Marathon Weekend 2025

NOOOOOO! We are due for a decent or even cold MW and I DEMAND it!

I'm at the parks this week and the weather is perfection -- 40s in the morning and 60s during the day with sun. I'm personally attempting everything possible to manifest this for the races.
Last night I slept with two blankets, I wore sweatpants and a heavy sweater to drop my son off at daycare, and then I went running in shorts and a long-sleeve t-shirt. :D I started with gloves but took them off before the first mile ended and pushed up my sleeves at the same time. Now, I am sitting at my desk wearing sweatpants and a sweater, a blanket on my legs, and a cape. :D

What I've seen for reduced fundraising (and in my experience you need to talk with the coordinator for these if they have reduced the fundraising as my husband ran "for" MS in 2022 on a very-reduced single donation+cost of the bib but the fundraising page still listed the full costs for everything.)

-AT Children's Project 10k $400 fundraising, HM $450 fundraising (I don't know if this is in addition to the bib cost.)

-Parent Project MD has "significantly reduced fundraising for HM and Goofy" (I have no idea what they mean by significantly reduced)

-ACS still has bibs. No word on what the fundraising is like. ashley.laplaca@cancer.org is the contact person for that

-MSAA still has bibs. No clue on if they have reduced fundraising or not. They have "single donation or fundraising options" available.

Tears of joy, right? At least we're used to the warmer weather. Think of our friends coming from where it's actually cold.
My body can tolerate heat except when I am running. I can deal with the 70s for easy, short runs, but running 6 hours in that weather would probably get me caught by the balloon ladies.

Don't worry Edna, it's only for sedentary activities!

@Herding_Cats Thanks for those references. I have checked all the individual charity pages (seems like a lot of charities compared to the past). Will pop back to check on the ones I feel most connected to.

For the corral: el cheapo towels and/or blankets to sit on or for warmth. I've learned my lesson about standing for hours before a race. My new method is to get there and find a spot next to the fence, sit down and rest my back and maybe gently stretch. Either sit on a folded up towel or a pillow. Again, the cheapest ones at Wally World are well worth the $$ and get donated to charities. Ditto for a sweatshirt for the corral and early miles of the race if weather requires. FWIW, I went on Amazon and bought the Tyvek paper painter's jackets. Totally non-glamorous, but windproof and good for warmth. Last Jan, it was warm enough I wound up checking mine, and then wound up using it as a disposable rain jacket later in the day when the rains came.
Oh, and if you have sensitive hearing, bring ear plugs; it gets loud in the corrals.

Thanks for the information! When is the latest we can shed items and make sure they get to charity? Is it during the actual race or is it a "last call" situation as your corral comes to the start?

There are boxes just outside the corral rails all the way up to the start that you can drop clothes/mylar in. There's often quite a bit of clothing dropped along the side of the course as runners warm up during the race and I think they still collect that for donation, as well. Last I heard, they gather it all up and launder it prior to donation.

Anywhere on the course! I’ve seen items discarded all the way to mile 25ish. For all I know, people toss items right through EP, but I imagine those get picked up quickly by CMs. We generally make an attempt to toss things near mile markers and/or aid stations to make it easier for the clean-up crew. Unless you’re a very fast runner up in front or it’s a hot race from start to finish, you’ll quickly see piles on the sides of the course build.

Just a little word about hoping for a cold front…

Remember that cold fronts often come with dangerous weather. The kind that delays, cancels or shortens races, and/or makes them so miserably uncomfortable you wish it had been canceled. Careful what you wish for!

I’ll see how the mornings are going and decide if I want to come say hi. I know I won’t make it 5k morning. I’ll have my family with me so I’ll be with them. I get super nervous on race mornings plus im kinda a shy person until I get to know you. But it would be nice to meet everyone and maybe find a running buddy. I’m usually a solo runner.
solo runner too..im an introverted nutball, but the group is easy going so you are welcome to stop by, even just to say hi.

I love running in the cold—it was 31 for my 8-mile run this morning and I was toasty by the end. I used to deal with it and just wear shorts, but I got a pair of Tracksmith running tights and a merino wool shirt, and it was perfect. Too often in the cold one part of my body is freezing, while another is sweating.

@jmasgat

AT Children's Project just posted on Facebook that they were waiving fundraising requirements.

This past weekend when I ran my 23 miler it was in the mid 20’s to start and when I finished it was in the low 30’s. I loved it! Starting a marathon in the 70’s makes me want to cry! How about 50’s Florida, I can work with that.
Last 2 days for my runs in SE VA it’s been upper 20s to start and finishing at mid 30s. I love it. was wearing my thermal running gear and switched my coat for a vest and wished I had ditched that. I was soaked by the time I finished 13 miles. I would prefer a start in the 40s with a high in the 50s.
