March 14, '10 "Wonder"ful cruise!!

Wow this trip is coming up fast, and it will be here before we know it.

Plans for pre cruise keep changing , looks like we may end up going to Disney World prior to the cruise. Have some friends that are going to be there and they want us to join them in the park for the day. Our flights have changed and we now arrive at 10:30 AM so it is possible, but not sure how much time we will get in the park since we will have been up since 4:30 AM. The smart thing to do would be go to Cocoa Beach for the day so we are not exhausted on Sunday, but we will see...

We revealed our trip to our children on Christmas morning. They are SO EXCITED! I'll have to upload a few pics so I can show you guys. I embroidered shirts with the cruise logo and wrapped them up with the postcard that came in our confirmation package. They were so surprised!

Now that Christmas is over, I've got time to focus on this trip and really prepare. I've got several customs planned to make for my daughter, and lots of planning to be done!

We are going to WDW for a few days after the cruise. Disney is having a "deal" for the Military.

Walt Disney World's Armed Forces Salute 2010
Walt Disney World has just announced that Active and Retired U.S. Military, including members of the U.S. Coast Guard and active members of the National Guard or Reservists, may purchase 4-Day Walt Disney World Armed Forces Salute Tickets for themselves and up to five (5) family members and/or friends for $99 each.

The base ticket is valid for four days of admission into one of the four Walt Disney World theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom Park). Although this ticket for family members and friends does not include either the Park Hopper or Water Park Fun & More options, this ticket can be upgraded to add either such option, or both, for an additional $25, per option. The Park Hopper option allows guests to visit more than one park each day. The Water Park and More option gives guests a total of four visits to a choice of a Disney water park, DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park or certain other attractions.

During this offer period, active or retired U.S. military personnel may make a one-time purchase of up to a maximum of five 4-Day companion tickets (one theme park per day) for $99 per ticket, for family members (including spouse) or friends. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be activated by September 26, 2010, and must be purchased by July 31, 2010. Block out dates March 27 – April 9, 2010 at all Disney theme park locations. July 3 – 4, 2010 at the Magic Kingdom only. Tickets available for purchase at Shades of Green beginning January 3, 2010.

Active or Retired Military must show a valid United States Military ID card. Activated members of the National Guard or Reservists must present their orders in addition to a Military ID card.

Booked on March 14th for the 4 day Wonder cruise. Family is so excited... this is our first cruise ever. We are from Canada and can't wait to escape the cold and snow.

Whooo HOOO!! Our first cruise too.We hit the World every year to escape the snow and cold. We are from Chatham(small world) I just shopped in London today and frequent there often.Went to the Grand Theatre last pm to see your city's production of the Wizard of Oz and it was amazing. One of the actresses had Disney Cruise line as one of her credentials. :thumbsup2 Ourselves and another Chatham family onboard. mkmommy also a Southern Ontarian. Too cool. Any kids?? Ages??

So revrob, you embroided shirts?? Too cool.
Anyone else thinking of making cruise magnets for their doors??
I want too. Registered the kids for the kids programs the other day. No excursions booked yet. Not sure about this. May do ONE. But, part of me thinks I should just do the straw market at Nassau and reboard and enjoy a relatively less busy pool that day. Sounds like there will be a ton to do onboard anyhow.
My workouts I have uped. I want to lose a bit of weight for pigging out on board. Don't know how successful I will be at this .....Time wil tell.
I am so glad that I am flying out of Detroit as the new regulations sound like a bit of a pain. (although I am ALL for extra safety precautions) My parents are spending a month at a condo on Cocoa Beach so I think we will send a large suitcase with them for their drive and we will only have carryons.
Any one else going to try to pack light??:confused3 I hope the vacuum bags are a success.

Yes, I love to sew and have an embroidery machine that I really enjoy using. I'm in the process of making my list of "must dos" for our cruise. I need to finish up the shirts, I plan to make our family a fish extender and I want to make my children (at least my daughter, my son may not be interested) a pillowcase to be signed by the characters on board. I know I'm going to make a few things for my daughter to wear. Not sure what else yet.

Sounds awesome. I wish I had your talent. I am also thinking of doing the pillowcase for signing(mine with an iron on) OR I like the idea I have read about getting the photo mat signed. Both are nice keepsakes. Have you cruised before?

Happy New Years:banana:

We are from Guelph and will be flying from Detroit this year on Saturday, now bright eyed at 7:00 AM. I got a great deal for Park and Fly at the Westin at the airport. They were having a penny sale for the parking option, $119 for the room and .01 for up to 10 days parking, so hopefully being right in the airport will only mean we have to get up at 4:30. :scared1:

Not sure if my husband is coming yet, but it will be my 4th cruise and the girls who are 7 and soon to be 9 3rd cruise.

We are planning on going to Ardastra Gardens have the excursion booked but I think we will just take a taxi and do it on our own.

We cruised once before, but sadly, I had not done my homework before the cruise. We didn't know about the pillowcases or photo mats, or many, many other things that would have made our trip extra special. I'm making sure to get my act together this time!
My son doesn't act real interested in the pillowcase idea, so I may do one for my daughter and one for me instead. I really want to do a photo mat as well - I think that will be an amazing souvenir! I'm gonna start watching for mats now!

