Marathon Weekend 2023

Day 3 of Dopey Simulation complete. 10 miles today, after 2.5 on Thursday, and 5 yesterday. Had a run in with an uneven pavement seam today that resulted in what I assume must have looked like a very clumsy tuck and roll and a nice skinned knee. Did another 2.25 miles and haven't had an issue this evening, so I'm hoping the 20 miles tomorrow go well. Ready for a taper, especially considering we're looking at highs in the teens late this week, which is not at all normal in Little Rock. Good luck with getting through the next few weeks, everyone!!

SAFD:

Good Morning runDisney All-Stars! It is time for SAFD. First, huge thank you to @DopeyBadger for taking on the task of the spreadsheet. I could have tried - but honestly yours will be much better! Much appreciated!

Today’s SAFD Question - Two parts: One, costumes update, for those wearing costumes how is it going? Can you share your plan or pictures? No shade on those who run sans costumes (I am one, but I really enjoy seeing the creativity of those who do). Two, for those who celebrate/have a Christmas tree care to share a favorite Disney ornament? Or if you don’t celebrate that holiday share a favorite Disney thing in your house. It’s the classic tell us you are a Disney fan without actually telling us you are a Disney fan.

My answer: I am not doing costumes, just not my thing. But I sure enjoy seeing all the cool ideas and creativity that runners have. I am excited to see what you all have come up with, hoping you will share! Here are two of my favorite Disney ornaments - honestly we have enough to have a separate Disney Tree, but this year combined it all into one tree.

Side note - I am sure most everyone is either running today or have recently completed the last of the most challenging parts of training programs. Just wanted to say great work! Enjoy the taper and the holiday season!

SAFD: I finished sewing my outfit for the 5k yesterday, and just need to get my husband's shorts done. I did a 6 mile run with my outfit, so now I feel comfortable making my other outfits. Here's a photo of mine and my son's outfit. Fabric was his choice for his first race:

Our Christmas tree has a lot of Disney ornaments, since we get one every trip. If I had to choose a favourite, it would probably be this one from Disneyland Paris. It also happens to be from the trip when we ran our first half marathon, so its very special:

You can't get to TTC due to all the road closures. As for Epcot, you should be able to drive. Here's the road closure map. You can see that you will need to come from World Drive.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1-s5mDiwMv7lqW4nFRDEAFDtBVrd2QpY&usp=sharing

Also, if you drive, you won't be able to leave til 7 am. From the guide.....
"Guests who wish to use a personal vehicle will need to park in the EPCOT Parking Lot, with parking free for participants and spectators prior to 6:00am. For those utilizing Ride Share please follow the signs to the designated Ride Share Drop Off area. Athletes and spectators should plan on arriving at EPCOT by 4:00am for all races. Please be advised EPCOT Toll Plaza via World Drive North is open all four race days, however on Saturday (01/07) and Sunday (01/08), the EPCOT Parking Lot Exits will be closed from 4:30am-7:00am due to Race Course related road closures. Traffic will not be able to exit EPCOT during this timeframe until roadways have reopened. Please plan any and all transportation accordingly."
Aaahh - I missed that part about the parking lots, but I wonder if the entrance will be closed or just the exits? I can be there by 6 - I was just hoping not to be there at 4!

Thank you!

SAFD:
I think I have showed u guys my red panda outfit from turning red since I got it for my birthday a little bit ago. But here it is again. FB_IMG_1671376312957.jpg
I even did a little test run with it at disney when I went during Thanksgiving but left visor at home. It did not want to risk breaking it. I added these cute gloves to the outfit.

Ohh and the back has a little tail and says "we got your fluffy back from 26.2 miles.

I tried running with the bigger tail I got in the hollween red panda kit but the tail is just too much for 26 miles. This is the bigger tail. Super cute but just too much for marathon. Worked great for my holloween outfit though. I think I might take some pics with it before running just depends on if I have room in the luggage.

2nd part. My fav disney ornaments is going to be my first half marathon and challenge. I really really never thought I would be able to do it and it is what got me the confidence to try my first half marathon.

Wordle solver's.....today's is very apropos!
I got it in three haha.

SAFD:
Costumes: they are going well. I ordered my 5k and 10k custom from an international seller and they were a little tight. I found a local person who is helping make them bigger so hopefully that works out. I haven’t heard updates from her yet though which makes me a little nervous. My marathon outfit is set although I still need to figure out the tulle riding up the back waistband issue. I also need cold weather contingency plans.
Ornaments: I may or may not still have my Halloween decorations up… lol. Most of them are NBC so I’m going with that. We don’t have a tree this year bc my dog just kind of stumbles around and likes to get himself trapped behind stuff so it seems like a disaster waiting to happen. But I do have lots of Disney ornaments… I think one of my favorites is Jasmine and Aladdin on the magic carpet.

If you want to watch your DD on Main St your best bet would be to take the monorail over to MK, watch her run through, and then you'd have just over an hour to make it back to Epcot (again, via the monorail) for the finish. The busses don't run between 430 and 6am because they have to close the roads for the runners to get through. And guests who don't drive themselves from the MK-area resorts are *required* to use the monorail for the half and full; there are no busses at those resorts for those days.

