Marathon Weekend 2025

Per the big Dis'er spreadsheet that gets put together every MW (for those interested in participating), coupled with what actually happened, corrals release at approximately
A: 5am
B: 5:10am
C: 5:15ish--was huuuuuge in 2024 and may have taken more than 15min to release? it was a lot (this is often the largest corral, but we are unsure what the "new" POT window will do and if C will now be a POT/club corral, meaning D could be the new C)
D: 5:30ish
E: 5:40ish
The Balloon Ladies cross around 6am.

We should adjust that spreadsheet this year. This has been the past four years using the 7hr pacers which start close to the balloon ladies:

2024 - 53 min (Clock-Net)
2023 - 44 min (Clock-Net)
2022 - 32 min (Clock-Net)
2020 - 34 min (Clock-Net)

The calculation I use to determine start time is based on previously gathered information that shows the rate at which they release runners is fairly even, and thus is based on % of field within each corral. So A corral might represent 5% of the field, and thus is released in 5% of the allocated time. So if we set the ballon ladies at 40 min post-gun, then the Corral A release would be 5:00-5:02, and Corral B would be 5:02-X, and so forth.

Oh I definitely over-estimated the A/B/C from the spreadsheet. It's still accurate down to the minute like you're saying. I was about 1/4 to 1/3 from the front C for the marathon and started my watch at 5:16 this year. Which is why all of my times are "ish."

In 2022 they definitely shoved us out onto the course a lot more quickly than I was expecting....there were basically no discernable waves once we started walking (front of D) and they seemed a little concerned about the heat and remember Carissa saying they were going to try to get us on the course as quickly as possible.

So. With the announcement about the new tower at the Poly....are we thinking this may impact some of the DVC availability for MW as people scramble to modify some or all of their stay from a different resort to the new tower? Or is this going to be a non-factor since it was already open for cash bookings back in June? Not sure how the availability works out for that, but I'm curious if it'll shake things up.
I booked cash when they opened for it and was concerned they'd be delayed & I'd be screwed for MW. But glad they're on schedule! My first race weekend not at BoardWalk, it'll be interesting

Anyone have any luck booking into S&D for less than $850pn? I wasn't surprised this was the price in April but normally they've started dropping by now. I'm guessing there must be a large conference going on and there's a big block of rooms being held.
I’ve been checking regularly too. Hope they release more rooms soon.

I finally bit the bullet and am splitting my reservation booked the first 3 nights at the Swan and next 4 at Beach club. The Canadian resident discount they have going on right now made it worthwhile. Will still keep checking S&D as I’d prefer not to change resorts.

@Mr_Incr3dible Good luck on your surgery this Tuesday. I’ll be praying for you. I know you’ll be back on your feet in no time! Runners are some resilient people or maybe just stubborn. 😂

I totally understand about sitting around and not being active and also fear of getting re-injured. While I have never been injured to the point of surgery, I’ve been in a boot 2 summers apart 9 years ago. One summer I had a stress fracture in my left foot and the following summer I broke my ankle on the other. To this day, when I slip going down the stairs my stomach drops because I’m afraid I’m going to break my ankle again. Was afraid I wouldn’t be able to run again. It was a rough year for me mentally but made it through. I know you will too. Stay strong my friend!

@camaker, I’m not trying to presume a SAFD question, but just to get some discussion going:
DH and I were at WDW this past week. We went down for MNSSHP last Tuesday, and stayed until Friday. When we drive home, we usually talk about the new things we did on the trip, and even make a list. We had several this time, as usual. My question is: what’s the most recent new experience you’ve had at Disney that you particularly enjoyed?

My answer: We ate at Narcoossee’s this trip, which we’ve meant to do for the last several trips. It was excellent. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was great, and the service was terrific. The dessert was impressive, too. We sat at a window table, and the view was really nice. Here’s a picture of the dessert:IMG_6449.jpeg

Honorable mention goes to the Enchanted Rose, where we had a drink before we went to dinner. I’m not sure I even knew it was there, but it was gorgeous.

You're certainly not being presumptuous, especially after my failure to post a SAFD question earlier! I'm sorry I dropped the ball this week. My weak excuse is that we've been having the downstairs of our house painted this week and they didn't finish up until after lunch yesterday. So, between putting the house back together, retrieving the dogs from boarding, and running 8 and 13 miles this weekend, it's been a tad busy!

So let's make it official. Thank you, @princesspirateandrunner for this week's Sundays are for Disney (SAFD) question. What's the most recent new experience you’ve had at Disney that you particularly enjoyed?

SAFD: DW and I went to WDW last October for our anniversary. We went to Sanaa for our anniversary dinner and loved it. The bread service was fantastic and the spice profiles in the dishes were unusual and delicious. We'd 100% go back and highly recommend it.

SAFD: The new experience in April 2024 was going as a couple! Seing DH enjoying new to him gluten free food was a pleasure. His best: Churros at Nomad, Satu’li Canteen Bowl and Metkayina Mousse, AYCE skillets at Whispering Canyon. All Star Sports was also a first for us and we really liked it.

Looking forward to a bunch of new is a month: MNSSHP, breakfast at Boma, dinner at the Boathouse and AoA resort!

