Marathon Weekend Weather - Version 2012

I am betting that these temps all moderate to around 48-54 for the starts. With the hi temps all seemingly constant in the low 70’s and the amount of normal humidity, lower temps are tough to achieve without a front to lower the dew points. Plus, we picked up a set of throw down clothes this week. I carried one set of warm up pants to Disney for 6 year before using in 2010.

So the good news is that I think 2010 is not occurring again nor is 2007.

This is good. I run in new england, so I'm use to running in the cold, but would prefer warmer temps as much as possible. I always feel too tight in colder weather, and I hate waiting around before the race in it... I realize the downside of running in hot weather, but it doesn't look like it's going to be too brutal...

Thanks Coach for always keeping us informed.

I am waiting till Monday to start packing but will bring some throw aways regardless. I survived goofy 2010:scared1:

It is always useful to have at least a throwaway shirt. If the start temp is in the high 50's, low 60's it is very handy. I have worn one at both the Princess and DL half in 2011 and was happy to have them. Using energy to keep warm while in the corrals is not helpful before a long race.
Happy Running!
Pam

I tavel about 40-45% of the time so packing is, well kind of second nature. No different than putting laundry up. Who else pack on the night before their trip to Disney - besides me. I just found out that I am amending my trip and heading to DC for the rest of the week following the race. Second year.

That would also be me. I probably will start packing around 9pm Tuesday and I need to be on the road at 5:45 am to the airport!

Sticking with my near normal forecast of between 48 and 52 for the starts over the weekend....

While running in the 50's and 60's for marathoners is not all that bad, it will be warm enough once you leave AK that you need to assure that you are hydrating well. Not over hydrating, but within the range practiced during training. Osceola is the road we run coming out of AK and we will looking into the sun as well as running along a jersey barrier that reflects the UV radiation back on you. So consider running with a visor with a dark under bill, sun glasses and of course sun screen.

Anything above 45 to me means no throwaway clothes.

The only thing I'm a little worried about is the humidity, which is a major factor that isn't really brought up in forecasting.

Answering the humidity question, it may feel slightly humid on Sunday with humidity levels in the 60-70% range if you have been training in a very dry climate. At the start, the services are predicting humidity levels in the 80% range. So that keeps the surreal views of the park lights glowing through the fog from happening.

These humidity levels are generally associated dew points in the mid 40's for the starts and lower 50's for the mid day temps. Both these represent really nice humidity levels for most runners.

I looked at the winds and the services offer a confusing story. There must still be a chance for a front to sneak in, but I am not planning on it.

Yeppers on the throwaway clothing. I went put on Friday to pick up a couple days worth of throw down stuff. Guess I cursed it

Still hoping for cooler weather to blow down somehow. *sigh*

I will pack the night before we leave and probably finish the morning of the trip. ;)

I went out for the last long run this am. Start temp 54F with a 15 mph wind out of the north. and still feeling humid from all the sea fog blown out by the front. Guess I am ready - but would really love to see the temps starting in the low 40's rather than the low 50's

I just hope it isn't going to be going anywhere warmer than low 70s. A 48 degree start is too cold to be running with no shirt at all, but 75 is too hot to be wearing a tech shirt.

One thing I'd like to point out is that the humidity is RELATIVE.

The colder the air, the less moisture it can hold, so 80% RH at 80 degrees is significantly different than 80% RH at 45 degrees, regardless of dew point.

At colder temps, there is significantly less moisture in the air than warmer. It just can't hold it. So even at high RH's at cold temps you can still get very dry and dehydrated.

I'll actually be packing pretty light, run-clothing-wise. With my screwy metabolism I'll be pretty warm by the end of the first mile. Probably just a shirt, shorts and my compression shorts. But my flame embroidered arm warmers will be along for the ride to make me go real fast.

Just in case. :lmao:

Putting this forecast in a little perspective with historic temps....

if these forecasts hold, this is only the 4th warmest of the 14 that I have attended. While warmer than many runners would like, it is no where near a critical temperature. We should ba able to run a great run and not have heat t blame as a result of dragging... Still for many who train in very dry and cold climates, this will feel a little warmer than you are used to, and for those of use who seem to have long runs tie into days starting in the upper 60's this may feel cool. Hydration will be key. Remember that PowerAde is at each and ever table. You will sweat, even if this feels comfortable.

Oh and as a frame of reference, the finish temps for the half should still be in the 50's given this forecast, possibly lower 60's if the humidity is drier than currently forecast. For the full, I would expect noon temps in the upper 60's. Still not so bad running weather, but getting to the point where you will feel rather warm. Obviously these are just guesses based on a few observations... but then what is a weather forecast?

While I'd love to see the temps about 5-10 degrees cooler, I think I can live with it. I ran a 5K at noon yesterday in the lower 60s and sunny (and windy!), and I considered it prep for marathon weekend. It was tolerable - and it will be nice to be at half/marathon pace instead of flat-out 5K pace like yesterday.

I also picked up my throwdown clothes at Walmart a few days ago (sweats for $3-6) and I may just keep the tags on and return them if I don't use them (which it looks like I won't).

I'm guessing I won't need throw-down clothes either!
I was thinking about running in compression socks because of my calf injury but will I be too hot???? :confused3
I'm really starting to get excited!!!!
I packed for my kids and I have my running gear in the carry-on bag (in the middle of my bedroom so I can still use what I need). Still need to pack for myself and either pack for my DH or supervise his packing. :rotfl2:

Amanda

I wouldn't think that would make you feel too hot. While I can't speak for your personal feelings, I have work compression socks and calf sleeves for numerous training/racing sessions in the 80's and 90's (and probably a few in the 100's) and never felt too hot because of it.

Amanda, I agree with Richard. You should not feel overly hot with the compression socks... Even if the temps were 10-20F hotter.