I know there are others here that have more personal experience with this. I feel like if anything is going to be tight, it's the getting back to the finish part of things.
We only have a tiny bit of experience with this, but can concur about the getting back to the finish part... My husband came to watch me at my first half marathon (Princess 2019). Saw me on the hub, coming and going, and then tried to see me on the road outside of the Polynesian but just missed me, and then thought he had time to sit down for a few minutes in the lobby before taking the monorail back to Epcot, and *just* missed me at the finish. LOL. He felt terrible (he was tracking me with an app and could see me getting there faster while he was stuck on the monorail). We were WDW first timers and just not familiar enough with how long it would take to get from place to place.

I have my last long run with fuel today, and of course my stomach is feeling completely off. I'm trying to decide between doing a shorter run that doesn't need fuel, waiting and seeing if I feel better later, or just going for it and risk feeling even crappier later. While my fueling is fine during the run, my stomach is never happy about it at the end. It's something that I know I need to work on, but obviously won't happen prior to MW

SAFD: You may be sorry you asked about costumes! Believe it or not there are even more details and a few test photos in the All-Inclusive Costume Thread if you're interested. (HUGE thanks to everyone on that thread for helping me make decisions and tweak my costumes.)

I'm doing a series of costumes that are the Emotions of Running Dopey. I'm mashing up each race character with the emotion that race evokes, and am doing a costume change mid-marathon. It should be fun!

5K: Pluto/Fear (ie I'm scared I won't finish Dopey.) Fear printed shirt and running skirt, Pluto tail, ears and dog collar, makeup nose and whiskers.
10K: Chip+Dale/Sadness (ie I'm sad it's only day two.) Sadness printed shirt and running skirt, brown arm and calf sleeves, chipmunk ears & tail, makeup nose.
Half: Donald/Anger (ie I'm mad that I'm three races in but still have the longest one to go.) Anger printed shirt, duck feather tutu and duck tail, yellow calf sleeves Anger light-up headband with duck bill and feathers attached.
Full: Minnie/Disgust to start (ie Disgusted that I have to get up AGAIN and still have a full marathon to go), change to Mickey/Joy at MK (ie I'm overjoyed to finish Dopey.) I will start with Disgust skirt (I hand painted a custom print with modern Mickey heads), black with white polka dots top, pink neck scarf with same custom print, leggings, Disgust wig with Minnie ears and bow on top. At MK I will strip most of that off to reveal a Joy dress with Mickey red belt with white buttons and remove the bow from the Minnie ears. My hair is already short and I've dyed it blue just for this costume!

I created a graphic to go on the back of each shirt that explains the costume and shows the progression through each race. It starts with outlines of the characters/races I haven't done yet, and those get colored in for each race. Here are a few examples to show the progression:

I need to sew the Mickey belt, add the polka dots to the black shirt and put the graphics on the back of all the shirts. I also need to test run my 10K costume and re-test my Marathon costume layers now that I've made some adjustments. I should have quite a bit of time over the holidays to get all of it done, and I have a check-list so I don't forget anything. I'll post updates and pics to the costume thread if you want to follow along!

As for the Christmas Disney question, a lot of our stuff is in storage since we have cats who like to use the tree as a toy. But we did get out our Mickey/Minnie topper this year.

SAFD: costumes are going pretty well now, after a hiccup over what I was choosing for the 10k. It may not look like it from this photo, but I have most pieces for Maid Marian in this pile. Constructing the headdress is a project for this week, and deciding whether I’m carrying a daisy or a badminton racquet. Leaning towards daisy not for weight, but because I think Lady Cluck is more recognizable with the racquet.

I’ve worn the same thing for the full each time, and will keep it because it works so well (and is my favorite character). My issue this year is how to carry gels- they are so big compared to the couple packs of sports beans I’m used to throwing loose in my pocket. Not a lot of room to spare with these shorts 😂 I also just discovered I can’t find my tail, so have to figure that out.

As for the other question, I rarely do a tree, but I still collect ornaments occasionally in case. The only Disney one I have is the only one I could find from Robin Hood in the park, and sits on my “favorite things” shelf just below my finishers ears. Those are my most prized Disney possession!

ETA because I just realized he’s in the photo- that’s my childhood dog Piglet 🥰

Here's my costumes. I don't make anything, just buy stuff off Etsy :-)

This will be my leggings for the half. I'm probably pairing with a hot pink t-shirt, depending on weather. I've tested them and they are so comfy and came with pockets!

I think I'm wearing this for the 5K? Not sure yet. Might add a shirt or leggings if it's cold. I didn't get a chance to run in this yet, which is why I'm thinking 5K for it. I also have a matching headband.

il_794xN.1942353844_7mr5.png

This is my Belle shirt for the 10K. I was just going to do black leggings or shorts so I'll have pockets, but I feel like a I need a skirt or something to make it more special. I have a matching headband too.

I'll post my favorite ornament later when I get a pic.

I feel so old saying this, but I’m finding the digital event guide kind of hard to navigate…? 👵 all this new-fangled technology! 😂 maybe it would be easier on a computer vs. mobile.
I wish they brought back the paper guides we used to get...nice keepsakes. but obviously digital is nice cause we get it before we arrive. I still have all my guides back to 2015
