Marathon Weekend 2017!

Count me in as a "Newp" also! In Pittsburgh, we're supposed to get freezing rain throughout the night on Friday and into Saturday. I've done a Dopey simulation run 2 weeks ago, so I've got 1 20 miler in the bag already. Was hoping to get another one in, but since I'm running for fun and not for time, I'm not overly concerned at this point. Having fun means being injury free. Freezing rain on the sidewalks could be too risky. That's still 2 days away though, so weather may change 5 times between now and then.

I'm with the others that did 2.5 on the treadmill this morning. By the time I would have gotten ready to run outside this morning in -13 windchills, I was already done with my run. Good luck to everyone this weekend who are running their long runs!!! It's almost Taper Time!

So, I feel that my "where did I put my keys" and "what was I just doing" state is in contrast to this article's findings...."expertise in sustained aerobic motor behaviors affects resting state functional connectivity" but maybe some of you youngsters here will enjoy knowing that running is good for your brains.

That's exciting, maybe running will cancel out the brain-numbing effects of the last 7 months of sleep deprivation after having my daughter! Although I'm pretty sure my loops around Central Park over and over aren't causing me to use any sustained navigational skills. :p

After a chat with @FFigawi, I think we're in agreement on "hosting" a meet-up at Beach Club!

Friday, 2 p.m., at Hurricane Hannah's - it's the pool bar accessible from the Boardwalk loop. We'll be in the bar area, but can also spread out into the table area.

I'll post updates closer to the date if there is inclement weather.

If you're planning to drop by, please let me know so I can give the bar a heads-up!

I'll probably be sitting on the Magic Express with plans to get to Splash Mountain ASAP right around then, but let me know if a marathon morning meetup is still in the cards.

Yeah, I will be in Atlanta on my layover at that time. I will have a drink at the airport bar and think of y'all. I don't even land at MCO until 5:30 Friday. But I know there is no way to accommodate everyone. :) Hey, @Keels is the post marathon Illuminations multi-boat cruise still a go?

That lands between the diaper dash and time at EPCOT for me too. I'll try to make it, but depends on what the rest of the fam wants to do.

We're characters alright...bloody cold here too, with windchill sitting in the -20's Celsius (-10ºF or so). Also known as "balmy" to you guys from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

I only wish it was that warm. The air temp was -11F when I stepped outside this morning with a windchill of -25. The cold was kind enough to zap the life out of my Garmin, but I still got the total mileage in, or close to it at least.

Count me as a solid maybe! :) I am at AK in the morning, but planning a super early dinner at EP so I may be in the area.

I have it on my calendar and will make every attempt to be there.

So, while most of you all are battling frigid temps... I'm looking at what may be record high temps for my 12 and 22 milers this weekend. Overnight lows are only forecast to be 68, highs in the mid-80s. :scared: The 12 should be okay: I won't be out there long enough to hit the worst of the heat. But 22? At my pace? I'd be out there in the worst heat/sun of the day. I'm concerned enough to be plotting routes that can easily end at 18 without leaving me miles from home, just in case.

Do you have someone that you can call to pick you up if you need it? My 24 miler is in opposite conditions, and my wife is going to be "on call" in case I have to wrap it up early. It has been a long time since I have actually bailed on a run like that, but I have when it was essential to my health.

Be safe out there guys. We are too close to race day to mess it up now.

Saturday it is supposed to be 74 here, but with thunderstorms all day. Sunday morning is 18 with a high of 30 later in the day. After reading all you guys cold temps that doesn't sound as bad but I run out on a lake and it will be windy with a ridiculous (to me!) wind chill. I am going to wait it out and see if the thunderstorms bypass us and get it in on Saturday between storms if I have to. I can handle the rain if it is warm, but not when it is that cold out.

ETA: Yes, that is like a 44 temperature difference in less than 24 hours. Hence the thunderstorms. :)

:thumbsup2 Yep! I'm also thinking I'll drive to my local park and leave a cooler with ice-cold Nuun in my car; I circle through that park multiple times for shade, restrooms and water refills, and having my car there would mean avoiding the shade-less 2 mile death march from there to home.

:scared1: That is a HUGE drop! Holy smokes.

I will certainly try to make it over! Looking forward to it!

Could you start any earlier, or even just plan to slow your pace as it warms up? Don't be shy about bailing if it's too hot to continue, but at this stage of training those temps could be a "blessing" since that's a very real possibility for the marathon in a few weeks; finding a way to get through it with either an earlier start (also approximating race conditions) or having some support late in the route could be great preparation physically and especially mentally.

Yeah our temps start out good Saturday but plummet throughout the day and Sunday is miserable. So now plan is to start running our 10 miler at 4 AM tomorrow and do the 20 on Saturday rather than running Saturday and Sunday.

Pencil in me and DH, Chris. We are planning to be at MK that day but might plan a mid-day break to meet up. My teenagers could stay at MK and enjoy the park without mom and dad hanging around. :)

Starting earlier doesn't help when the low is near 70, trust me! ;) I've been training through extreme heat/humidity here in FL since May, so I'm more than prepared for whatever may come in Jan - my priority now is to avoid heat stress. I've had heat stroke twice, which makes me extra sensitive to the heat, so I'll absolutely bail at the first sign of feeling overheated. I just find it humorous and ironic that the rest of the country's doing battle with the cold while down here we're desperate for an end to the heat!

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to make it. We will be in Epcot that day celebrating our 5K/10K runners finishing their slate of races and it's currently our only scheduled day in that park. Since we aren't staying on-site we were unable to make a FP+ for Frozen Ever After, so with a 5-year old niece I'm pretty sure we will be looking at a long stand-by line at some point. If I can sneak away I will, but it's probably unlikely.

Hopefully I'll meet some people before some of the races. I'll be fairly conspicuous in my Eeyore onesie before the 5K. I have social anxiety so I probably won't be the best conversationalist, so don't think it's anything personal if I'm a little aloof.
