Marathon Weekend 2025

A What to Wear question for the cold weather folks in regard to time NOT running…

I own a pair of fleece-lined running pants. The kind meant for serious winter weather. I’ve run in them when temps dip into the 30s and they were warm enough, but do items like that translate at all to non-running? Or are they dependent on the whole moving at a good clip to produce some warmth inside thing? Might I be better served by adding a pair of tights under them if I’ll be standing in place for hours? I’m struggling with what to do for spectating the marathon if it’s in the 30s or 40s. I’m good on top with wool and down layers, but the bottom half is problematic.
Don't add tights if it'll make all of the pants fit tightly to your legs. You want some airspace in there to help insulate things. I like a wind-proof layer over something like UA coldgear/infrared tights, and then maybe a fleece blanket around my waist/legs if I'll be in one place for a long time. (30s-40s is northern Michigan XC spectating weather, and it sucks so much to stand around in. DH got me a heated vest for Christmas a couple years ago and it's been sooo nice to have.)

I wore fleece lined leggings and snow pants when I was in Washington a few years ago during abnormally cold weather and snow. I was cold but the temps were in the high teens/20s.

I agree with @Herding_Cats - you want something to create an air barrier for insulation - layers of tight fitting clothing won't help much against the wind. I'd look at it similarly to what you want standing around in the corrals for 2 hours. Layers you can remove if too hot.

Spectating question. Looking at the new course do you think if my family saw us leaving Epcot (just pass mile 3, near the monorail station) they could get to Poly (just before mile 8) if we are running a 9min/mile pace? I don't remember what the average time it takes for the monorail to the TTC then walking over.

I think the usual estimate from Epcot to the TTC is like 30min? So that plus walking time to get on the monorail, and then from the TTC to where they are planning to spectate at Poly.

Thanks for the input - that was super helpful and appreciated! I haven’t stood around for 5-6 hours in serious cold since the late 80s Up North, so yeah - I’m pretty out of practice lol! My cold weather running pants are loose - I can definitely add a layer of leggings underneath and they’ll still be loose. And the pants are nylon on the outside, so wind and rain resistant. Sounds like that should work well enough! I always have an emergency fleece blanket in my car, too, so I can pull that out if needed.

I'm pretty sure I've asked this before, but anyone have good tips for Gideons? Not necessarily flavors or whatever, but more of making the wait manageable. I know sometimes they use a VQ....since I am staying at SSR (in the section nearest to DS), can I join it from the resort, or is that "out of range" for it? And there's something I've read about "warm cookie hour??"

I find fleece lined clothing quite warm even if you're not moving. I wear polartec leggings once it's in the 30s, and I am usually fine in them down to about 0F. I would just have a mylar blanket you can tie around your waist/legs for waiting in the corrals if you're worried. But I don't think you would need to add a layer since once you start running that should be plenty warm for the bottom.

Went out for a quick 5 mile run this morning. It was around 44 degrees with some sun. About two miles in I was starting to get really hot. Making me think twice about the tights for the marathon.
40s is such a tough temp for dressing. Sometime's it's warm, sometimes it's cold. 50 and above I am in shorts, 40 and below I am in pants. But mid 40s...can go either way. If it is 40 or above at 2AM I am leaning towards shorts for the marathon and just layering extra on top.

Take napkins, paper towels, bath towels, for when your nose starts running in the cold.
HINT FOR SPECTATORS: I bought a big box of Kleenex with my grocery order last year and held them out when I spectated the marathon. Runners LOVED it! They were also easy for me to carry, hold and hold out for them to grab easily. Highly recommend!

I’m taking my Christmas decorations down today even though I don’t want to. I’m normally a leave it through January 6th person. But I don’t want to have to pick it all up once I’m home after MW. Plus I want to get the outdoor decorations down before it gets cold tomorrow.

Watching the snow/ice chances like a hawk for Sunday/Monday.
I took most of mine down today too, just so I can focus on packing and prep this weekend.

Looking at the spreadsheet, you're a bit too fast for them to see you at Poly (unless you do some character stops), but Main Street looks good if they wanted to try and get there. Or they could stay at TTC until you loop back down that way.

There is another location in Orlando that a lot of people visit instead of the one at DS as it seldom has a wait. Of course, that means getting in the car. But I think they may even do Door Dash? Just an idea if you get desperate.

The last couple of times I went, they actually didn’t have a VQ. I think at least one time I waited 45 minutes. IIRC (which I might not), I think you have to go to the line to join the VQ and then they will text you when you can join the line.

@Herding_Cats As @MissLiss279 mentioned, the VQ at Gideons requires you to add your name in person. When I went by during W&D around 5pm or so, the VQ expected wait was around 3 hours--hard no for me, but maybe more manageable if you're at SSR--their web page says: "We take your number and text you when you are good to return! It is very helpful for our crowd control if you can return inside of 15 minutes. However, we won’t turn you away if you return later in the day.

A little more info on the web page......

I’ve only gone twice, so far from an expert, but I know one time we went we were quoted a 3 hour wait. We didn’t intend to stay that late but put our name in anyway. We were texted within an hour. My impression was that they said 3 hours to scare folks away in the evening.

I ran a local Cheers to New Year's 5K this morning. It was 28*, windy and snow flurries. I was able to test a couple of things and if anything I was hot. My HM costume includes a toque (stocking cap) so that was easy. My SmartWool tights were too warm so I'll skip them. We were able to wait inside the brewery until a minute before the gun; I'll bring some throw-aways for the HM corral.

Alrighty friends! Here we go!

Welcome to the 2025 version of the Marathon Weekend Dislist! With the help of @Kerry1957 and @The Expert we were once again able to fill @DopeyBadger 's shoes and keep the tradition alive! As always, we are using our best guesses for corral assignments (we based these on the POT thread and the times entered during registration) so I guess we will find out how that went in a week! On a side note, we did have to reduce the file size and therefore the resolution on this to be able to attach it on the boards. If you need a sharper resolution please send me a message and I can email you the larger file.

Super excited to see familiar faces and meet new friends on this trip!

If you'd like a PDF version of any of the runner timing spreadsheets for an individual race, or one for all four (for zooming in, printing, downloading to your phone, etc) please DM me. THIS FEELS REAL NOW!

Warm cookie hour is from 2-3pm each day, and it's the best thing ever: warm chocolate chip cookie a la mode

VQ is in person sign up, so I always go do that first when I get to DS and then do whatever other wandering I want to do. Since I usually bring cookies home to my grandparents, I do it later on my trip and it's not usually a long wait, maybe an hour or so.
