Marathon Weekend 2025

I generally take a box or two of breakfast/protein bars with me on running trips. The box is usually just the right size to hold the medals, which I wrap in tissue. It makes them very easy to slip out of the bag for separate screening if I put them in my carry on or equally compact in my checked baggage.

Perhaps I was overly cautious on the medal, the, but I didn’t want to risk DS having it taken away.

*There was a race in FL this spring (maybe??) where the shape of the medal was an issue and the race made it a point to inform everyone that they would NOT be allowed by TSA to bring it on board and that they would need to either mail it to themselves or put it in a checked bag. It was sort of shaped like a ninja star (lots of long pointy pieces coming off the medal.)
I remember something about this. I can’t remember which race, but maybe that’s what I was thinking about. It could have even been last year’s Space Coast. Those medals are always huge.

As for the weather, I thought it was a little too cool for my taste in Cocoa Beach. It was certainly too cold to hang out on the beach. By the time we got to Orlando, I had worn most of the warmer clothes I had packed, and was regretting not having a coat instead of just a light jacket. It was really good weather for the Space Coast runners, though.

Several of my outdoor plants did not fare well in our absence. For those of you who enjoy the cold weather, feel free to take this stuff from Georgia, too. We’re looking at lows in the low 20s for a couple more days. That is not what I enjoy!

I have never had an issue with medals at MCO. Trying to take three pizzas home after the New York Marathon, that created a little stir… But once verified as Joe’s Pizza and therefore worth wrapping up in groups of three slices and then wrapped up again with each other and then packed into a duffle bag solely of pizza. 😀🍕😀 to unfortunately appear as something else entirely not legal, it was approved and even earned some respect or judgement - a bit unclear. But it was smooth sailing from there. Froze it once I got home and it held up good!

For medals I have always wrapped them individually in baggies and then put all of them together in a Disney Bag and left them in my backpack. One time the security guard said something like “you just came from the races” and that was it. Every other time I was not even asked about them or had my bag pulled to check.

I am sure they get tons of folks coming through in the few days after the race weekend with medals and are very used to it.

This was last year's Miami Marathon. It was a gorgeous medal (more FOMO) which caused a lot of problems for people flying back home.

QUESTION TIME: How do you feel about running mantras? Do you use one?

I never really gave it much thought until I was halfway through with my Tempo run this morning and realized that I repeatedly say to myself "I got this!" during the course of a hard or long run. It got to the point where I said it to myself after each mile when I would confirm that I was keeping to my MP.

I didn't use any until my first marathon when I somehow latched onto "I am strong and getting stronger." I've used that off and on for harder training runs and found it useful. I was just thinking about that today as I was picturing the Disney Marathon and the slog it will be between AK and HS-- will definitely need something to motivate and encourage myself!

Great question! I don't really have one when I'm training, but in a race I have a history of being very mentally weak. Like, I won't miss a single training run, hit all my paces, but when I'm in the actual race and it gets hard to hold onto my goal pace, I just give up. So my race mantra has been "Want it NOW". It's not enough to want it in the weeks and months leading up, if you're not going to see it through when it's hard and painful during the actual race you've been training for. Really only makes sense when it's an "A" race.

I do like to do mental math for better or worse, "I'm X% done" or "I'm this fraction (say, 5/6) done" when it's a real grind of a long run. Your mileage may vary on that one though, I usually reserve that for when I'm over half way done. If I start calculating at 1/4 or 1/3 of the way through, it's going to be a slog.

I'm a nerd, so my favorites are "I am one with the Force, the Force is with me," and "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."

I also say "You can do hard things," and that made me think of a new one, from A League of Their Own, "The hard is what makes it great."

Ok my Marathon Weekend gambling friends, what's the over/under on when the Event Guide drops? We know they like to do it on Tuesday's. With today being DL registration day, I think it's safe to say that's out (and seems way too early). Looking back at past years, the 17th seems to fit closest to their historical trend, but then you had the earlier release of the guide for W&D this year compared to the historical trend there. So do we think next Tuesday the 10th could be the day? What say you - over or under 12/10 for the release date? As a bonus play, do we think they maybe release the rest of the 2025 RD schedule next Tuesday and then follow up with the event guide on the 17th?
Anyone guess this early for the guide?? 😁 and not a Tuesday?

This is interesting. There have been some changes to the marathon course map. Previously, Expedition Everest was approximately at 17.5 miles and now it's smack dab at Mile 17.
yeah they announced the new marathon course this summer and it's quite a bit different in a few spots, coupled with the 430 start time for 2025. MK parking lot switchbacks may give BB parking lot a run for it's title of most-hated part of the course!

Based on W&D (even though it had a super-short window for POT) we are operating under the assumption that A, B, and C are all POT corrals, with B still holding Club rD members? Making D the first non-POT corral?

Need one of the more observant folks in here to put together a nice summary of what’s different, the good/bad/ugly, etc. 🤣
Just one observation, and we knew this from the early release of the marathon course - it is going to feel really strange running the opposite direction through MK for both the Half and the Full.