SAFD:

On our most recent trip for MNSSHP (we attended the Labor Day party) we spent most of our time at Universal so the pickings were a little slim on new Disney experiences. Our Disney day was the day of MNSSHP and we Uber-ed over from Universal for opening at Disney Springs, did some shopping, got some Gideon’s (which I just remembered I still have my cookie in the freezer), then used the buses to go to Poly for lunch at Kona Cafe.

We picked trying Kona over Summer House on the Lake because we liked the idea of a relaxing lunch and then taking the monorail over to MK before the party (the cuisine also appealed more to my niece). We anticipated Kona being virtually empty for late lunch, but the skies opened up at about 11:00 and didn’t stop until around 2:30 so the resort was packed with people returning from/forgoing the parks for a resort day. Fortunately, we made a reservation a few weeks earlier just to be safe.

Anyway, we’d never tried Kona before and it was a really nice lunch. Nothing outrageously special, but we all really enjoyed what we ate and it allowed us to be a little less food driven during the party. The plan worked perfectly for getting to the party as well.

And…as I’m writing this I remember that our primary concern attraction wise at MNSSHP was Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which was all of our first time on the attraction since it reopened. I’m always going to be partial to Splash Mountain, but I really enjoyed the ride in its new conception as well. Didn’t get to notice many details in the queue, we were fortunate that it was a walk-on when we went (during fireworks), but the on ride experience was really great (definitely boosted by having the previously mentioned fireworks going during the early outdoor portion of the ride).

ETA: Not asked for, but I kind of want to vent. My newest, most unpleasant experience at Disney was the Winnie the Pooh meet and greet at MNSSHP. We got a picture with Pooh and friends 6 years ago during the party and wanted to get an updated pic. We waited nearly 2 hours (fortunately, we had a great run from 4-8 pm and hit almost every ride in the park before getting in the queue or else we would have definitely left). We took turns going for food and drinks during our wait and my niece and nephew left and went on multiple nearby attractions. We tried to make the best of it.

But, watching the reason why it took so long was infuriating. The CMs running the meet and greet allowed things to get completely out of control (in my opinion). Groups were averaging around 5 minutes each with the characters; often taking, what appeared to be, upwards of 10-15 poses and 25 photopass pictures. The line wasn’t taking forever because of the overwhelming popularity of the meet and greet, but because of the complete and utter inefficiency. The characters averaged single digit interactions in their time between breaks (we watched them go to break 6 times).

The characters went on break when we were third in line. When they came back, Tigger was not with them (the first time all 4 were not together in our whole wait) and they’d sent in the coolers. Seems the line was getting out of hand and they needed to start having it actually move. We just wanted our meet and greet and quick single group photo, so this didn’t bother me; it bothered me to no end that this wasn’t how things were run the whole night (and it was disappointing to only get 3/4 of the gang). We would have waited less than half the time we ended up waiting if they had been running things like that all night rather than letting everyone before us take literally every single picture they could conceive. It felt like the equivalent of CMs on a ride asking everyone if they wanted to go again and only allowing new riders if the previous ones willingly vacated.

Sorry, I needed a Disney airing of grievances. It couldn’t wait for Festivus. Rant over.

SAFD: Newest experience was Food & Wine festival (at W&D 2023) and it was one of my favourite experiences - maybe because food & drinks is part of why I run - or also because it was a big extended family vacation.

Second was the complete opposite - my first solo trip for MW 2024 which made me realize there's a completely different way to experience a race weekend and the parks.

SAFD: going to DL with my Grandma for the January races was really fun. It was the first time going to Disney with other people as an adult, and while there was some added stress of being responsible for someone's happy vacation, it was really fun to see her enjoy herself and not have to be the planner for a change. It will be even better when she joins me for Springtime Surprise, because I'm much more comfortable navigating WDW compared to DL (I hope she ends up enjoying walking the 5K with me)

SAFD:
Taking DD on the pony ride at Ft. Wilderness was amazing last year. It's a super simple, and surprisingly affordable-for-Disney thing to do if you have kids who meet the size requirements. The hardest part was getting there, since multiple busses were required.

If it has to be something that *I* have tried, then I guess the answer is GotG. :rotfl2:

SAFD: I finally saw Pandora at night! I had wanted to for a while but it never worked out with either the park being closed before sunset when I was there or having other evening plans and not wanting to make the trek over. But last February I was traveling solo for Princess weekend and finally the stars aligned.

SAFD:

Next month I'll be doing the Keys to the Kingdom tour for the first time on a no-kids anniversary trip. Woohoo!

But on the last trip, the standout was staying at the Art of Animation resort in a Cars family suite. We've stayed in Deluxe, Moderate, and Off-Site, but this was our first Value resort, and we really had a wonderful time! My kids loved the Cars theme, and the Big Blue Pool, and the Skyliner access was a treat. (Although, at least the morning I was there, they seemed to load about 70% from the Pop Century line during morning rush, which was annoying.)

SAFD: Flirting with an annoying non-Disney answer to a Disney question here, but if I think back at our Disney travels this past year, the most notable “something new” that we all really enjoyed was trying the Universal parks for the first time, especially Volcano Bay. 😇😂

Honorable mention to Discovery Cove which we also recently tried, which was a pretty unique, amazing experience.

If I have to keep it to Disney-related, I would say spending more time golfing with my son at the Magnolia or Palm courses - we really love it there and have been enjoying spending time doing things other than always running around the parks.
