Marathon Weekend 2021

Good morning, runDisney all-stars!

For this week’s Sundays are for Disney, it’s a training check-in!

How is running going for everyone in the new year? Who is training/tapering for some virtual WDW races? Or any other races? Anyone doing anything in-person?

No running yet. That starts tomorrow. The latest race rumors here say the Dubai 70.3 is going to happen in March. I’m leery of ramping up my training based on hearsay, and I’ll be kicking myself if I don’t and the race goes ahead. Decisions, decisions.

Anyway, MW wasn’t going to be in the cards for me this year, but I’m going to be spending this week about how much fun I had with you all this time last year. I hope you’re all doing well.

This!
We'd always planned to adopt another greyhound in the spring after MW. The pandemic delayed it, but now we have Austin. We just returned from his first-ever walk at the park where I've logged so many miles, both in training and just for fun. And it went great. There were no gunshots from nearby ranges. The cold wet weather kept many home. The cows in the field at the one end of the park were a curiosity, but he kept going.

I also plan on re-living as much of MW 2020 in the coming days as possible. Looking at photos. Trying to see if ADR's for the same restaurants are available. I might even have a long weekend off coming up. Hoping to run several of the same days as last year. If the weather cooperates, I plan to wear the race weekend shirts.

MW 2020 was everything DW and I'd hoped for and more. If anybody on the thread is on the fence about MW, when it fits your schedule: do it. It is rD on another level. It is DIS running friends on another level.

This week is going to be happy and depressing at the same time.

I am still headed to WDW. It certainly will not be the same. I am running a 5K and half on property for the virtual half and virtual castaway cay challenge. Basically since my virtual NYC I’ve been doing strictly maintenance.

Like @lhermiston I plan on hitting that 1000 miles in 2021. I’ve never done it before but I was just shy of 900 in 2020 so I think I can do it no problem.

Some familiar faces will be chatting about RunDisney memories live today. Message me if you are interested in details. Also on my Instagram I’ll be doing a look back each day.

We’ll be doing (walking) the 5k at AoA/Pop at some point next weekend. I had thoughts about doing it right when we get in Thursday night, but we may wait until Saturday. It’s our Epcot day and the later opening should allow us to do the walk in daylight.

I didn’t sign up for the virtuals, so I’ve been in maintenance mode (4-6 mile runs, typically) since October and I don’t see myself signing up for any races until in-person events return. My fingers are crossed for Lakefront Marathon returning in October.

If I can vent for a second, I got in 850 miles in 2020. Five years ago, that would’ve blown me away. But the last two years I’ve easily broken 1,000 miles. I’m determined to break 1,000 again, but I’m not signed up for anything, so I don’t know if that will happen. It’s really not very important, but I do feel a little discouraged.

Anyway, MW wasn’t going to be in the cards for me this year, but I’m going to be spending this week about how much fun I had with you all this time last year. I hope you’re all doing well.

Have a safe and healthy week!
I ran an in-person half marathon on New Year's Day. I wasn't sure what would happen since I had taken several weeks off from running due to an injury, but it went better than I expected. My legs were not happy though, especially after mile 9, and two days later they are still complaining. I've never felt such stiffness and pain in my quadriceps. I was/am training for my first full in April. I'm "supposed" to be up to a 15-mile long run. Given my experience with the half, I don't think I can do that mileage yet. Any tips for getting back to a training plan after a break? Should I try do 13+ next weekend, or scale back and then gradually increase? What would you do?

I don’t run much.
Last MW was my second 1/2 of my life. I trained for it by running 2 miles, next day 3, next day 7, next day 1/2 marathon. Thank Heaven for Oofos sandals or I wouldn’t have made it to dinner.
This year I signed up for the virtual Dopey. Training started yesterday as I ran with DS5 for his virtual 1 mile run... I don’t expect this to be easy. I hope I can get it done by the deadline (or at all).
I’m sad that we canceled our WDW reservation, but it didn’t make sense to keep it with no race related events.

SAFD: I’m finishing up my taper prior to running Virtual Dopey next week. From there it’s on to training for Blackbeard’s Revenge 100k coming up in March. It‘s hurting me to not be heading to Disney next week. This would’ve been my 6th consecutive Marathon Weekend and it’s something I look forward to every year now. I’ve still got a reservation for what would have been SWRR in April, so let’s hope conditions allow for that trip, at least.

@BigEeyore i was hiking near you today at Indian Seats. I thought about you, was hoping you had a good virtual goofy.

i am definitely in the same boat about being sad for MW. I did not sign up because I was not convinced it would be in person. However if the event did take place I would have gone down to cheer. This would have been my 15th year in a row going to MW 😢

SAFD 2021 Goals: Running wise, I am currently training for something or other on Marathon Weekend officially being registered for the 5K, Marathon, and Castaway Cay. But since I'm nowhere near marathon ready, I should do a multi day marathon and call that enough. I then move on to the Enchanted 10K and Princess Half, but since I registered for them separately, I feel no internal pressure to do them on back to back days. Then I transition to Star Wars Rival Run + Kessel Run Challenge training. That way might occur virtually on Disney World property, but I want to see how the vaccine is going and what conditions look like at WDW closer to the race before deciding. I visited in November and had a great time, but I'm not sure that I want to spend all day masked up in April.

I hope that California recognizes that the economic devastation is staggering and allows small businesses to reopen with masks and such until a semblance of normalcy returns. There is talk of heading to Disneyland with friends this year should that happen. We were all supposed to head down to WDW last year before last year happened.

I'm still going next weekend but shortened my trip to Jan 9-14th which still gave my my planned 4 park days (original plan was park days Thu, Fri, then Mon, Tue). Without the races just compressed it to Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue.

I cancelled vs doing virtual so I'll probably try to do some training while on-site but nothing much since still don't know when my next race is going to be.

I've put back on some weight I spent a lot of time to lose during this whole quantine period which I hate but so tough without races to plan for to keep on schedule at least for me. So going to plan for a Q3/Q4 return to racing and hopefully soon I can have some specific races to plan for. Makes it so much easier.

I did a half marathon in November and haven't run too much since then. I am signed up for the WDW virtual half and Castaway Cay 5k, plus the Princess challenge. I may go and run them at WDW at some point after the medals arrive so I can wear them in the parks.

I have the Dallas 10k and Half Marathon scheduled for May, which hopefully will be in person. I've started looking for other live races around Dallas. The Grand Tetons Half and Yellowstone Half are a week apart, so I'm considering making a vacation out of those, and I'm looking at the Mount Rushmore Half in September.

SAFD: I currently have no training going on as I have no races planned at this time. I do want to break 1,000 miles this year. I did it back in '19, but then in '20 I finished with 863 miles. But that was due to losing motivation in May, June, & December. I think I ran maybe 25 miles combined for those three months.

No training for me! Nothing virtual or in person on the docket... YET. I have been running at least once, sometime twice a week with my club. I'm hoping to get back on the wagon this week and I'd like to find a few in person races (10 milers & half marathons) for this year.
