight ever since I read about it (and saw pictures) in Erica's 'Geeks on a Boat' trip report. This is definately my kind of study group. :drinking1

I guess we'll have to find a designated homework checker for the kids!

I think we will probably also have to study up on the Drink of the day! Can't miss any of our school work! :drinking1

I agree ;) - it would just be plain rude to not give due attention to those daily specials - afterall, I'm sure that alot of thought and planning went into them :lmao: We wouldn't want to let anyone down or make them feel that their efforts were less than appreciated, now would we??:rotfl2: :rolleyes1