Guelph--Wow. Love Guelph> Attended the University of Guelph for my B.A.Good times there!!!
So, 4th cruise. Were the others Disney too??
Like revrob I too am researching to do a few of the extra special things.
What time should I show up at the terminal. I was thinking around 11:45. Is this a good plan??
They board at what time?? I know the rooms are not ready until 1:15 or so.
I am getting very excited. I have to confess to you all though...I am very anxious that someone will feel seasick. Not sure why because we have no one in my immed. family with motion sickness issues. The kids do well in cars, planes and rides. (me and DH too) But, I will plan to pack some emerg. supplies. What is a good thing to buy (that I can get here in Canada) to take for this??

I have done 4 on DCL and one on Royal Caribbean, and the girls only on DCL. I don't think they will cruise on any other cruiseline for some time, they love it, and are so looking forward to having 2 cruises to look forward to in one year, and

We live near the U of G and in the last 5 years we have had such problems with the student rentals that it is really changing our feelings towards Guelph, so not sure how much longer we will be here.

Showing up at 11:45 is a good time, they usually start boarding around 11:30 so you miss the early rush and the buses from the resorts have not arrived yet. Our goal will be to arrive between 11:30 and 1:00.

We have never had problems with sea sickness and last March it was pretty rough, we tend to have more issues with getting our land legs back. The first cruise me and my oldest daughter felt like we were swaying for 2 weeks after the cruise, last cruise was not nearly as bad. I did get something for sea sickness but I got it in the states before we left and I forget what it was.

None of us have ever really ever been prone to motion sickness before, and our son got sick on our last cruise. We didn't think to bring anything because we had never had motion sickness. I will definitely take something with us this time. I plan to buy the sea bands for each of us and take dramamine as well just in case. I've considered asking our Dr.(s) if they could give us a prescription for something just in case, too. I want to be prepared, but I'm not completely sure what the plan of action is going to be yet.

Was your son sick the entire length of the cruise??
Will you give something to the kids beforehand as a defense or wait and see??
I don't even want my DD to know that sea sickness is possible or she will be sensitive about it...
Question--Did you bring your own alcohol on board?
I read somewhere that the Wonder took the NO shorts in Dining room off . Is this true??

Our son got sick on the second night (in the middle of the night) as we were making our way to Castaway Cay. It was a real bummer. We went to the island for about 30 minutes and he still felt sick so we went to the doctor's office on board. BIG mistake. Because he had vomited (sorry, TMI!) we were confined to our cabin for the remainder of the trip. They were concerned that he had the flu (even though he had no other symptoms). He was given medication which stopped the symptoms right away. A cast member called our room every couple of hours to make sure we were there and not out on the ship.
I need to do a bit more research to know exactly how I'm going to try to prevent motion sickness this time. I know that I'm going to have us all wear those sea bands before we board. I think that there may be some kind of patch that you can wear as well? I plan to be as preventative as possible and still take dramamine with us just in case.

We didn't take alcohol onboard, so I'm sorry I can't help you with that.
I'm not familiar with the no shorts thing either. I need to check that out, I guess!

Happy New Year Everyone!!

My ds is 8 and has always worn shorts only to dinner. We have done a cruise on both the Wonder and the Magic. Shorts are fine, you will see adults in them as well, the Wonder removed the no shorts rule. Now, Palo is a different story, they will send you to change if you show up in shorts.

As far as seasick remedies go.....our first cruise my dd and dh had some problems as we were leaving port! We had dinner at Animator's that night and put the seabands on before we left for dinner. I kept them on for most of the cruise just in case, dd and dh only took them off to shower, they were a wonder!!! On our second cruise ds and I didn't wear them at all, but kept them handy. Again, dd and dh wore the entire time. We had some rough seas a couple of nights and everyone was fine.

Having said all of that, dh and I are both nurses and travel with a mini pharmacy just in case!! I have dramamine and meclizine, kids have taken both for car and airplane rides. You can get a scopalamine scrip from your dr, I have heard they are much improved since I used one many years ago. We will stick to the seabands and meclizine!!

Any questions let me know!

Thanks so much for this information! I'm so glad to hear the sea bands work!
I'm not familiar with meclizine - is it an OTC medication? Is it preventative or treatment?

The sea bands worked great!! Dh has trouble with motion sickness anyway so it was really impressive to us! Meclizine is OTC nondrowsy dramamine or bonine. They have a kids chewable version of bonine that is a different med. I would start with the sea bands and if that didn't work I would do the meclizine. Just ask your pediatrician what they think, although mine thought the sea bands was a bunch of hooey, but I figure an external remedy was better than medicine with potential side effects.

Oh I don't know if anyone is awaiting room assignments but the Feb. 14th cruise just got theirs a couple of days ago. So ours should be out in about a month.....very exciting!!!

That will be my plan. I have one more question as I'm googling the seaband things. Do they need to be fitted against the wrist? I'm wondering especially for my 6 year old daughter - do I need to get one that will fit on her wrist well for it to work?

I think I'm confused - I thought we already had our room assignments? Or is this in the case that DCL upgrades us? I have a cabin number that was sent with the confirmation - is it possible that will change?

I'm sure there's got to be a thread here on the DIS that talks about seasickness, but I just found this while googling and thought I would link it:

http://www.fishinkona.com/seasick.htm

I think I'll make sure to have a few of these options available for my family while on board.
